I want to get my mom to start watching anime and I need recommendations.
Hello, I'd like to get my mother to appreciate anime as well, and she has those basic initial prejudices like "I don't like cartoons," "I don't like watching anything subtitled," etc.
And her current boyfriend (my father passed away) is also quite picky about this kind of thing, so I thought about showing her some movies like "In Your Name" first, and for him I thought about things like Death Note, which gets you hooked in the first episode. Has anyone tried doing something like this with anime/movies that would captivate them?

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

vinland saga (there are some 18+ things not much but its peak story)
ranking of the kings (u and ur mom both will surely love it 100%)
dororo(every ep is peak)
Spy x family (its family friendly and wholesome)
full metal alchemist brotherhood (peak story like its one of the best anime)
code geass
naruto (its long tho)
i would suggest these as starters
She also really liked berserk (golden age arc memorial edition) for the most part, until something happened and then she insulted my sibling for recommending this show.
S1 made in abyss she liked as well, there are a couple more but these are the ones she enjoyed the most, especially Frieren, that will probably be her fav of all time.
Very nice story with an emotional touch
Another early one was Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Also Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night. I love the Fate series and universe! Frieren is a good suggestion I've seen in the comments!
Now I'm somewhat a veteran, having watched the entire AOT twice. I've even started watching a couple without my son - Sword Art Online and Violet Evergarden.
There's one he showed me early on that I don't recommend to start with: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure! They don't call it "bizarre" for nothing! 😆
You might also consider RWBY. It's one of my favorites and though it's not Japanese anime, it might be a way to get her past the "cartoon" aspect before needing to deal as much with subtitles. You just have to know that the animation gets much better as you go along.
Some are harder to keep up with the subtitles than others. Start out slowly and offer to pause a show now and then as she acclimates to the speed reading.
I hope she enjoys this new adventure with you. It's been an amazing way for my 26 y.o. son and I (62 y.o.) to share in something fun.
Jk. Maybe she’d like Steins;Gate
