This might be my favorite installment in this series so far. I'm not kidding. It was so good. My favorite part was the couple of episodes where we got Loid's backstory. I was waiting for this for so long and we finally have it. For some reaosn I assumed that he was born without ever knowing his biological family. That was obviously just my assumption though, because he did know his mother and father when he was very young. Loid seemed to support the enemies of his country which always got him in trouble with his father. He never listened to him until there enemies attacked them seemingly unprovoked, which caused the deaths of his parents and many of his friends. Some time later he joined the military to fight against the enemy nation, which is where he meets Franky Franklin, the guy who's been a spy ally of his since the beginning. Franky was an enemy soldier that he was about to unalive, but Franky managed to convince him to spare him. Their conversation elaborates a lot on the themes of this series, the idea that wars are typically started by rich politicans, who willingly lie to their citizens to gain their support, and then send men, fathers, and sons to die in their place. It really is thought provoking and is definitely not the first anime I've seen to try and tackle subjects like this, but is probably one of the best to do so. After Loid returns home he discovers that the three best friends he spent his childhood with were still alive. Unfortunately they died in action not long later, and it was right after that when he was recruited by the spy organization that he works for now, using the justification that nobody alive knows who he is anymore anyways so he wouldn't be leaving anything behind or abandoning anyone.

After that was a few episodes which were also excellent. A terror group hijacks a bus that Anya, Damian, Becky, and the rest of their class was on for a field trip. The group was started many years prior by the current leader's daughter but back then it was a peaceful protest organization, although all of htem, including the man's daughter, was killed brutally. After that he took control and they became a violent group. Despite their actions I think the series did a good job of making me feel empathy for that guy in particular, (not nearly as much his two partners in crime), and after thinking back on his daughter and what she would think he willingly turned himself in. You can also see some humanity in him by the fact that, while he put collars on Damian and Anya which he said would explode, that was actually a lie and they were just useless hunks of steel. These episodes also showed more interaction between Damian and Anya, which you know I love. It's always funny and adorable. Their standing with each other hasn't progresed much yet, but I'm pretty sure less than six months has passed since the series began so I'm not too surprised. If anything I'm glad that the series is taking a bit more of a realistic approach with that.

There's a few more things I want to discuss. After they're saved Damian's mom is seen for the first time and I found her very intriguing. When she initially appears she hugs Damian, crying, as if concenred for him. Even Damian seems shocked. But then moments later we get Anya's perspective where she's reading the woman's mind and we get tons of conflicting feelings about Damian. Loving him, hating him, being concerned for him, being disappointed in him, being glad he's safe, wishing he didn't return. And the way she was scornfully looking at Damian at the time seems to justify this, and he suddenly looks scared again. It was only a couple minutes but she quickly became very interesting to me and I hope we get more with her in the future.
