Don't get me wrong, it was a fine story and I enjoyed the parallel of Gene (the protagonist) and in-universe movie's protagonist (Martin), how they sacrifice everything for their craft.
I just... Why is Pompo depicted like a 10-year old girl? Is this meant to represent an actual youthful producer? Because a character like Martin Braddock is obviously a synonym for someone like Marlon Brando (older, inactive actor), and Mystia might be someone like Margot Robbie or Eva Green (experienced, sexy actress), et cetera.
But Pompo? Is she supposed to represent generational influence, through her connection to her grandfather (some kind of legendary director)? Or is this just a wink to Japan's unhealthy fascination with cute & young?
And I get that a movie like this is aimed at the Japanese audience, of course, but all the supposedly western characters bowing really discombobulated me :) But hey, that's fine, that's the unique flair of anime after all
Because it's more interesting that way? A young obnoxious genius sets up very different character dynamics compared to, say, an experienced master.
I don’t know why I more or less wrote it off for a whole year. This show slaps
I do think that opening sequence deserves particular mention for the way its storyboarded and directed, really is an outstanding piece of work, full of simple but clever touches (e.g. the title card being on the side of truck).
Really, everybody had fun making this show.

I've also been recognizing a lot of these place images lately. [](#neat)
Also, the K-On girls make for some of my favorite comment faces on the sub

I’m sure '**Sentenced to Be a Hero**' has made quite the noise with its length, high-octane energy, and film-level production. Not much going on plot wise for now due to the action eating the lion's share of the episode although the post-credit scene had given us a glimpse it. I expect the show to take a breather from the action to explore the plot in the next episode.
Meanwhile, '**Journal with Witch**' is on the opposite side of the spectrum when it comes to energy. The animation is less flashy, but by no means has inferior quality – and is more fitting for its theme. The show having a far more muted tone allowed us to bask in the cinematography and details. It employed the '*show, don't tell*' technique a couple of times. In this respect, it reminded me a lot of Shoshimin, which was one of my favourite shows of 2025. The cast are heavily grounded, and felt like real people instead of caricatures.
I think it has a lot to do with Asa narrating her thoughts in a poetic, reflective way, which feels similar to Potte. Asa reminds me of twin-tailed Potte before she moved to her dad’s hometown. Both shows are about young girls trying to sort through their feelings, with Ikoku Nikki focusing more on drama, while Tamayura leans into heartwarming iyashikei (healing).
Sentenced to be a Hero, meanwhile, I'm saving for when I have more patience for an hour long episode filled with action (I tend to zone out when there's a lot of that). Luckily second episode isn't out for another week and change so I've plenty of time.
Hanakimi got saved for later because you simply can't watch anything else after Ikoku Nikki, especially not something this frivolous. But there are two episodes of that already?! FFS why?
I also wanted to give this Kunon a looksee but that's a double episode deal as well. Not liking this trend.
And that torturers' workplace show sounded like it could be fun too.
Basically, season just started and I'm already hella backlogged. And the big ones don't even start till next week. Seasonal fatigue this early is not right. Help!
[](#concealedexcitement)
[](#thoughtful)
But man, this is so bad even as a brainless watch. The episode thread has people praising the maid - a character designed to be "best girl" - and I just found her insufferable and the show nearly put me to sleep. People actually watch this kind of thing too, huh?
Second show of the season becomes my first drop.
TOP (No particular order):
1. Liz and the Blue Bird
2. Shoushimin S2
3. Apocalypse Hotel
4. The Summer Hikaru Died
5. Chihayafuru S2
Hot Takes (No particular order):
1. Takopii
2. Rock is a lady's Modesty
3. Call of the Night S2
4. Sakamoto Days
5. 86 Part 2
May be my last year doing it so a good year to go out on, was very well received! (Unless you're an Orb fan lol)
Here's hoping to an even better 2026!
[](#grouphug)
[](#azusalaugh)
Hard to say which shows from my 2026 PTW might turn out to be my favorites, aside from the obvious ones like Spy x Family S3 catch-up. There are some classics I'm looking forward to though like GitS, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Fruits Basket.
My Hot Takes list includes three dropped shows:
1. Mashle: Magic and Muscles 3 7.62
2. Sanda 4 7.52
3. Sakurada Reset 3 7.33
4. Apocalypse Hotel 5 8.01
5. Sword of the Demon Hunter 4 7.30
Also, it doesn't include Fall, but that's on me, since I'm still far from completing my shows. (My goal is to start Winter by next week.)
[](#haaaaaaah)
I didn’t bother reading the episode discussion since people there have probably already brought this up, but I want to say it anyway. The show is "not-Fate."
\[Ep1\] >!Silo dresses like Assassin Emiya (colors look the same). The raining swords... *totally* not Gilgamesh. There’s the whole pact with some kind of divine/spiritual being. Silo summoning new swords after contracting Teoritta made me think of Shirou projecting weapons. There’s the whole “hero” theming, though this one’s a stretch considering Fate/Strange Fake has characters even closer to Kiritsugu in terms of seigi-ness. Oh, and the red tattoo that extends up Silo's arm.!<
I think all of these similarities are mostly surface-level. The show is clearly doing its own thing.
I found that the main mystery was a bit too convoluted for my taste, but the earlier half was peak sol. There isn't much happening but so much at the same time. The atmosphere was absolutely great, there is such a profusion of activity and fun and I didn"t get bored for a single minute. Kyoani really outdid itself as for the production value.
Eru losing herself in all the activities (First time I saw karuta since Chihayafuru), the cooking contest, Oreki bartering his way up.
For me good examples are **Macross Frontir** with Lion and **ToraDora** with Silky Heart (though, I am sue a lot of people disagree here).
I think a lot of people prefer Ranking of Kings second OP over the first.
Though sounding similar, I think Kaguya-sama OPs get better with each season.
Mob Psycho 100 is another series of OPs where I think people generally agree gets better and better.
Ranking of Kings is a good example.
Oh well, it's understandable now. Cheers.
Does the OP for the sequel series to a show that only had one OP count as the "second OP" of a show? Because I *love* [the OP for Selector Spread WIXOSS](https://v.animethemes.moe/SelectorSpreadWIXOSS-OP1.webm) and would hold it as my favorite from WIXOSS in general ~~shame that specific season of WIXOSS is otherwise shit but I digress~~, where [the one for Selector Infected WIXOSS](https://v.animethemes.moe/SelectorInfectedWIXOSS-OP1.webm) would've been the "first OP".
Little Witch Academia
[](#criticism)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes OP 2 would be my favorite.
Kaguya Sama Love is War S2's OP was probably the best .
Major S6 is probably the best as well.
As a big Mushishi fan I like Shiver more than the Sore Feet Song. That probably is unpopular though.
If you count movies Dirty Pair's Project Eden is one of my favorite OPs of all time.
Though yeah, I think if you evaluated the general fandom out there you would find more shows where people prefer OP 1 however, it's not a slanted as people think.
674 anime episodes for me this year, and 285 hours 59 minutes of total anime watched.
My MAL average anime rating was a 9 which sounds crazy and it is, as it only represents a single anime, Kino's Journey. I stopped scoring every anime I watched years ago but will occasionally give a great anime a score and this is the sole one I did this year.
Mecha was my #1 genre in 2025 which makes no sense to me as I've sharply curtailed my mecha anime viewings the last few years. Only mecha anime I can recall watching in 2025 was Gundam G-Quuuuux, Aldnoah Zero, Darling in the Franxx and Megazone 23. I wrapped up viewings of 86 and Victory Gundam that started in 2024. That's only 6/67.
Oregairu was flagged as the anime I spent the most time with, 37 episodes. I usually stick with shorter stuff but even then I was surprised this was the longest I stuck with any particular franchise the whole year. I did a complete rewatch of Re:Zero which is a higher number, but that was about half 2024/half 2025 so MAL didn't count it.
[Wash]>!Very comfy show so far. Would recommend.!<
having that sort of combination storefront and living space is one of those dreams i have, and i romanticize it despite not knowing how impractical it actually is, sort of like van life
Really cool to see a new show absolutely blow up like this. Haven't seen this kind of meteoric launch since Gachiakuta, or maybe even Dandadan.
[](#barakamonnotcool)
I'll be lucky to get through half the short list and the stuff on the tentative list are probably non starters, but who knows how the year will go.
While I'm at it here's my 2025 [MAL wrap up as well](https://myanimelist.net/wrap-up/TheAngryEditor/2025/anime)

One day I will also watch [Uchuu Kyoudai](https://anilist.co/anime/12431/). been one of those shows that has circled in my head for over a decade now but never get around to it. Might actually be the one that I've been sitting on for the longest after I finally watched GITS:SAC a couple years ago.
[](#mugiwait)
Same. It's been on and off my shortlist since it was airing. Hopefully this is the year I finally get to it
[](#tiredaoi)
I've also got Fruits Basket on my 2026 watch list (and Shugo Chara on my reading list).
[](#drunkhisone)
It turned out that way before I even realized it

I only watched 1 episode, but I'm in love so far.
My Hot Takes section is amusing though. Giving Betrothed a 5 and 100 GFs S2 a 6 were apparently me going against the tide. The latter makes sense because everyone seems to love it, but who knew Betrothed had such dedicated fans. Funnier though is MAL thinking me giving Fated Magical Princess a 7 was a hot take. That's a good score, come on!
Josei being at the top of my genres is a pleasant surprise. Didn't realise I was watching so much of it. Guessing that's mainly Chihayafuru. Love Polygon being in my favoured genres is throwing me though. I mean, I don't mind them, but it's not like I seek out such stories...
Being in the bottom 4% for sci-fi and fantasy is sad. Those are my favourite genres for other media (books, movies, live action shows) so need to watch more anime in them and fix this. Supernatural too, if horror is included in it per MAL's definition.
Wonder how they are determining favourite season - seems to be based on average score. It says Spring was my favourite season because I loved everything I watched (a grand total of 3 shows). But I'd say Summer or Fall has my heart. I watched a lot more, and while I may not have loved everything, some of my biggest favourites are from those seasons.
Overall, 2025 was a very good year for anime for me. It's the year I fully jumped into this well. This sub has been quite influential in my anime journey since even before I joined reddit, so very grateful to all of you. Learned a lot and discovered a lot of cool stuff thanks to you. Here's to more this year and beyond! :)
I love sci-fi too, but a lot of the recent sci-fi offerings weren't great.
I enjoyed Kowloon Generic Romance quite a bit (more than most people seemed to) but I'm not sure I'd classify that as a sci-fi. It has some cyberpunk influences in the aesthetics but it was mostly a mix of mystery and romance.
here for you.
Some obvious titles at the top, but I do want to point out [Samurai 7](https://myanimelist.net/anime/166/Samurai_7), specifically. It's a steampunk adaptation of Seven Samurai, which is a fantastic movie itself.
Also [Patema Inverted](https://myanimelist.net/anime/12477/Sakasama_no_Patema), which is one of my favorite movies.
This reminds me that I need to rewatch Cowboy Bebop. It was technically the first anime I ever watched but it was so long ago, I barely remember it aside from that brilliant soundtrack that I kept listening to over the years.
Ghost in the Shell is one I've heard a lot about and Neon Evangelion too. 86 is high up in my watchlist, just need to find the time for it.
Never heard about Samurai 7 or Patema Inverted before now. Will be sure to check them out. Thanks again, this is very helpful!
Probably, because according to MAL [my favorite season was Spring. It was also Summer. And also Fall](https://myanimelist.net/wrap-up/Syokhan/2025/anime?section=_r_4p_). All with the same average score because I only score series I really like and apparently only gave out a bunch of 9s and nothing else last year.
Those I don't feel strongly about get nothing, and the ones I actively disliked get the side-eye. Kinda makes for a skewed average though, it's true.
It shouldn't bother me, because it's a style choice to emphasize the difference between kids and grownups, like how all the generals are huge in Kingdom, but it totally bugs me.
On the flip side, I always find it funny that the Yuru Yuri cast are middle schoolers, because their gags feel way more like high school humor. I can’t imagine most middle schoolers doing Gintama-style deadpan jokes, unless I’m seriously underestimating them.
[](#sadholo)
> \#8 Shoujo TOP 3%
> \#3 Shounen BOTTOM 0.6%
No surprise there even though I saw more than twice as many shounen (nearly 20% of what I watched at that) as shoujo.
[](#ok)
> \#1 Romance TOP 0.02%
I know it's based on ratio rather than total amount, but I salute those above me that had more than 75% of the anime they watched last year be romances.
[](#takaradasalute)
> \#6 Isekai BOTTOM 4%
...and that's with nearly 10% of my anime being isekai. There's an absolute glut and people are still eating them up, huh?
[](#emptyinside)
For the most part if I'm looking for a specific series I'll check where it is using [Livechart.me](https://www.livechart.me/search).
Five Star Stories was my first hunch based on "gold mecha" and "post-apocalyptic setting" as the main aspects they remembered for an older anime that's not too obscure to show up online regularly, which already narrows things down quite a bit. I spent several minutes digging into it to confirm that the details generally lined up with their description before replying, and if it wasn't close I'd probably still be looking at other options.
I can relate to digging things up and confirming details match before replying though. I'm a bit of a stickler for getting things right like that too. :)
Weirdly enough I'm drawing a blank on summer shows right now aside from the ones that I know extended into other seasons (Witch Watch, Futari Solo Camp, Watari-kun). I've outsourced remembering that kind of thing to my lists which I keep in pinned tabs.
[So here is mine](https://myanimelist.net/wrap-up/Nachtwandler_21/2025/anime?section=_r_1_). Some surprising things but not much.
[](#katoupls)
Hidden gem tbh.

May this truly be the turning point for season 2 of yuri series.
Because I certainly didn't do that today when I continued with ikoku nikki and now I am fully teared up despite the warnings, and skipping the op and playing it at the end of the episode certainly made it worse (actually, I still cannot believe we still have shows not doing that themselves in episode 1, why).
Godd that I still have like half a tamon episode left
I haven't gotten to it yet but will try to put it last for the evening when I do.
Srsly how?
That said, can't go wrong with eating dessert first with Watanare, maybe I get to see something else get eaten.
New season also started good for me with Journal with Witch. For a bit I wondered if I missed some exciting new fantasy show when I saw people praising its name. But nope. I even had it on my PTW for this season, and pretty high as well, but never actually registered that name. I remember not being that excited about the visuals in PVs, but the animation does enough and the general (visual) storytelling is more than enough. More importantly the dialogue is pretty promising.
[The manga side](https://myanimelist.net/wrap-up/_Ridley_/2025/manga?section=_r_31_) was interesting. I'm in the top 0.05% for josei manga, the top 0.1% for BL, 0.5% for slice of life and shoujo, and 3% for yuri. Living my best life when it comes to manga. I liked the magazine breakdown at the end, showing me where my favorites came from. That's hard to keep track of sometimes.
[](#awe)[](#awe)[](#awe)[](#sobright)
Shame I switched off MAL for Anilist this year.
[](#toradorasalute)
I'll keep this in mind! Always looking for more yuri.
You watched one, right? (I'm sure it doesn't take much)
I gave it a 6 and was still only my 4th hottest take lol
Didn't you watch Soaring Sky! Precure (as it was in the awards)? It seems that history part bundles up a franchise up into the parent entry. That can make sense for typical linear start at Season 1 end at Final Season but not so for continually soft-rebooted ones like Precure and Gundam.
I guess it saved me from having 4 Precure entries as [my most time](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/d70b2996e56e.png) (Naruto, FMA and an over-count on MHA were due to only putting end years which made the dates invalid).
[](#modsalute)
[](#urbansmile)
If you liked quints, we also have mayonaka tomorrow!
Besides that, what zairaner said.
[](#thoughtful)
Nothing *too* surprising I thought. The hot takes are a couple of shows I dropped early + Black Butler and Beastars which is not my cup of tea at all and only watched because Juror duty of the 2024 anime awards literally forced me to. I expected Shounen to be in genre deviant, but bottom 0.3% is crazy, I actually do watch a good amount of shounen after all. On the other hand Shoujo not there at all, no idea how that happened. The binges were basically almost all from the past 2 weeks since I'm off work until tomorrow with a ton of free time to catch up on the backlog. Seasonal stuff was as expected.
* 102 Anime ("With 71 completed anime, you're in the top 8% of all MAL members.")
* 873 Episodes
* Hottest take: giving a 4 to Kaiju #8 season 2 ("You scored this anime lower than 99% of MAL members.")
* "Based on your scores for the year, your 2025 anime journey was Fine 6.71"
* Genre bias: Sci-Fi (top 0.2%)
* Genre deviant: Supernatural (bottom 1%)
* Most time spent: One Piece (61 hr 35 min / 136 eps + 5 films)
* Winter won "favorite season" thanks to me only finishing and scoring 4 shows, Summer should be the real winner without that (and without the bad score for Kaiju #8 lol)
- 192 anime, 2,603 episodes (putting me in the top top 2% of all MAL members).
- I don't have a Hot Takes page at all. [](#crazedlaugh)
- I was in the top 0.1% for both Mecha and Sci-Fi, which checks out. [](#mechablush)
- I spent 95 hr 42 min on the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
- And I was right about Fall 2025 being my "favorite" season average-wise. [](#hypeeyes)

That's not how you take over Amewards!
[](#elsieqq)
Anyway, my top genre turned out to be Seinen. I guess I like them, *dark and mature* ones... (Next two are Slice of Life and Iyashikei)
Biggest surprise is probably that the anime I spent the most time watching was the Monogatari series. I suppose I did watch all of it, but it was so dispersed through the year that it didn't really feel like binging, I guess.

Anyway, I'm still touted as huge iyashikei & CGDCT fan (Tamayra accounting for 9 total MAL entries must be behind this) and well, apparently having watched 407 episodes of shounens out of 975 total episodes makes me... a big shonen hater! (bottom 3%). Lol. Other than that, everything else is not much of a surprise.
* [Spice and Wolf](https://livechart.me/anime/3481) — A traveling merchant in a medieval land is joined by an ancient wolf spirit and they roam together.

[Seraphim Call](https://anilist.co/anime/2245/Seraphim-Call) - An anthology about a bunch of girls that can get a bit avant-garde at times. A bit surprising that it was a TV anime and not an OVA.
[Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still](https://anilist.co/anime/2321/Giant-Robo-THE-ANIMATION-Chikyuu-ga-Seishi-Suru-Hi/) - A cool, stylish Scifi/Fantasy OVA that blends a bunch of characters from [Mitsuteru Yokoyama](https://anilist.co/staff/98679/Mitsuteru-Yokoyama) manga and puts them in an original doomsday plot.

I am not super hopeful and the trailer didn't make it look super visually appealing (not terrible, but likely not up to the best in the genre) but lets see, I'll give it three episodes.
