Looking for a possible magical girl anime from the 1990s?
I initially thought it was one of the "Sailor Moon" series but years later when I attempted to find old episodes online I couldn't find them anywhere. All I can remember is that each episode attempted to focus on a group of seemingly magical girls who live in a small town somewhere and have to do battle with at least two villain characters, one male and the other female who are searching after these heart crystals I think, that they remove from the bodies of innocent people which then turns them into monsters or just makes them evil. One episode focused on a girl who loved playing baseball until she got corrupted by the evil mark, another episode had a little girl and her cat. The villains thought the girl had the shard or heart crystal but it turned out to be the cat! The cat gets turned into a monstrous form and has to be vanquished, which was a rare plot twist. One of the male villains was named Max I think. There was also a creepy doll episode I remember.

That season has a plot of pure heart crystals, a male villain (Dr. Tomoe) and a female villain (Kaolinite/Kaorinite), as well as different monsters of the week. There is a volleyball episode where one of the characters rediscovers her love of the sport.
Source: I had several episodes of the VHS of this season and have rewatched Sailor Moon several times.
