What is the most polarizing anime series you come across.
To clarify, not a anime that YOU think is your personal most overrated anime, but an anime that you see alot of discourse online with a very vocal group of people who either love it or hate it. a series with devoted fans and haters.
(if it's extremely popular that will help too. the comment with the most up votes/comments with the most of that series name will help get a better understanding on what the general public think is the most polarizing)

\-Hard to not like the world/pace and overall quality of the anime.
\-The mc (at least in the anime) is morally disgusting and get rewarded for it
Rudy is about the same or worse in the Light Novels, though he gets somewhat better with time. (As in, in Novels that have yet to be adapted he does reckon with his morality or lack thereof, so that's something)
He is categorically worse in the original Web Novel, which is why they cleaned him up a tiny bit for the LNs and then anime.
I feel like people automatically assume ED is supposed to be the punchline to some crude humor joke, but incompetence in young men due to trauma is actually a pretty serious subject in the real world and wouldn't be taken lightly or for humor in a real world scenario.
So yes, an entire first cour of a two cour season in a show with fast pacing that shows that period of time was several years of his life adventuring before joining the academy, seems like a reasonable amount of time to tell the story of character overcoming serious emotional trauma?
I will respond quickly to the tied up beast girl thing. I think it was intentional that people see it as fucked up and crossing the line. Which is why Rudy, who knows his previous absolute degenerate tastes, takes the opportunity to grope one of them and see if it did anything for him. That was like the final confirmation for him that it wasn't about intensity or how much of a turn-on a fetish scenario was for him, but that his issue lay deeper. The viewer is *supposed* to see the non-consent scenario as too far. And even Rudy realizes and goes to Fitz to help resolve the situation that has gotten out of his control.
It is totally understandable to see the non-consent as an icky thing to depict in the show. But I guess I don't have as much of a problem with it because to me I see a clear intent from the writer as to why it was included in the narrative. Could it have been done in a less creepy/disgusting way? I'm sure! Did we already understand Rudy's issue after all the scenes with the elf companion leading up to that and maybe the extra confirmation wasn't even necessary? Arguably true! But I don't think it was presented as just some gross fanservice for no purpose scene either.
seems like real life
If you can look past the MC though, the world itself was really good.
No other show incites such misbehavior with such consistency in the community.
I explained why I hated the show and someone said “I hope you are never put in a position where you given care over another souls, because it’s clear you are incapable of empathy.”
That’s a stand out from the typical “leftist” or “woke crowd” insults cus I don’t buy what the show and fans are selling.
I never said there wasn't. But stuff from the fans side is generally more of the garden variety of just not getting along with people who don't like their show and generally involve the actual arguments being used. Compared to wild ad hominem attacks that the haters love to just throw out out of the blue.
> I explained why I hated the show and someone said “I hope you are never put in a position where you given care over another souls, because it’s clear you are incapable of empathy.”
I can't find evidence of that being said to you, but if you can link me to it, I'll take a look at it.
Not wasting my time.
See ya.
I might judge people for liking it, but I also don't think it's a statement of support for the things that Rudeus does in the plot if you found it interesting. It's a work of fiction, even if it's a disgusting one imo.
For the record, I love both MIA and MT.
Has moments of absolute brilliance bogged down by poor pacing, unnecessary narration and also some fights and plot points that drag out wayyyy too long.
Self-fulfilling prophecy. By saying it, you make it happen.
That said, this is only my anecdotal experience.
It was one of the first maybe 5 or 10 animes I watched in like 2001 or 2002. Everyone that I knew who'd watched it never spoke ill of it back then. My little brother, who recommended it to me, said it was a mind fuck. I was unimpressed by what he thought qualified for a mind fuck.
I was college aged, and my little brother was high school aged. As such, my opinion was developed when it was "new" because anime had just started picking up more popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s in the US, rather than in the age where it qualifies as a "classic."
Yes, I guess I'm probably one of the older people in r/anime
But I don't think you can judge the entire show just by the ending. I'd agree with you that a large large majority of people probably really enjoy the bulk of Eva up until the ending. There are so many classic scenes, legendary characters that define entire archetypes in the anime realm, super quotable and memorable moments, etc. It's really hard to deny the influence this show had overall.
So I think it bears a little clarifying, because you can find plenty of Evangelion critiques and sympathizers because of how the ending happened. But if you hate the bulk of the rest of the show, that's where you'll find more trouble finding people who agree with you.
Also just because I've thought of it right now, I think Asuka is a pretty polarizing character. Just from my personal experience roaming the internet, I've seen a lot of people that either love or hate her. Hard to find an inbetween.
There are some voices that really hate it, but they are a vocal minority. The feeling towards it is extreme. So in that regard it's polarizing. But it's fairly one sided in terms of the number of people on each side.
A bunch of 2s and 9s averaging to around 6.
The discussion for those 2 anime can get quite heated fast
Back when the Nisemonogatari toothbrush scene came out, it was basically the same as how people reacted to Episode 5 in Mushoku Tensei, people got heated.
There was a time where if you mentioned any season of the Monogatari series, you were labeled a creep/lolicon. And while that take has softened in the general anime Fandom since, it's basically exactly how people react to MT now.
What the fuck where did my time go?
edit: Oh my crab and snail gods, it's true. What the fuck?!
But to be honest, any new gen or classic big 3 anime. I don't know how much of it is twitter engagement bait, but My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer are the next two that come to mind. One Piece and Naruto fandoms seem to be in a never-ending war, Bleach gets caught in the crossfire occasionally.
I’m in the boat that loves it, but I completely get why people hate it, and I tend to not recommend it to people when asked what my favorite shows are. If someone can handle the content in it, I think it’s well worth the watch— it’s some of the best world-building in any piece of fiction i’ve ever read or watched.
The first is dead obvious why people would make a fuss about it. BDSM yuri with teenagers isn't going to sit well with quite some people. On the other hand, it sold an absurd amount of BD (8000+ average) in a time where getting 3000+ BDs is considered an achievement and in general the response was incredibly good.
Onimai on the other hand is a clash between being percieved forcefemming, the same arguments used against lolicon anime (ANN "critics" in their preview of that season tried to blast it, it got 3.9/5 from the audience anyway) and fanservice being amped up. Also some people angry that it didn't become trans wish-fullfillment, which it never was meant to be, it's a genderbend comedy CGDCT slice of life. However, these complaints fizzled out relatively quickly as the episodes passed and the consensus about this anime is that it is one of the best anime ever made in terms of production values and probably one the absolute best for the CGDCT genre (considering how many impressive productions CGDCT have, is a real achievement).
I personally love the two for all its positives and negatives and fully embrace its flaws, but both certainly had their fair share of drama.
Although both pale in comparison to actual way more polarizing anime.
I have a few trans friends who liked it for the self-insert aspect so I thought it was praised in the trans community in this regard?
And in this regard of fanservice, there were quite some trans people that already were used to fanservice in anime and in that regard absolutely loved it. But it also had quite some people that really disliked that fanservice, hated it even, notably that the Anime Feminist did not like it and the author for[ that article](https://www.animefeminist.com/onimai-im-now-your-sister-episode-1/) is trans themselves. Comments on that article are mostly negative. Has to be said, episode 1 was one of the lewdest episodes of the entire anime.
Sometimes, the self-insert aspect even worsened it, as some trans people actually tried to self-insert and found it creepy and they had the same reaction that some people had towards Mushoku Tensei. This even though Mahiro is definitely not a self-insert.
However, all of them left by episode 1, the people that stayed got to see a true masterpiece of the genre.
It is genuinely and amazing anime and quite popular aswell but there is still fuss about the stuff happened in the final movie some say he's like a father figure while others accept it
Personally it didn't bother me at all but yeah I have seen some comments about it here and there , majorly it's loved
Its either the most mid show, or its the best show, and people can argue about it for days in these threads
But the visual spectacle of combat still makes it worth watching.
not every show has to be a philosophical masterpiece.
Like the entire season, only 1 fight (against the Knight) had really good animation. And even then it was mostly "look at shiny lights"
And yet everyone was raving about the fights - no distinction between s1 and s2 (which did have much prettier fights)
It's kind of funny to me since anime is usually known for being more degenerate in general, but at least in the romance genre, anime fans seem to prefer wholesome over messy.
Seeing someone be a "pussy" ticks them off and think of stuff like "*If that was me, I woulda done this and that!*" even though they would most likely be more of a bitch than Subaru was if they personally experienced everything he went through.
So when he (not a spoiler for any specific moment, just a generalization) accidentally messes up his relationship with Emilia saying something stupid, viewers get upset because he should *know* better from experience, but Subaru will continue being Subaru, because the writer is talented enough to keep the character's identity intact even as he develops over a larger scale of time.
How you feel about the author and your happy ending does not change the fact that the Rebuilds are an objectively hot mess of writing and story telling decisions. But feelings are more important than actual substance apparently
Fairy Tail has hardcore fans, but I think most other people just find it mediocre rather than bad.
Was gonna choose 'Lunar Legend Tsukihime' too, but just remembered how overhated it is lol
Then I'd say ReZero. Its crazy how ReZero is so polarizing.
Whenever I see discussion online about a specific anime, there are usually 3 groups of people:
1. Absolute fan
2. Absolute hater
3. Everyone in between, not a hater, not an extremist glazer either, just a normal casual watcher
Usually there is one bigger group. Like, some example:
* Rent a Girlfriend / Domestic Girlfriend / One Punch Man Season 3, the "hater" group is usually what is seen online and seems to be the vast majority of the vocal commenters.
* Frieren / FMAB / Chainsaw Man Movie, the "absolute fan" is usually much bigger
* Spy x Family / Dress Up Darling / Bunnygirl / SAO... its almost never one's favorite or most hated, usually people simply... like it or are indiferent to it
But when it comes to shows like ReZero... that doesn't apply... You either love it and think its the better written fantasy novel in fiction, or you hate it and think it should be absolutely erased from existence.
Obviously there are people in all 3 groups for every anime, but I find ReZero to have such an unnatural distribution, with so many people concentrated in either "loving" or "hating" it, something that I dont usually find for most animes.
There are other titles that, like ReZero, have a higher than average concentration of people on groups "hate" and "love", such as Mushoku Tensei, Solo Leveling, Lord of Mysteries and Demon Slayer.
1. Call other people pedophiles for having enjoyed a well narrated and produced story.
2. Try to deny that the main character, an adult in a child's body who commits several acts of sexual harassment and assault on children, is doing those things in the story.
The author used a plot device where he gave the main character a new body but the same consciousness - that is, it is the same 40 year old shut-in that died at the start of the story. This creates space for plausible deniability, even though ethically it's clear this is an adult. He throttles notions of consent and growth, opting to instead show that if Rudeus had just grown up raised by a slaver, rapist aristocrat and given access to girls at a young age, he would've been happier and semi-normal, and practiced polygamy with the girls he assaulted.
We fight each other online, and Magonote knows his story is polarizing and regressive in its treatment of its subject matter.
