My Thoughts on May I Ask For One Final Thing?
I was actually looking forward to this one based on the premise alone, but it was kind of disappointing. It wasn't terrible, I just think the gimmick got old well before the series was over. That gimmick being a princess named Scarlet who has an extremely violent nature and especially loves to beat the hell out of nobles. The first episode was pretty great. it was incredibly entertaining and cathardic watching her pumble these selfish, evil, arrogant nobles. She can apparently also use two types of magic, one that increases her physical strength, and the other that allows her to speed up time around her making it seem as if she's moving way faster than she actually is. But that's the gimmick that sadly got old for me later. I don't think the series ever became terrible, and that's not to say there weren't moments in the late stages of the anime that I didn't find entertaining. in fact one of the biggest highlights is when she beat the hell out of the woman who essentailly stole her fiance in episode 1, although I was a bit confused on her motivations, and I think that's important because she was the main antagonist of the entire series. I don't think her perosnality in general gets old, just the events surrounding her. I do, after all, love myself a violent, fowl mouthed woman.
Commentaires
I admit, I have not watched that last episode, yet. However, my enthusiasm for the series has waned during the season. It started out at 9 and now it's at a 6-7 (as far as *enthusiasm*). Again, without seeing the last episode, it's probably a 7 or 7.5 out of 10 for me as far as a MAL rating. To note, it has to be very good or very enjoyable to get to 8. While I have plenty of 8/10's, I think I have roughly a dozen shows that are at 9/10 or above - not many.
I will say, MANY anime are pretty fun or strong shows early on in a 12-ish episode run and don't quite sustain that to all 12-ish episodes. That's pretty common, in my opinion. Much more rare are the shows that are ok early on and get better.
I don't think it really had much more there, there other than the schtick of Scarlett punching people. Once they had to do something else as well.... there was the shojo tropes, sure, but I dunno. The other characters are just kind of there (maybe with some trope overlay). The plot and kingdom stuff is trying to be interesting, but .... it's just mostly providing some mooks and bosses for Scarlett to punch.
Frankly, it was worth May I Ask For One Final Thing? was worth it for the first couple episodes. And it's fine, I enjoyed it (assuming that last episode isn't a gong show). Glad it was around.
Scarlett's still getting my vote - eventually - in the seasonal Best Girl competition going on. I'll probably wait until the quarters or semis, depending on matchup, but I'll take her over the other top seed, any and every day of the week.
As far as the season goes, I enjoyed the A Mangaka's Weird Wonderful Workplace much more. I've rewatched most of those episodes, fun characters, enjoyable banter, nice comedy. My show of the season - which I would not have said 6-8 weeks ago. A show that sustained it's thing through 13 episodes, which is maybe easier if there's no real plot. I've watched few other shows - Kashiwada-san, Alma-chan, Monster Meat Milady, etc - also fine. Not a particularly strong season. Admittedly, I haven't watched "This Monster Wants to Eat Me" because I wasn't sure I was in the mood for what it might be. Maybe I should give it a go. Seems popular among the Best Girl voters.
I just couldn't stand the intro they did in the first episode. It was when they made FMC narrate and go "here's the story of how I did this, but before we talk about that we have to rewind back to the very beginning".
Idk why but I just cringe really hard when I hear narration like that.
You show up to the B monster movie to see.... monsters and scream. Does it do that?
This one - you show up to see (shojo) MC gleefully punch villains. And then the show.... is basically that.
Credit for being what it says on the tin.
Or did I misunderstand completely? Do correct me.
A fun gimmick but then nothing of note happening beyond that.
It has some highlights where it comments about aristocratic station. It has some vanilla but otherwise decent politics. The set up of the antagonist was novel and fresh.
But ultimately the show delivers on its promise of having a court lady punch people.
Scarlet is a fun female lead, in a genre that's seen a lot of examples over the last couple of years.
Her interactions with Prince Julius were also fun, demonstrating at the end that despite her overwhelming physical power he was still a match for her.
With first 2 episodes I signed up for Scarlet beating up people, and priceless banters between her and the prince.
I got not much of that, some weird power-fantasy, that was trying to be a serious story and slapstick at the same time, which really bugged me.
And as funny as it is to watch a noble girl punch the living daylights out of everybody.... Scarlet really is an absolute Mary-Sue. They kinda made it feel like there was going to be a cost to her powers, but then bish-bosh it was just wiped away without second thought.
It has some interesting ideas, like an actual isekai-character that isn't the protagonist, but instead the antagonist.
But ultimately instead of feeling like the characters were in a sensible living breathing world, it's more like the plot demanded that some places and characters exist. So the whole thing feels rather lackadaisical and not well constructed. Reminds me of those old 90s fantasy anime where suddenly medieval knights will come across a ramen cart in the forest. Only here, they have a Japanese themed hotspring town in the middle of this mish mash of medieval-victorian stuff cause why not? The villains were all one-note and not very interesting beyond Terenezza. Everybody was just some moustache twirling evil background dork with no backstory that solely exists to get punched. The entire Palmian cult are like that. Kyle gets written off right off the bat. Everything is just very 'convenient' for the main characters to overcome.
I do think Scarlet and Julius are fun characters and they pretty much carry the whole thing. But they would've done better in a different setting or story instead of this.
With respect, I am wondering if you watched the show at all based on this comment. Her motivations are pretty clear; heck there's a giant flashback in the last episode or so that explains it all.
So the reason Scarlet punched Terenezza in ep 1 was for being a smug bitch and moving in one Scarlet's fiance, who Scarlet was arranged to marry prior to episode one. Scarlet didn't particularly like the guy (in fact she hated him), but the marriage was something she was doing for the good of her family and Terenezza's stealing the prince at the last minute basically humiliated Scarlet in front of the entire kingdom.
As for why Terenezza was a main antag...spoilers incoming.
[May I ask for one final thing spoilers]>!Terenezza was born in our world and lived in Japan. She was not popular and kind of a femcel and hated everyone around her for being happier than she was. Palmia, one of the gods of the show's world, kills her and isekai's her to the show's world making her a leading figure in Palmia's religion. There Terenezza uses her goddess-given powers to make everyone love her and fill out all her fantasies of being the leading heroine adored by all, mostly through mind control. The total opposite of Scarlet who doesn't want attention or love but has people falling all over her.!<
I somehow missed that she was a bird the whole time
I submit this is the real One Punch Man Season 3
