Which Uma Musume shows should I watch?

It’s time I pull the trigger on Uma Musume, the memes got to me (my bad). I know there is Uma Musume: Pretty Derby and Uma Musume: Cinderella Grey. How important is to watch one to understand the context of the other? And if so, is there an order to them? Also saw some ONAs/OVAs and movies, are they important too?

Cheers.

Hi Kegs_And_Parleys, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

My honest answer would be - non of them.

I gotta ask why, like, genuinely curious lol

This series is beloved as hell and I'm certainly on board, what didn't you enjoy?

Well go watch them in the order of airing, there are 3 seasons actually.
It's better so you can properly be introduced to the characters and the franchise.

I have a feeling Cinderella Grey is set before the main series.

One_Bend74232026-01-04 11:55

Yea, but it doesn't *really* matter. Oguri Cap does have a few cameos in *Pretty derby* and the movie, but her only role is to use her running gag (she's got a ridiculous appetite). Even the three seasons of *Pretty derby* barely have any relation, other than the protagonist of S3 being introduced in S2.

Brilliant-Pomelo-1652026-01-04 12:00

Thanks for the info! Ive only watched cour 1 of Cinderella Grey rather than the main series I just remembered it as I looked it up at the time if I needed to watch Pretty Derby first :)

Sure, just continue on wherever you left it at. Like I said, none of any of the musume's past accomplishments get mentioned in other series, only their personalities (which, I assume, ties into the gacha garbage, but I haven't nor will I ever play that, so I wouldn't know).

They’re all good, S1 is the roughest but it was also before they had gacha budget, but still has its charm. Also why I’d recommend watching it first, since every season after is a noticeable upgrade in both story and animation.

Can be watched in any order, they have some tie ins but the stories in each one are self contained.

There’s seasons 1, 2 and 3, road to the top, beginning of a new era, Cinderella gray, and a couple of chibi shorts called Umayon and Umayuru.

Always safest to just watch in release order for most franchises tbh. At a bare minimum you get to enjoy the shows the same way the fans who were there from the start did, so it's easier to discuss as well

There are currently 3 main continuities for anime. You can start with any.

\- Pretty Derby S1 (first in release order) -> BNW OVA -> S2 -> S3

\- Road to the Top -> Beginning of the New Era

\- Cinderella Gray (latest in release order)

All of them can be seen standalone. Each entry of the series is essentially a biopic of a different horse. I've enjoyed all of them and would recommend them all. Pretty Derby season 1 leans more slice of life and comedy (it's the messiest by far but it has a surprising amount of charm), while the series becomes more dramatic from there. The most well liked entries are Pretty Derby season 2, Beginning of a New Era, and Cinderella Gray (although I personally love Road To the Top more than Cinderella Gray).
