Looking for 80/90s Cyberpunk animes

Hi guys. Imma keep this short.

Big old school anime fan.

Particularly si fi stuff.

Im currently in my cyberpunk phase after rewatchinh bladerunner/fith element.

I watched akira. I watched Cyber city oedo 808.

And after that i want more.

Can you name me must 80s/90s cyberpunk animes?

I want mechs. I want androids. Neon lights. The whole spiel.

I heard of Ghost in the shell and Ad police but am i missing something.

Id even like unknown ones. Things people dont everyone knows about.

Hi leevancleef12345, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

Bubble gum crisis and megazone 23 are good for this.

[Battle Angel Alita ](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1016/Gunnm)is a good one.

Komorebi_LJP2026-01-04 22:36

Still kinda salty they choose to make another gits anime when Alita is out there.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-04 16:43

Gunnm or Battle Angel Alita is probably the biggest one besides GitS, but I highly recommend the first manga series over any adaptation of it.

Wicked city and Goku midnight eye

I'd say Serial Experiments Lain is the king of 90s cyberpunk anime. It doesn't have the mechs or neon lights or anything, but it is an excellent metaphorical depiction of the modern internet's negative impact on us.

You may not be in the mood for it right now, however it is a must watch.

New dominion tank police.

greater_golem2026-01-04 18:53

Appleseed, GenoCyber, Battle Angel Alita, Macross Plus, Patlabor 1 & 2.

Probably a bit less known, Armitage III. Interestingly less cyborgs and more actual androids.

Not mentioned yet: Ai City and Techno Police 21C.

I think Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop count as 90's cyberpunk anime.

for something more rare there's Hyper Police.
