Does Netflix Anime have less censorship?

Just finished watching beastars and WOW it has a lot of mature elements. Intimate touching scenes, mentions of sex, stripping, blood and a bunch of naughty language. Since this is a Netflix original production and doesn’t have to abide by Tv broadcasting laws in Japan I was wondering if other Netflix anime also have the freedom like this to delve into more mature themes, and if so which?

Most anime have a censored version for TV and an uncensored for streaming services and physical media. As you said, they don't need to comply with Japanese TV regulations if it's not going on Japanese TV. And welcome to anime, mature stories are everywhere in the medium. It's not like the US where cartoons are intended mostly for kids.

Pretty sure it still aired on TV, it's just that Netflix is the international license holder.

At least among Netflix-only series, Cyberpunk Edgerunners is pretty mature.

"Netflix original production" on something that was produced well before netflix even existed. It's extremely misleading wording.

If we lived in a reasonable world, it'd probably be illegal to word it that way with intention to mislead when they merely have the license to stream it.

I agree that it's misleading but I'm also pretty confident that Beastars was not produced "well before Netflix existed". It's a 2019 anime based on a 2016 manga.

It depends on the series. I don't think Netflix gets uncensored blu-ray versions of series like JoJo for instance.

I don't think Beastars ever got censored so it's not a good example even if it's one of their licensed shows. Their original anime have been generally uncensored wherever that applies.

Netflix anime is still censored in weird parts - like Jojo's Part 3 will censor Jotaro smoking a cigarette. There's censorship of gory scenes in parts 3 and 4. Not sure beyond that as I'm only through part 4 right now, though I've heard that later parts are uncensored.

I remember when jojos was on Hulu and Netflix, the NF one was censored, shadows instead of blood or wounds.

Most "Netflix Original" anime are not actually produced by Netflix and they did air on JP TV, so no. They still have to adhere to the same TV laws. Devilman Crybaby however *was* exclusively on Netflix and it *does* take advantage of that, not only by being insanely graphic but also by having episodes of varying lengths.

Devilman only exist because publishers asked Go Nagai to tone down Demon Lord Dante so they can adapt it to an anime, so he created Devilman

Demon lord dante got discontinued halfway through its serialization. Thats why 15 years later nagai made shin mao dante a retelling of the same story.
Nagai made devilman bc he had another chance to make a horror drama series a step away from his gag mangas.

Yes, and no. That was for the anime devilman but the manga devilman was a continuation in the overall story portrayed by mao dante.

The anime production started before the manga. Kinda like Evangelion, but since the anime production is lengthy, the manga ended up arriving first (one month earlier than the anime)

Devilman is not a toned down mao dante.
Devilman would likely still have come about even if devilman cartoon wasnt a thing. His input inti the cartoon wasnt that involved. This opportunity allowed him to continue drawing a horror drama and decided to have it connected to the original mao dante, a continuation of mao dantes lore.
