natsume's book of friends
secrets of the silent witch
Can I ask one final thing
The gorilla's god go-to-girl
This one is peak. I initially dropped it because I thought it was a mukbang anime (not my cup of tea) but the plot really picks up after a few eps. I ended up binging the manga right after anime finished.
(Apothecary Diaries is fantasy?)
It's not fantasy if its inspiration is mostly the real world, has no monster or no kind of power.
Regardless, watch it and see if you like it. I watched the 48 episodes in like 3 days because it was just amazing.
It wouldn't be historical fiction as that would be something like Vinland Saga involving "real life" (our world's) individual historical figures, countries, organizations, events, dates, etc. And it wouldn't be historical fantasy as that's also usually used to refer to something set in our world *with* something magical/supernatural added, like Inuyasha, Mushishi, Kimetsu no Yaiba, etc.
But there's no one universal standard on it and that's just one interpretation and usage (one I happen to use too).
Likewise, because the only fantastical element of Apothecary Diaries is that it takes place in another world (specifically the world of "China with the serial numbers filed off") then we've gotta classify Sherlock Holmes as fantasy because 221B Baker Street doesn't exist, Breaking Bad is a fantasy because it takes place in an alternate reality where Los Pollos Hermanos is a real restaurant, and every movie or TV show that ever used the (555) area code is a fantasy because they all take place in a parallel world where that's a valid area code and not just used to keep annoying people from dialing real numbers because they saw it in a show.
Now, as for all the other cases where someone could technically argue that every fictional series and film is fantasy because they all have some fictional detail of their world (even characters themselves) which don't exist in our own, sure, but that can be said for a lot of different things. It's a question of where one draws the line, which with genres and subgenres and all that in film and literature and everything else has always been fluid, subjective, and somewhat messy.
Individual towns and sometimes cities are often fictional while still existing within a larger real state/province/region of a real country or just a real country with the region not named. And so forth.
But I don't consider a series a fantasy by having a fictional character (basically they all do) or a fictional restaurant or grocery store or school or even a fictional town or city. But it changes when it comes to large scale-phenomena like entire countries, continents, planets (if implied to be a substitute for Earth and our Earth not existing, as opposed to just taking place on Mars or Neptune or some distant other planet in our own galaxy or elsewhere in the universe), etc.
Where everyone draws the line is going to be different. That's why you get the multiple rival definitions and understandings and it's never been an exact science or settled subject. "Why is this thing grouped with this set of things versus that?" Far beyond art, you see that even in taxonomy and so much else. There is arbitrariness, tradition, preference, etc. behind a lot.
I never said this. I said that I can see why someone could technically make that argument, but implied that I personally don't agree with it.
I assume you're referring to where I wrote this:
> **other cases where someone could technically argue that every fictional series and film is fantasy because they all have some fictional detail of their world (even characters themselves) which don't exist in our own, sure, but that can be said for a lot of different things. I was mentioning it as a hypothetical of a position someone else could hold or argument they could make, not personally endorsing it or stating it as my own. I then went on to say why I disagreed with it.
Regardless, this isn't a subject where we need to agree or there ever was some universal gold standard. It's always been messy like this with genres, which is why you see different works often listed and categorized differently in different stores or on different websites or the usage of terms fluctuating over time.
It's one of those messy subjective things like essentially all genre classification.
Yona of the Dawn(season 2 was finally announced 😀)
Raven of the Inner Palace
Saiunkoku Monogatari(not really fantasy, but neither is Apothecary Diaires and its similar)
To Your Eternity
Spice and Wolf
Also even though its an isekai I'd still reccomend Ascendance of a Bookworm as its very different from standard iseaki and similar to many of the series you liked.
Kemono no Souja Erin
Twelve Kingdoms
Kenpuu Denki Berserk
Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken 2020
Guin Saga
Somali to Mori no Kamisama
Majo no Tabitabi
Dragon Ball
Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai
Inuyasha
Saiunkoku Monogatari
May I ask for One Final Thing and The Fated Magical Princess that Made Me a Princess.
The first is about a noble lady that absolutely loves solving everything with her knuckles. I highly recommend.
The second was less exciting and more about a girl trying to win the love of her father.

Danmachi is a somewhat tamer but still occasionally gritty shounen with top tier worldbuilding. S1 makes it seem like it's gonna be mid until you get about halfway through and it blows you away, then S2 is back to being kinda mid and makes you think maybe S1 was just a fluke, then S3 onwards are just nonstop peak. Sword Oratoria is the spinoff meant to be watched after S1 but didn't get any more seasons. I would say this series probably has the second-coolest depiction of magic after Frieren.
Katanagatari is one of my favorite shows of all time and an actual masterpiece. Needs no introduction, watch if you want to experience art.
Yuusha ga Shinda is actually funny af and combines crass humor with genuine charm and great character acting, with multiple VAs getting to flex their range by acting as bodyswitched characters.
