Suggestions for anime with a mature, intelligent, or strong but not OP MC? Or an MC in the teacher role?

If it's not the main character, at least someone who shows up often enough. Someone kinda like Kakashi (Naruto), Dasai (Bungo Stray Dogs), or Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars)?

I've seen Naruto, Frieren, AoT, Bungo Stray Dogs, and a few others I cannot remember the name of, but I'm relatively new in anime so haven't seen a whole lot yet.

Hi MajaTerese03, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

Not sure if it fits your category of an OP MC, but two MC I really enjoyed watching were from Mob Psycho and Kaiju N#8.

I'll keep a look on the thread to see what gems am I missing 😅

JJK has Gojo, he is OP but I also think Dazai is OP in his universe so maybe that’s an option.

No_Cockroach24672026-01-05 17:56

He's not the MC but you should watch Mob Psycho 100 for Reigen.

pukupukupowpowww2026-01-05 17:58

you’ll love apothecary diaries!

Have you seen From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman? It's a show where the MC is the mentor who years ago taught all the students who would grow up to be the big heroes.

Otherwise...

Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.

Plane_Recognition_742026-01-05 18:02

Fate/Zero

Simple-Original4542026-01-05 18:11

Reincarnated as a sword ? Technically the mc while being an op sword is not really the mc but the narrator and teacher for his wielder who grind to be stronger to be a worthy master (real mc).

If you don't mind a competent, wise, and pragmatic protagonist, I'd recommend "Dungeon Meshi". Its protagonist, Laios, basically uses his knowledge of monsters to overcome a variety of different perils and scenarios that his competent party would otherwise not be able to overcome.

He is certainly not "OP", but he isn't some martial badass either. Just an average fighter with a good head on his shoulders.

If you want a hero being the pragmatic and grounded life-coach/guardian/parent of another hero, I highly recommend "Medalist". Just give it 1 episode, and it will hook you.

Bit of an obscure request but the first thing I thought of was "Akashic Records of Bastard Magic Instructor"

The other recommendations are good too
