What anime would you recommend to someone that is not into anime?
I like western style animated shows better. Japanese shows tends to be a little too japanese for lack of better description😁 It feels like they are made by a bunch of kids that have gooned for to long if that makes sense? The sexification and super hero tropes is something that rubs me the wrong way(sorry, not meant to offend people here)
What i've watched is:
Arcane (10 of 10)
Cyberpunk edgerunners (7 of 10, not a fan of the art style but love the universe)
The witcher: nightmare of the wolf (7 of 10)
Predator: killer of killers (8 of 10)
Ghost in the shell (6 of 10)
Love, death and robots (7 of 10)
Secret level (7 of 10)
Castlevania (5 of 10, i watched the first season. It was okay. Tried the second season and could not get into it. The characters and dialogue is to over the top for me)
Sirens of the deep (could not finish it, didnt like it)
On my watchlist is
Flow (saw a kid watching this on the plane. The artstyle was beautiful and reminded me of Stray(the game), so i will watch this soon.
Attack on titan (looks interesting, but ive heard mixed reviews)

Maquia When The Promised Flower Blooms
This is the ultimate starter anime for anyone getting into anime
> Attack on titan (looks interesting, but ive heard mixed reviews)
Mixed reviews? That's one of the highest rated shows of all time.
And I can't understand why it gets ten out of ten
I think it's vastly overrated but that's just my opinion
Ashita no Joe
Maison Ikkoku
Monster
Hunter x Hunter
Fullmetal Alchemist
Saint Seiya
Boogiepop Phantom
Aku no Hana
Naruto
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Another
Yu-Gi-Oh!
One Piece
Kuzu no Honkai
Captain Tsubasa
Fokuto no Ken
Robotech
Ranma ½ (If down there you feel anything from seeing some naked characters in random, non-erotic scenes, that's your problem because I've always seen it as humor, and not the silly, cringeworthy kind).
And movies like:
Grave of the Fireflies
Perfect Blue
And people will tell you more...
The 2020 anime Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Gou (Higurashi When They Cry: New), is a sequel to the original story, not a remake. **Don't accidentally start with Gou**, as it's full of spoilers.
(_Note: in most (if not all) regions, the only Higurashi anime on Crunchyroll, is Gou. Also, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download._).
You're right, but I specifically mentioned HIGURASHI NO NAKU KORO NI... well, yes, that must be it, the first version followed by Kai, which is where the story begins and ends (because the other series, Kira and I don't remember what other names they had, are random stories that don't contribute anything)
I haven't seen the Gou remake yet
As Gou is still called "Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: Gou", the risk of confusion is still there if you don't add something like "2006" or "followed by Kai".
To be honest, as much as I love the original, I don't even personally recommend Gou. I won't go into details, as the decision to watch it is up to you, but it's a fairly decisive series (mainly due to how it portrays certain characters (which also makes someone accidentally watching it first much more detrimental)).
Anyway, sorry if my repeated comments seem pedantic. It's just that I really want people to experience Higurashi as best as they can.
For one that is a little bit shorter that that one there is "Parasity the Maxim". Is a must-watch too.
And lastly, if you don't mind some disturbing stories, "Made in Abyss" is a good one too. Don't let the artstyle fool you. it get super grim at times.
I mean it's an ignorant take....I mean equating sexualization/exploitation with Japanese culture is pretty problematic, especially since that stuff was very common in Western media. There is a lot of anime that has minimal/no sexualization so I think your impression of anime is pretty narrow.
Most of what you have listed here isn't anime, so is this all you have seen? Just GITS and Edgerunners? Really all I am getting is you want works that target older audiences, and maybe stuff that doesn't hit on battle shonen nroms.
Some suggestions (wide variety of genres/eras)
- Cowboy Bebop - highly recommend the dub as a mainly sub watcher
- Vinland Saga/Planetes - same creator different genres.
- Psycho Pass - S1 at least
- Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Watch the first two prequel films then skip to EP3 of the main OVA. There is also the Gaiden prequel that is worth watching.
- Monster/Pluto - same creator though Pluto is shorter/newer, I liked Monster more. Both are crime dramas but Pluto is sci fi Monster more grounded
- Look Back
- Sword of the Stranger
- Ergo Proxy
- March Comes in Like a Lion
- Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
- Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song
- Odd Taxi
- Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
- A Silent Voice
- Ping Pong the Animation
- Baccano! - Highly recommend the dub
- Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blood Orphans - you can watch this standalone as a new fan to the Gundam franchise (standalone universe/characters)
- Perfect Blue
Monster
ACCA 13
*Gunsmith Cats* and *Riding Bean*, both based on a manga authored by a man who has an obsession with Detroit, and does everything he can to make a representation of its spirit.
*Trigun* and *Blood Blockade Battlefront*, two more series based on manga by an American culture otaku. The first is a western set on an alien planet, and the second is set in a New York that had been altered by a strange supernatural disaster, and offers a diverse and compelling cast of characters.
Chainsaw man
Hell is paradise
It's basically western high fantasy.
The characters are adults and behave like real adults.
Written by a woman, and it shows (positive connotation)
Very creative and organic worldbuilding/ foreshadowing.
Hilarious.
Your accusations about the anime medium are very spot-on. But there are also a few anime that are very mature. e.g. "Apothecary Diaries"
