Looking for good 90’s anime

Hi, I want to watch more 90’s anime. Maybe some more obscure stuff but still solid. I really like Evangelion and while I do like One Piece and Dragon Ball I think I want to watch more like slice of life stuff than shonen. I also heard Akira is really good but I’m still debating on whether or not to watch it.

Akira is a movie, so not much of a waste of time if you watched it and didn't enjoy. It definitely is worth giving a shot.

I'm an advocate for now and then, here and there. Its only 1 season and you will know by the 3rd episode if it is for you or not.

Angel densetsu is a short ova series, also a goodie if you want to give it a try.

The 90s Trigun is pretty good, but not slice of life. The first \~6 episodes are pretty funny & carefree, but then the series gets kind of dark with extradimensional alien slavery, and debate on the use of force or killing for survival purposes.

Battle Angel ([the 1993 original](https://youtu.be/8pzPhlNzfKY?si=K8YbU5MtDLwWq99i) and [2019 remake](https://youtu.be/w7pYhpJaJW8?si=e_ZEUCNQGiZTKM56))

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-04 01:07

Check out MF Ghost when you're done.

If you want another racing series from the 90s, an even better option is the Future GPX Cyber Formula series which covers professional sci-fi racing with several OVA follow up seasons.

PlagalResolution2026-01-04 01:19

Awesome thank you so much

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-04 01:25

No problem

MyMumDroppedMe2026-01-04 10:15

Master Keaton is very fun but it might be worth saying that each episode is a self-contained story which may be a deal breaker for you, OP.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-04 16:34

As someone who isn't hugely into episodic for binge series, Keaton's episodes are quite a bit stronger than are typical for that format.

Serial Experiments Lain feels like diving into digital consciousness. Haunting, beautiful, and it rewired my perspective on reality and identity completely.

xXSolBombXx2026-01-03 22:59

Kimagure Orange Road? More romance, but I find romances also tend to cater a bit to the slice of life genre.

Otherwise.... may I suggest Record of Lodoss war? Also not slice of life, old school fantasy. Very loosely based on Mangaka DnD campaigns.

Samurai Champloo and Akira

doomgoblin2026-01-04 03:28

A decade too late and one too early lol

MyMumDroppedMe2026-01-04 10:19

Heh I think we can recommend Akira as it was on OP's list

EconomyProcedure92026-01-03 23:21

Akira is actually from the '80s, but is a bonafide classic anime movie.

Kare Kano / His & Her Circumstances (1998)

Also directed by Hideaki Anno, same director as Evangelion; but make it into a high school enemies to lovers romcom anime. Don't be fooled by the cliched premise though, the manga source is excellent, and the anime is equally good.

zenithfury2026-01-04 03:45

Ghost in the Shell was 1995. You should watch it. And Macross Plus, and Patlabor. The magical girl shows were also surprisingly SoL at times, because quite some story is about how the characters go about their lives until a bad guy interrupts them. I quite liked Cardcaptor Sakura since CLAMP and all.

You'll probably like Maison Ikkoku, though that came out in the late '80s.

SoL romance drama, it's a masterpiece in my eyes.
