Welcome to the I My Me! Strawberry Eggs 25th anniversary rewatch!
^Just ^ignore ^the ^25th ^anniversary ^is ^in ^July…
Crossdressing and comedy. It has a long, storied history.
Nowadays, crossdressing in comedy is considered insensitive with accusations of it being transphobic and borderline homophobic. And while there is probably some truth to that, the reality is a lot of times it’s played with sincerity.
Some Like It Hot and Tootsie are two of the greatest comedies of all time. Mrs. Doubtfire is considered iconic and a defining part of Robin Williams legacy. All three movies play the crossdressing up for laughs but there’s quite sincerity about it to where the joke isn’t just “Lol, it’s a guy dressed as a woman”. And I think that sincerity applies to I My Me! Strawberry Eggs.
Strawberry Eggs, which is how I’ll be referring to it going forward, is very much a product of its time. It has that wacky slapstick type of humor common in anime at the time, like with shows such as Ranma and Love Hina. It also has a lot of heart that I think makes it a show worth revisiting.
This is easily the most obscure show I’ve ever hosted. I hope with this rewatch I can introduce people to this series that have never seen it before so they can become fans of it just like me. It’s been over two years since I last saw the show, so will my memory hold up or will it prove to be an outdated relic best forgotten to time? Let’s find out!
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
Well, I hope this episode is better than the last one. I imagine it will be.
Everyone not named Hibiki eating food.
Hibiki looking for pleated skirts.
He's wearing one now, and it's hard to move in.
I like that Lulu randomly has a puppet of the principal.
Kōji and Tofu listening in
They are excited at the prospect of buruma as a skirt alternative.
Hibiki waking up
First day on the job
Is it?
Hey, there's Fuko
And she calls him the bra man lol
She wants nothing to do with him.
Hibiki helping Fuko after she trips.
She says she bought food for the animals.
And so she nervously takes off
"I'm so pathetically misunderstood."
Same here, Hibiki. Same here.
At school now
The principal and vice principal in front of all the teachers.
This is like a cult almost
Lulu walking with an apple
He wonders what Kōji and Tofu are up to.
Hibiki in front of her students
Fuko is really excited that Hibiki is her homeroom teacher.
Talks of going to a retirement home.
Gotta send one member from each homeroom.
And Fuko offers to do so
This episode is all about how considerate and thoughtful Fuko is.
Lulu on the lookout
She's now flying with a parachute
You know, like you do
Hibiki showing the girls the buruma.
The girls are worried it might be too provocative.
Fuko doesn't seem too against the idea.
And of course, the male students were listening in on the conversation.
Buncha pervs
Speaking of perverts
Kōji brushing his teeth
And Lulu gives him what for
Same for Tofu
At least them getting beat up is entertaining.
Fuko doing a long jump
Unfortunately, she lands on top XD
Hibiki able to catch her
She blames the pleated skirt
Fuko says she'll wear them, and Hibiki says he'll wear them with her.
How thoughtful?
A nice crotch shot of Hibiki
Lulu with the undies save
She really is the best character
All the guys staring at Hibiki
Maybe Hibiki now understands where the principal is coming from...
Time for the long jump part deux
She did much better here
Principal in front of a bunch of burumas.
Hibiki pleading her case
She says the boys were just being boys.
Principal isn't buying it, however.
Hibiki with Fuko now
Fuko says she liked the buruma.
Even still, it was embarrassing.
Things are seemingly not coming up Hibiki.
Fuko returning stuff
And she bumps into Hibiki again.
Fuko really helps out probably way too much.
Hibiki notices something on his computer.
Her, sorry
Gotta select a different class rep for the volunteer committee.
Fuko a member of too many things.
Hibiki going to the faculty room now.
Fuko, stop saying you'll do everything. Please.
And Hibiki returns and Fuko is by herself.
Fuko...
"It's fine. I don't mind doing it."
FUKOOOOOOOOO
This poor girl is too kind for her own good.
Hibiki with Lulu
Lulu says human beings are selfish creatures.
Fuko not human confirmed?
Maybe she's a ghost :P
Hibiki in front of everyone again
She wants people to stop taking advantage of Fuko's generosity.
And now we get a flashback of Fuko practicing on the vaulting horse.
And she's wearing the buruma
At least her friends seem to care about her.
And so now the students are volunteering to help.
But Hibiki feels they're missing the point.
"Don't you care about your classmates? Don't they matter to you at all?"
I like this conflict. I like that Hibiki is looking out for Fuko and showing it's okay not to be a total pushover.
Hibiki telling Fuko to come with her.
That one boy classmate is really being focused on.
Hibiki says she'll leave wearing the Buruma up to her.
And next thing you know, the girls all want to wear them.
It seems like the girls have all come to an understanding.
Same for the guys
And look at that, Fuko cleared the vaulting horse.
Everyone is having fun
"Physical freedom releases the kind as well as the body."
And so the principal and vice principal, albeit reluctantly, agrees to allow Buruma to be the new gym clothes.
Lulu mad because she was planning on selling buruma herself.
Bought them by the bulk, with no way of returning them.
So, now she's gonna wear them herself.
See what you did, Kōji and Tofu? Bunch of dumbasses.
Overall, this was a very well done episode. It was about gym outfits, but it was more about Hibiki and Fuko's relationship and how Hibiki felt people were taking advantage of Fuko's generosity. Hibiki making the students realize the error of their ways was done believably in a way that made sense. It also serves to continue the trend of Hibiki making an impact on the school that serves to make Hibiki a thorn in the principal's side.
And hey, Kōji and Tofu's roles in the episode were kept to a minimum, with Lulu basically torturing them. That was good.
This was my favorite episode of the series so far. A nice bounce back from the last one that showed more of the heart of the show. I thought it did a really good job of fleshing out Fuko's character and having her conflict be also her biggest strength, that being the level of compassion she shows for others. There was a prefect blend of heart, humility, and comedy.
Never heard of Buruma before
> What are your thoughts on Hibiki wearing the Buruma with Fuko so she feels comfortable wearing it?
Hibiki is getting very involved
> What are your thoughts on it being revealed that Fuko's classmates take advantage of her kindness by getting her to do everything?
Fuko...
> What are your thoughts on Hibiki being mad because even though Fuko's classmates agreed to help Fuko out, it's like they haven't learned what exactly they did wrong?
I really like that. It's like they're only guilty because they got caught.
> What are your thoughts on one of the lessons of this episode which is physical freedom releases the mind as well as the body?
Good lesson
How?!
Fun fact, Bulma from Dragon Ball is named after those! (Most Dragon Ball characters are named after something, usually food or clothing)
I've heard of bloomers, but I didn't know there were like specific types.
>Fun fact, Bulma from Dragon Ball is named after those! (Most Dragon Ball characters are named after something, usually food or clothing)
I found out about that as I was trying to look up the Wikipedia article for Buruma.
If you're curious, her last name is Briefs. Her son is Trunks, and her daughter is Bulla (Bra).
> This is like a cult almost
My thoughts exactly. Is everyone else too afraid to question her or are they all crazy as well?
>Bought them by the bulk, with no way of returning them.
>So, now she's gonna wear them herself.

Yes
>[](#ptsd)
We need bleach for our eyes
>Overall felt like a very different episode from the previous 2, good mix of comedy and drama with character focus, I quite enjoyed it!
I wonder if this will be a trend going forward where it's like a mix between comedy and drama.
That's me speculating, by the way, not a spoiler :P
>
>That's me speculating, by the way, not a spoiler :P
Already asked that question myself on another comment, I'll take everything you say as either a spoiler or you gaslighting me!
Let me ask you something. What are your thoughts on Hibiki talking about the freedom of wearing Buruma when he doesn't have the freedom of being a male teacher?
>Thoughts on Buruma being talked as a skirt alternative?
Absolutely fucking not. That's borderline underwear and shouldn't be used at school.
>What are your thoughts on Hibiki wearing the Buruma with Fuko so she feels comfortable wearing it?
I really wish he hadn't.
>What are your thoughts on it being revealed that Fuko's classmates take advantage of her kindness by getting her to do everything?
That was sad. She wasn't straight up being bullied, but I still felt really sorry for her. Good on Hibiki for taking care of it!
>What are your thoughts on Hibiki being mad because even though Fuko's classmates agreed to help Fuko out, it's like they haven't learned what exactly they did wrong?
Kids will be kids, as long as they agreed to help out in the end, I don't think it really matters why, but on him for helping Fuko out!
>What are your thoughts on one of the lessons of this episode which is physical freedom releases the mind as well as the body?
Too philosophical for me.
On to the episode!
Should Hibiki be mentioning anything school related in front of the perverts? That's gonna bite him in the ass...
Oh boy, Fuko remembers the bra thing, I sort of expected it was one of those gags that would later be ignored lol.
Man, the principal is running that school like a full on cult. How is everyone playing along with her?!
The vaulting horse thing was one of the few things I didn't mind too much in PE.
I kind of agree with the girls. Bloomers are way too provocative, but you see them in a lot of school anime... Are they actually worn in real schools?!
Oh my God, Hibiki wearing those is so wrong!
Every time Fuko runs into Hibiki I wonder if his breasts will finally fall off lol.
I'm proud of Hibiki for helping out Fuko.
Jesus, why won't they just wear regular shorts?! I actually looked it up, apparently bloomers were common between the 1960s and 1980s, but not anymore. Good, because it's very fucking weird that kids would wear those.
And in the end, Fuko succeeded jumping over the horse! I'm proud of her!
It seems Hibiki is actually being a good teacher, and not making it weird with the girls, not what I expected to be honest.
Oh God, I don't want to imagine granny wearing those bloomers :|
Bit of a different episode, focused more on drama than comedy, still a good episode though!
I believe Buruma are outlawed in Japanese schools.
>I really wish he hadn't.
Eh, he had good intentions
>That was sad. She wasn't straight up being bullied, but I still felt really sorry for her. Good on Hibiki for taking care of it!
He continues to stick up for those who are weak. Mostly Fuko, but still.
>Kids will be kids, as long as they agreed to help out in the end, I don't think it really matters why, but on him for helping Fuko out!
He did good teaching the kids a valuable lesson.
>Too philosophical for me.
It sounds smart, though
>On to the episode!
[](#woo)
>Should Hibiki be mentioning anything school related in front of the perverts? That's gonna bite him in the ass...
Yeah, more than likely
>Oh boy, Fuko remembers the bra thing, I sort of expected it was one of those gags that would later be ignored lol.
It doesn't seem like it
>Man, the principal is running that school like a full on cult. How is everyone playing along with her?!
In fairness, the boys in this school seem uh...
>The vaulting horse thing was one of the few things I didn't mind too much in PE.
I don't think I ever had to do that
>I kind of agree with the girls. Bloomers are way too provocative, but you see them in a lot of school anime... Are they actually worn in real schools?!
Well, I think the idea is they'll only wear it for gym class. Unless I'm mistaken or something.
>Oh my God, Hibiki wearing those is so wrong!
He's got nice legs
>Every time Fuko runs into Hibiki I wonder if his breasts will finally fall off lol.
Imagine if that was how his secret got out lol
>I'm proud of Hibiki for helping out Fuko.
He's her number 1 ally
>Jesus, why won't they just wear regular shorts?! I actually looked it up, apparently bloomers were common between the 1960s and 1980s, but not anymore. Good, because it's very fucking weird that kids would wear those.
I think it's interesting it's not really played for fanservice here.
>And in the end, Fuko succeeded jumping over the horse! I'm proud of her!
So far, Hibiki and Fuko’s relationship reminds me of Ryuuji and Taiga's from Toradora. Hibiki is like this manic pixie dream girl and he is constantly making Fuko’s life easier.
>It seems Hibiki is actually being a good teacher, and not making it weird with the girls, not what I expected to be honest.
It feels almost like Hibiki is like the alien creature from Assassination Classroom. His mere presence is a net positive.
>Oh God, I don't want to imagine granny wearing those bloomers :|
I laughed lol
>Bit of a different episode, focused more on drama than comedy, still a good episode though!
I really liked it. I thought this was really the first episode that showcased more of the dynamic between the students, in particular how they mostly think for themselves.
As they should!
>Eh, he had good intentions
I didn't need to see his cheeks though!
>He continues to stick up for those who are weak. Mostly Fuko, but still.
Yeah, I wonder if it'll always be her.
>It sounds smart, though
I don't do smart!
>In fairness, the boys in this school seem uh...
That's true. Bunch of degenerates... Is Hibiki going to be the only decent guy in the show?!
>I don't think I ever had to do that
Really? What do they have you do in PE over there?
>Well, I think the idea is they'll only wear it for gym class. Unless I'm mistaken or something.
Doesn't make it much better!
>He's got nice legs
That somehow makes it worse...
>Imagine if that was how his secret got out lol
It's totally gonna be, isn't it? Please don't answer!
>I think it's interesting it's not really played for fanservice here.
They already showed their panties for that lmao
>So far, Hibiki and Fuko’s relationship reminds me of Ryuuji and Taiga's from Toradora. Hibiki is like this manic pixie dream girl and he is constantly making Fuko’s life easier.
My memory of Toradora is too hazy to make a connection...
>It feels almost like Hibiki is like the alien creature from Assassination Classroom. His mere presence is a net positive.
Is that also a spoiler? Are they gonna kill him?!
>I really liked it. I thought this was really the first episode that showcased more of the dynamic between the students, in particular how they mostly think for themselves.
I wonder how the other episodes will follow, closer to this one or the previous 2?
They are pretty short
>I didn't need to see his cheeks though!
Better looking than Lulu's, at least
>Yeah, I wonder if it'll always be her.
If it is, is it like any wonder she's smitten by him?
>I don't do smart!
Fair enough
>That's true. Bunch of degenerates... Is Hibiki going to be the only decent guy in the show?!
I guess we'll see.
The episode did focus its camera on one of the guys for a while. I imagine he will end up being important.
>Really? What do they have you do in PE over there?
Mostly dodgeball and running around. I don't even think we ever even climbed a rope.
>Doesn't make it much better!
It would be better if it was indoors I feel like.
>That somehow makes it worse...
Eh, does it? Lol
>It's totally gonna be, isn't it? Please don't answer!
Hmm
>They already showed their panties for that lmao
I guess Buruma is by design panties, so it'd be like a hat on top of a hat.
>My memory of Toradora is too hazy to make a connection...
Of course, Fuko seems way nicer than Taiga does, so there's that.
>Is that also a spoiler? Are they gonna kill him?!
Is that a spoiler for Assassination Classroom I'm unaware of?
>I wonder how the other episodes will follow, closer to this one or the previous 2?
The last one was really goofy while this one was like Hibiki sticking it to the principal. I'm sure this won't be the last time he makes the principal’s life difficult.
They better not show it next episode...
>If it is, is it like any wonder she's smitten by him?
Will he be smitten though?
>The episode did focus its camera on one of the guys for a while. I imagine he will end up being important.
I'm guessing he'll be interested in Fuko.
>Mostly dodgeball and running around. I don't even think we ever even climbed a rope.
Sounds horrible. I don't think I've ever climbed a rope either though. We mostly did ball sports like football (the one with the actual feet, not your weird hand egg sport), handball, volleyball, basketball... And running around of course. And a bit of gymnastics, but that was just a short while.
>Eh, does it? Lol
Yes, very much so. I don't like to question my sexuality.
>I guess Buruma is by design panties, so it'd be like a hat on top of a hat.
Hmm... Reminds me of an old Anime.
>Of course, Fuko seems way nicer than Taiga does, so there's that.
That much I remember lol.
>Is that a spoiler for Assassination Classroom I'm unaware of?
That's the premise of Assassination Classroom, they're supposed to kill the teacher. Whether or not they succeed is another story :P
>The last one was really goofy while this one was like Hibiki sticking it to the principal. I'm sure this won't be the last time he makes the principal’s life difficult.
Good, she needs to be taken down a notch.
I somehow doubt that
>Will he be smitten though?
So far, he has not
>I'm guessing he'll be interested in Fuko.
Hibiki has competition :P
>Sounds horrible. I don't think I've ever climbed a rope either though. We mostly did ball sports like football (the one with the actual feet, not your weird hand egg sport), handball, volleyball, basketball... And running around of course. And a bit of gymnastics, but that was just a short while.
It was basically do whatever you want for a period.
>Yes, very much so. I don't like to question my sexuality.
I don't need anime to help me with that lol
>Hmm... Reminds me of an old Anime.
How so?
>That much I remember lol.
If you combined Fuko and Fujio, you'd get Taiga.
>That's the premise of Assassination Classroom, they're supposed to kill the teacher. Whether or not they succeed is another story :P
They did not, it seems
>Good, she needs to be taken down a notch.
At the very least mellow out a little
I think it would've been a first for me, seeing a granny in "panties", and I've seen a lot of Anime...
>Hibiki has competition :P
I thought he wasn't smitten yet!
>It was basically do whatever you want for a period.
So I take it you did nothing? I actually had to do things, but I "forgot" my gym clothes most of the time, so I sat with a girl that couldn't do PE for health reasons lol.
>I don't need anime to help me with that lol
Are we about to have a very personal conversation?
>How so?
Was a joke referencing A-channel from your previous post lol
>They did not, it seems
A mystery is what it is! Guess you'll have to watch it too. It's a fun one, so definitely worth it.
>At the very least mellow out a little
I have a feeling she will accept Hibiki as a man in the end.
I believe I saw it in a gag in A Certain Magical Index.
>I thought he wasn't smitten yet!
He is not smitten
>So I take it you did nothing? I actually had to do things, but I "forgot" my gym clothes most of the time, so I sat with a girl that couldn't do PE for health reasons lol.
It was mostly me and someone else normally talking the shit.
>Are we about to have a very personal conversation?
If you want
>Was a joke referencing A-channel from your previous post lol
Fair enough lol
>A mystery is what it is! Guess you'll have to watch it too. It's a fun one, so definitely worth it.
I have heard it's a great high school anime. I recently rewatched Shakugan no Shana and I had forgotten how impactful they used the high school setting.
>I have a feeling she will accept Hibiki as a man in the end.
I guess we'll see
I actually never finished that... I didn't really drop it, but I went on vacation for 2 weeks while watching it and simply never picked it back up. Been like 6 years now...
>It was mostly me and someone else normally talking the shit.
Similar experience then, heh.
>If you want
I'm all ears.
>I have heard it's a great high school anime. I recently rewatched Shakugan no Shana and I had forgotten how impactful they used the high school setting.
This one is actually set mostly in school though, from what I remember.
A Certain Scientific Railgun is better
>Similar experience then, heh.
It's no wonder we are failures :P
>I'm all ears.
**Pictures you tipped over because you have massive ears**
>This one is actually set mostly in school though, from what I remember.
Yeah, that's what I heard
Thoughts on Fuko calling guy Hibiki Bra Man?
What are your thoughts on Fuko wanting nothing to do with guy Hibiki?
Thoughts on Fuko feeding the animals?
Thoughts on Hibiki being Fuko's homeroom teacher?
Thoughts on Fuko volunteering to help at a retirement home?
Thoughts on Lulu flying with a parachute?
Thoughts on us getting to see some of the male students?
Thoughts on Lulu constantly thwarting Kōji and Tofu trying to get a look at the Buruma?
What are your thoughts on all the classmates deciding to rally around Fuko and show their support?
What are your thoughts on the students being allowed to wear Buruma?
Thoughts on Lulu mad Buruma was allowed because she was planning on selling them as a side hustle?
Thoughts on the episode ending with Lulu wearing Buruma?
>Thoughts on Lulu having a puppet of the principal?
What doesn't she have?
>What are your thoughts on Fuko wanting nothing to do with guy Hibiki?
It's gonna haunt her in a few episodes lol.
>Thoughts on Fuko feeding the animals?
Probably one of the jobs no one else wanted to take on :( she's a good girl!
>Thoughts on Hibiki being Fuko's homeroom teacher?
Should've seen it coming, they couldn't possibly just have PE classes the entire time.
>Thoughts on Fuko volunteering to help at a retirement home?
She's seriously a good girl!
>Thoughts on Lulu flying with a parachute?
Nothing about that woman surprises me anymore. Except that she wears bloomers...
>Thoughts on us getting to see some of the male students?
We'd already seen them before, but yeah wasn't a good look.
>Thoughts on Lulu constantly thwarting Kōji and Tofu trying to get a look at the Buruma?
I'm glad it happened, a second episode in a row about the peeping toms wouldn't have been great
>What are your thoughts on all the classmates deciding to rally around Fuko and show their support?
I mean... They were kinda coerced into it.
>Thoughts on Lulu mad Buruma was allowed because she was planning on selling them as a side hustle?
Hilarious lol. How many side gigs does she run?
>Thoughts on the episode ending with Lulu wearing Buruma?
Still traumatized.
Fair enough
>What doesn't she have?
Money from the people living with her
>It's gonna haunt her in a few episodes lol.
Probably so
>Probably one of the jobs no one else wanted to take on :( she's a good girl!
That she is. She's pure as snow.
>Should've seen it coming, they couldn't possibly just have PE classes the entire time.
For real
>She's seriously a good girl!
I really like her
>Nothing about that woman surprises me anymore. Except that she wears bloomers...
Gotta make use of it somehow
>We'd already seen them before, but yeah wasn't a good look.
Nah, not at all
>I'm glad it happened, a second episode in a row about the peeping toms wouldn't have been great
This was a good use of them I feel like
>I mean... They were kinda coerced into it.
At least they like felt guilty about how they treated Fuko.
>Hilarious lol. How many side gigs does she run?
Yes
>Still traumatized.
I think she could take Vegeta on in a fight lol
Does she even care? I'm sure she has fun torturing them.
>This was a good use of them I feel like
Yeah, as long as it's kept in short doses it's all good.
>I think she could take Vegeta on in a fight lol
Well, I've never seen Vegeta win a fight against a woman, so... Probably.
She definitely enjoys torturing the two perverts. And at least Hibiki is putting in an effort.
>Yeah, as long as it's kept in short doses it's all good.
Yeah, this was what? Only 2 minutes?
>Well, I've never seen Vegeta win a fight against a woman, so... Probably.
Vegeta never fought Bulma?
Probably.
>Vegeta never fought Bulma?
Not physically. He fought another woman and got his ass handed to him though.
It was very brief [](#urbansmile)
>Not physically. He fought another woman and got his ass handed to him though.
Of course he did lol
I'm a little busy today so I may not be able to respond much tonight.
So today’s episode is about bloomers or as the dub calls them, buruma. This is how it’s pronounced in Japanese but it’s weird hearing the English dub pronounce it like that.
Bloomers are an old timey style of women’s underwear but it’s also the name for gym shorts that used to be a standard part of girls gym uniforms in Japan.
It’s also where Bulma from Dragon Ball gets her name.
Fun fact by the way, by the time this anime came out bloomers were already falling out of favor in Japanese schools. Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s schools ended up dropping bloomers for more standard gym shorts.
But the trope of bloomers as the standard anime girls gym uniform persisted into the 2000s and even into the early 2010s, likely because most of the people working on anime and manga at the time had just grown up with that.
But in newer anime you’re not likely to see that as part of a gym uniform anymore.
So ironically despite this episode being about Hibiki trying to get the headmistress to modernise the gym uniforms he himself is already outdated.
It also makes the whole premise of the episode a bit silly. It treats it like the only options are bloomers or long skirts, while the idea of just using gym shorts never comes up.
Man, I do not like these two characters who live with Hibiki. I’m usually annoyed by other pervert characters in anime, but at least someone like Master Roshi is over the top. These guys seem way too much like actual weird perverts. Especially the old guy.
At least Lulu tracks them down to beat them up in an over the top way.
Once again, I am on the side of these girls not wanting to wear those bloomers. Especially since the male characters in this show are kinda proving them right about why they don’t want to wear them.
Where did Hibiki get so many bloomers on short notice anyway? Clearly the headmistress wouldn’t approve of that. Did Lulu just keep a collection or something?
I know I mentioned it earlier but I am still not used to the dub using the Japanese pronunciation of bloomers. Like, this is probably the first ever official dub to feel like an early 2000s fansub.
(I swear if they say “keikaku” instead of plan in this dub I’m gonna lose it)
Okay I do like Hibiki as a protagonist, but he really shouldn’t dismiss the way the boys are acting like that. Not a very responsible thing for a teacher to do. Like the girls have a very valid reason to not be comfortable with the boys acting this way.
Alright, I have been kinda critical of this episode, but I do like the latter part of this episode focusing on Hibiki realizing other students are taking advantage of Fuko’s good nature and generosity.
Hibiki really can be a good teacher when it counts.
I guess it tries to tie everything together at the end. But I don’t quite get the connection between bloomers and everyone relying on Fuko too much.
**Thoughts on Buruma being talked as a skirt alternative?**
As I said, this could have just been easily resolved with normal gym shorts
**What are your thoughts on Hibiki wearing the Buruma with Fuko so she feels comfortable wearing it?**
Well that's nice of Hibiki to do
**What are your thoughts on it being revealed that Fuko's classmates take advantage of her kindness by getting her to do everything?**
I liked that half of the episode, it was interesting
**What are your thoughts on Hibiki being mad because even though Fuko's classmates agreed to help Fuko out, it's like they haven't learned what exactly they did wrong?**
Well here's hoping they can figure it out eventually
**What are your thoughts on one of the lessons of this episode which is physical freedom releases the mind as well as the body?**
Not sure if the message quite works since I'm not sure if any of the girls were totally able to get over their discomfort with bloomers
But Lulu doesn't have those :P
>Well that's nice of Hibiki to do
I thought so
>I liked that half of the episode, it was interesting
Hopefully it leads to Fuko being treated better.
>Well here's hoping they can figure it out eventually
That would be nice
>Not sure if the message quite works since I'm not sure if any of the girls were totally able to get over their discomfort with bloomers
My impression was they got over it because Hibiki knows best. Whether that's good or not I don't know.
While I do like Hibiki, I do wish the show took the girls discomfort a bit more seriously
Good visual gag
> Thoughts on Fuko calling guy Hibiki Bra Man?
The thing about Fuko not liking the male Hibiki is kinda funny
> What are your thoughts on Fuko wanting nothing to do with guy Hibiki?
Good use of dramatic irony
> Thoughts on Fuko feeding the animals?
Cute.
> Thoughts on Hibiki being Fuko's homeroom teacher?
Makes sense
> Thoughts on Fuko volunteering to help at a retirement home?
She's very sweet
> Thoughts on Lulu flying with a parachute?
Lulu is very funny
> Thoughts on us getting to see some of the male students?
I can't remember any of them
> Thoughts on Lulu constantly thwarting Kōji and Tofu trying to get a look at the Buruma?
I don't like those two so I'm glad misfortune befalls them
> What are your thoughts on all the classmates deciding to rally around Fuko and show their support?
That's sweet
> What are your thoughts on the students being allowed to wear Buruma?
Neutral thoughts. I guess I don't like how the issue of the boys being weird about them is not resolved
> Thoughts on Lulu mad Buruma was allowed because she was planning on selling them as a side hustle?
> Thoughts on the episode ending with Lulu wearing Buruma?
Lulu is probably still my favorite character
I liked it
>The thing about Fuko not liking the male Hibiki is kinda funny
It's great comedic irony
>Good use of dramatic irony
And comedic
>Cute.
Very much so
>Makes sense
It checks out
>She's very sweet
Indeed
>Lulu is very funny
Very much so
>I can't remember any of them
Fair enough
>I don't like those two so I'm glad misfortune befalls them
Me too
>That's sweet
Took them long enough
>Neutral thoughts. I guess I don't like how the issue of the boys being weird about them is not resolved
But you can argue at least for them that teenage boys will be teenage boys.
>Lulu is probably still my favorite character
She's a bundle of great moments
I guess, but at the same time I do feel like it’s important for teenage boys to know not to treat girls like sex objects.
But I'm probably taking this way too seriously.
Maybe I'm too naive and the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
I'm watching the sub, so I didn't know that... Why the hell would they do that?!
>Bloomers are an old timey style of women’s underwear but it’s also the name for gym shorts that used to be a standard part of girls gym uniforms in Japan.
>Fun fact by the way, by the time this anime came out bloomers were already falling out of favor in Japanese schools. Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s schools ended up dropping bloomers for more standard gym shorts.
I've seen them in so many anime, I actually thought they might've still been in use today, glad I was wrong!
> It’s also where Bulma from Dragon Ball gets her name.
Ah, another Dragon Ball enjoyer!
>But in newer anime you’re not likely to see that as part of a gym uniform anymore.
Really? I feel like I've seen them a lot, maybe I'm just remembering older anime...
Yeah I have no idea, the dub is super weird. It's like those '90s/2000s fansubs that keep random bits of Japanese terminology untranslated, except as an official dub.
>Really? I feel like I've seen them a lot, maybe I'm just remembering older anime...
I did actually decide to look at a few gym scenes from newer anime like Kaguya-sama or Tomo-chan Is a Girl and yeah, they don't really have characters wear bloomers anymore. Usually it's either gym shorts or tracksuits.
Funny enough, the subs are the same. They also use buruka and kyoshi.
>I did actually decide to look at a few gym scenes from newer anime like Kaguya-sama or Tomo-chan Is a Girl and yeah, they don't really have characters wear bloomers anymore. Usually it's either gym shorts or tracksuits.
To be fair, I wouldn't expect either of those to pull out the bloomers. Maybe some more riské anime, but I honestly can't think about any off the top of my head...
Happy cake day, by the way
It kinda reminds me of an anime like Samurai Pizza Cats where the dub is like going very loose and fast.
>To be fair, I wouldn't expect either of those to pull out the bloomers. Maybe some more riské anime, but I honestly can't think about any off the top of my head...

First time hearing about either of those shows!
I feel like something like that wouldn't fly nowadays.
>I did actually decide to look at a few gym scenes from newer anime like Kaguya-sama or Tomo-chan Is a Girl and yeah, they don't really have characters wear bloomers anymore. Usually it's either gym shorts or tracksuits.
In Toradora, did they even have gym clothing during the ball scene in episode 2? I don't think so.
See, those outfits make way more sense in my opinion.
I think maybe they heard the extra syllable and was like "Oh, it must be a type of bloomer".
>I've seen them in so many anime, I actually thought they might've still been in use today, glad I was wrong!
They don't look bad, just feels a bit antiquated. Which is ironic because the other outfit iw supposed to be the antiquated ones.
>Ah, another Dragon Ball enjoyer!
Vegeta best tsundere
>Really? I feel like I've seen them a lot, maybe I'm just remembering older anime...
I believe they were in a recent episode of The Eminence In Shadow.
Didn't they also keep the word Kyoshi untranslated though?
>They don't look bad, just feels a bit antiquated. Which is ironic because the other outfit iw supposed to be the antiquated ones.
It's not about looking bad, it's just weird to put them on young girls! I mean, it's an anime so I don't actually mind it at all, was just thinking how weird it would be in real life.
>Vegeta best tsundere
Actually true.
>I believe they were in a recent episode of The Eminence In Shadow.
Wouldn't surprise me lol
Look, it's a dub from the early 2000s. Anything went back then :P
>It's not about looking bad, it's just weird to put them on young girls! I mean, it's an anime so I don't actually mind it at all, was just thinking how weird it would be in real life.
I think the only weird part for me was Kōji and Tofu trying to get a look at them.
>Actually true.
I love how much he loves his bloomers. Er, Bulma, sorry.
>Wouldn't surprise me lol
Yeah, it's a comedy, so...
Haven't watched a dub in like 20 years so I wouldn't know if they're any better now!
>I think the only weird part for me was Kōji and Tofu trying to get a look at them.
Perverts gonna perve.
>I love how much he loves his bloomers. Er, Bulma, sorry.
How do you even know that?!
>Yeah, it's a comedy, so...
Straight up parody. And it's hilarious!
I watched the dub of Love Hina last year and they randomly gave one of the girls like a Southern accent.
>Perverts gonna perve.
I suppose, unfortunately
>How do you even know that?!
I saw the collection personally?
>Straight up parody. And it's hilarious!
Very much so. At least from what I've heard.
Was it the Indian girl?
>I saw the collection personally?
What collection?
>Very much so. At least from what I've heard.
You've not watched it?! I really recommend it. It's so hilariously bad, in the best way possible!
No, the busty girl with blonde hair
>What collection?
Vegeta's bloomer collection
>You've not watched it?! I really recommend it. It's so hilariously bad, in the best way possible!
There's people who think it's a legitimately good series. Like Konosuba if it was a little bit darker.
I thought you were talking about his wife Bulma lmao
>There's people who think it's a legitimately good series. Like Konosuba if it was a little bit darker.
It is legitimately good, but it's extremely cringe, in a hilarious way. I really liked it!
Fair enough. Take all the time you need.
>So today’s episode is about bloomers or as the dub calls them, buruma. This is how it’s pronounced in Japanese but it’s weird hearing the English dub pronounce it like that.
I don't know. It sounded natural to me.
>Bloomers are an old timey style of women’s underwear but it’s also the name for gym shorts that used to be a standard part of girls gym uniforms in Japan.
Makes sense, I suppose
>It’s also where Bulma from Dragon Ball gets her name.
Neat
>Fun fact by the way, by the time this anime came out bloomers were already falling out of favor in Japanese schools. Throughout the 90s and into the 2000s schools ended up dropping bloomers for more standard gym shorts.
I can see why they did so. They look rather silly.
>But the trope of bloomers as the standard anime girls gym uniform persisted into the 2000s and even into the early 2010s, likely because most of the people working on anime and manga at the time had just grown up with that.
It's nostalgia in a way
>But in newer anime you’re not likely to see that as part of a gym uniform anymore.
I feel like I saw red shorts in like the 2010s.
>So ironically despite this episode being about Hibiki trying to get the headmistress to modernise the gym uniforms he himself is already outdated.
It's like upgrading to a new gaming console when the newest model is already out. Like upgrading to a PS3 in 2013.
>It also makes the whole premise of the episode a bit silly. It treats it like the only options are bloomers or long skirts, while the idea of just using gym shorts never comes up.
Maybe they can't afford them? Or maybe Hibiki feels gym shorts are like a bridge too far for the principal.
>Man, I do not like these two characters who live with Hibiki. I’m usually annoyed by other pervert characters in anime, but at least someone like Master Roshi is over the top. These guys seem way too much like actual weird perverts. Especially the old guy.
I will say this: I do like that their gag is they get beat up by people. I like seeing them suffer lol
>At least Lulu tracks them down to beat them up in an over the top way.
That is fun
>Once again, I am on the side of these girls not wanting to wear those bloomers. Especially since the male characters in this show are kinda proving them right about why they don’t want to wear them.
It's weird because the male characters in this show kinda like prove principal right in her dislike for men. I hope we learn more of the male characters and they get characterization of their own.
>Where did Hibiki get so many bloomers on short notice anyway? Clearly the headmistress wouldn’t approve of that. Did Lulu just keep a collection or something?
It seems like she bought them in bulk or something.
>I know I mentioned it earlier but I am still not used to the dub using the Japanese pronunciation of bloomers. Like, this is probably the first ever official dub to feel like an early 2000s fansub.
Is it the Japanese pronunciation or is Buruma just a type of bloomers? I'm watching the dub as well and that's what I thought.
>(I swear if they say “keikaku” instead of plan in this dub I’m gonna lose it)
Sadly, this was before Death Note. But can you imagine?
>Okay I do like Hibiki as a protagonist, but he really shouldn’t dismiss the way the boys are acting like that. Not a very responsible thing for a teacher to do. Like the girls have a very valid reason to not be comfortable with the boys acting this way.
I think the students in this school are all acting kinda close-minded. Like, they are could stand to learn something.
>Alright, I have been kinda critical of this episode, but I do like the latter part of this episode focusing on Hibiki realizing other students are taking advantage of Fuko’s good nature and generosity.
That was the part I liked as well. I thought it was some good characterization for Fuko.
>Hibiki really can be a good teacher when it counts.
Indeed
>I guess it tries to tie everything together at the end. But I don’t quite get the connection between bloomers and everyone relying on Fuko too much.
I think my take on it is when you rely on something too much, it avoids the opportunity for growth and getting out of your comfort zone.
I actually really like the episode. The bloomers stuff is silly, but I thought it led to something really interesting with Fuko's generosity being taken advantage of. And we continue the trend of Hibiki being there for Fuko when no one else is including herself.
I'm just used to most dubs using the English pronunciation of loanwords
>Neat
All the members of Bulma's family have names that come from underwear
>I can see why they did so. They look rather silly.
And uncomfortable to wear
>I feel like I saw red shorts in like the 2010s.
Bloomers are that very specific kind of super short shorts. They still remained fairly common into the 2010s
> Maybe they can't afford them? Or maybe Hibiki feels gym shorts are like a bridge too far for the principal.
The meta reason is that the people who made the anime were just familiar with bloomers as the standard girls gym uniform
>It's weird because the male characters in this show kinda like prove principal right in her dislike for men. I hope we learn more of the male characters and they get characterization of their own.
Yeah the themes of this show are pretty muddled
> Is it the Japanese pronunciation or is Buruma just a type of bloomers? I'm watching the dub as well and that's what I thought.
It's a loanword, it's just bloomers pronounced with Japanese phonetics
>I actually really like the episode. The bloomers stuff is silly, but I thought it led to something really interesting with Fuko's generosity being taken advantage of. And we continue the trend of Hibiki being there for Fuko when no one else is including herself.
Yeah the second part of the episode about Fuko is some really good stuff
Yeah, it is pretty unusual
>All the members of Bulma's family have names that come from underwear
So I've heard
>And uncomfortable to wear
That too
>Bloomers are that very specific kind of super short shorts. They still remained fairly common into the 2010s
There's one scene that sticks out to me of a girl in red bloomers riding a bicycle.
>The meta reason is that the people who made the anime were just familiar with bloomers as the standard girls gym uniform
Yeah, true enough
>Yeah the themes of this show are pretty muddled
The real highlights have been the characters of Hibiki, Fuko, and Lulu.
>It's a loanword, it's just bloomers pronounced with Japanese phonetics
Ah, okay. That makes sense I guess.
>Yeah the second part of the episode about Fuko is some really good stuff
And I like that the lesson was less don't take advantage of people and more show some accountability when you do take advantage of someone.
Why are you listening with them stethoscopes now 😭
I’m looking at those two perverts like 😑 I’m surprised no one suggested just…wearing boy’s shorts instead of running around in a heavy skirt.
What type of school chant is that…
Tuck, girl! Tuck!
Is Baachan 🏳️🌈?
Hibiki, your ass and those thighs though 👀 He has such a great figure.
It does suck when the class doesn’t participate in some events.
Buruma Power! It would not surprise me if there’s some obscure manga out there about buruma giving people magical powers.
Aw, that’s nice.
Score for Hibiki!

**Additional Thoughts**
I hope the perv squad simmers the fuck down 😭
I’m surprised buruma was the solutions instead of wearing male shorts. But I assume this was either made when buruma were in fashion or it’s…because of the fetish.
Really sucks Fuko is fine with this treatment. Poor kid. Granted, while her classmates should help her, she needs to learn the lesson of having boundaries. And that’s difficult to navigate if you’re a people-pleaser or conflict-avoidant.
Baachan feels like an old queer granny who would have every gender-affirming item under the sun and gives you some stuff no problem when you’re struggling and then walk away. She has NYC attitude. I like that.
***
**QotD**
1. Why? Why not just wear boy shorts?
2. How does Baachan know about all this, is what I was wondering.
3. It was sad to see how normalized it is and previous teachers did nothing.
4. I’d be mad too. I don’t want someone to do something to just shut up the conversation. Do it because you genuinely and authentically want to.
5. What an ironic message given Hibiki does not have physical freedom while working.
And then I owe you answers to your questions yesterday, hold on.
Why not?
>I’m looking at those two perverts like 😑 I’m surprised no one suggested just…wearing boy’s shorts instead of running around in a heavy skirt.

Tuck and roll!

Fun fact: This anime is actually written by a woman. The one who wrote the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure anime, no less!
>Really sucks Fuko is fine with this treatment. Poor kid. Granted, while her classmates should help her, she needs to learn the lesson of having boundaries. And that’s difficult to navigate if you’re a people-pleaser or conflict-avoidant.

I would say this is the writer's fetish but a woman wrote thie anime [](#ptsd)
The scene begins with Hibiki requesting a girls' school uniform. He wanted to experience "[jumping over vaulting box](https://imgur.com/HMJGpze)" in a traditional uniform, which really brought back childhood memories. In elementary and middle school, my classmates and I often played this during breaks; we called it "[~~跳马~~跳山羊](https://imgur.com/XxGvxYf)." First, we'd play rock-paper-scissors, and the loser would become the "~~horse~~goat" (support point).
To begin with, there's the issue of the uniform. I have to say, this kind of girls' uniform is quite pretty, but it's not very suitable for sports. Ironically, my area also has a uniform problem, but it's completely different. Here, everyone wears the same rather "baggy" sportswear as their school uniform, prioritizing practicality above all else, with no aesthetic appeal whatsoever. When he tried to peopose ~~new sports shorts~~ Buluma during breaks, he encountered resistance from two sides. First, the girls demanded that Hibiki demonstrate first—if Ruru hadn't brought him some tight underwear, things would’ve been even worse. Then the boys started to jeer. Hibiki could temporarily control these issues, but when the principal saw the chaos in his classroom, she immediately intervened and demanded that things be restored to normal. So he had no choice but to comply. I imagine the reality in Japan is even harsher. It's a hierarchical society, and perhaps there are very few teachers like Hibiki who would step forward to promote their new ideas. They wouldn't dare disobey their superiors, even if it benefits the students. But seeing this scene of a teacher caring for his students, seeing this anime, I believe this situation will gradually improve in the near future…
Then the conflict shifted from the athletic shorts to Fuko taking on too many duties. I want to say this didn't happen suddenly. Following Hibiki into the school, the issue of long skirts existed from the very beginning of the interview. During this time, our focus was on Fuko because she was the first to actively respond to the teacher's call. Seeing her practicing jumping over wooden boxes at night was truly heartbreaking. Then we encountered more problems. It seemed Fuko was helping to fetch teaching equipment during every break, then falling down, and even taking on 5-6 class duties! [You can't let her suffer alone!](https://imgur.com/ZpvP5bF) Even if she says she likes it!
Although these are two seemingly unrelated issues, Hibiki saw through their selfish unwillingness to take responsibility, [which earned his a great deal of authority](https://imgur.com/XlBCKD3). [If the students cooperated and the classroom remained orderly](https://imgur.com/ShYr2zG), then at least the principal had no reason to continue interfering. Of course, I want to emphasize that in reality, in East Asia, most teachers wouldn't disobey orders from their superiors if the principal explicitly objected. But that wouldn't be romantic, which is perhaps one of the reasons I've always stuck with anime. I suspect the later plot will involve Hibiki encountering other students' problems and gradually resolving them. Although the plot is quite predictable. I'll still watch it with great anticipation. The atmosphere of this anime is simply too romantic and cute to resist.

It was a scene I didn't expect. They just raised their hands reluctantly, but really didn't think about Fuko's situation.
What are your thoughts on one of the lessons of this episode which is physical freedom releases the mind as well as the body?
Interesting. Kind of materialistic.
That's cool
Hibiki definitely seems like he has the best intentions.
For real
Like I said elsewhere, there's a genuineness to it I find to be simply irresistible.
>ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)
>It's really short; it shows all of Fuko's legs.
That it did. And Hibiki’s lol
>Heart-warming
Very much so
>selfish
Again, very much so
>It was a scene I didn't expect. They just raised their hands reluctantly, but really didn't think about Fuko's situation.
It definitely showed a lack of consideration on their own.
>Interesting. Kind of materialistic.
In what sense?
materialism
The basic meaning is that matter determines consciousness.
For example, when the clothes are different, the mood changes, or when you’re hungry, you simply can’t rely on willpower alone to keep going.

>
They definitely knew each other before.
> Thoughts on Fuko calling guy Hibiki Bra Man?
>
Hibiki left our Fuko with serious psychological trauma!
> What are your thoughts on Fuko wanting nothing to do with guy Hibiki?
>
> Thoughts on Fuko feeding the animals?
>
Oh, damn it, I forgot she had this task, so she was the first to arrive at school and the last to leave?
> Thoughts on Hibiki being Fuko's homeroom teacher?
>
Could this explain why Hibiki's interview was about Fuko? Wait, the principal hoping someone will come to help Fuko? This series doesn't have any real villains; they just have different stances.
> Thoughts on Fuko volunteering to help at a retirement home?

They all look like Haruta (toradora). Lol
> Thoughts on Lulu constantly thwarting Kōji and Tofu trying to get a look at the Buruma?
>
She tried her best, but she couldn't watch them 24/7 like the police.
> What are your thoughts on all the classmates deciding to rally around Fuko and show their support?
>
It felt like they hadn't fully listened to Fuko's ideas, even though they were right. It would have been perfect if they had explained things to Fuko more clearly.

So one of her motives was to make money, which also explains where Hibiki got so much Buruma.

Maybe
>Hibiki left our Fuko with serious psychological trauma!
You see to hate it
>Oh, damn it, I forgot she had this task, so she was the first to arrive at school and the last to leave?
It would seem that way
>Could this explain why Hibiki's interview was about Fuko? Wait, the principal hoping someone will come to help Fuko? This series doesn't have any real villains; they just have different stances.
I would say the principal hating men makes her evil adjacent.
>They all look like Haruta (toradora). Lol
All act like him too
>She tried her best, but she couldn't watch them 24/7 like the police.
Damn
>It felt like they hadn't fully listened to Fuko's ideas, even though they were right. It would have been perfect if they had explained things to Fuko more clearly.
I still feel like they learned their lesson to a certain degree.

Hibiki hot what he wanted
>So one of her motives was to make money, which also explains where Hibiki got so much Buruma.
