The Character Intro and the scene is absolute peak perfection plus the song is absolute awesome.
I can't wait for next week episode a new venture begins.
Also I can't wait for Henshin Sequence.
Feels like the Saint Seiya Omega vibes to me.
35 years after the Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors repelled the demons and became heroes...the world is at peace, the DST is organizing the next generation of Troopers and all is well. Until the demons invade again.
Hearing the hits of the 80's while innocent people are mercilessly slaughtered is...something. Poor Junya Enoki loses his grandma!
The DST has the base suits down, but it's clear that their rank-and-file members don't stand a chance against the Demon sides' 10 Braves...well, except for Ryu (Toshiki Masuda!), who comes off as the most skilled and heroic character so far. And he looks cool!
Turns out one of the "demons" they've caught is actually a human! One who resonates with fire and an armor! Meaning he might be a true Samurai Trooper despite all the people he killed! Considering this operation is being run by Yagyu (Sayaka Kinoshita!) from the OG show, I can imagine this is pretty personal to her.
So Gai is the "prince" of the demons? All the 10 Braves react badly to his going missing and treat Saizo (Kosuke Toriumi) abandoning him as a sign of betrayal. Saizo, for his part, even attacks the DST base seemingly to track down and kill Gai? Or to test him?
Poor Musashi (Ayumu Murase!). His "team" treats him like a gopher and he's worried he's not cut out for this...he only enlisted to follow his big brother who he's always relied on since they were kids, only for said older brother to get kicked out while Musashi stayed behind. And yet, Musashi still tries his best.
Well, no wonder these DST guys weren't given armors...they're utterly trash. They see the writing on the wall and basically bail, looting like common criminals and abandoning people in actual need. Even worse, they ensure said people in need die along with Musashi so there's no witness to their crimes. Hard not to think they had what happened to them next coming.
Of course then Gai walks in and starts slaughtering them...while the mark of "righteousness" burns on his neck, though then our Emissary of Fire turns his blade on Musashi!
And we get the OP at the end! Featuring our new Samurai Troopers in their civilian guise paralleled with their armors, before we see them heroically come together as a team as they battle the 10 Braves and their own issues to become heroes like the originals.
They showed chaos, but I dont think they showed outright mass slaughter.
I need an ibuprofen for my back pain now...
Gai is a main character that completely deviates from the norm, and I guess that was intentional. I also like the fact that the government, despite being semi-useless, actually thought about the risk of the Yoja coming back to wreak havoc again. I really enjoyed it.
I was genuinely surprised that they showed him killing innocent people like that, let alone having him legit start off with the Demons.
Obviously the DST Troopers were trash but he still mercilessly slaughtered them and it seems like Ryu is going to have to save Musashi.
I'm really curious how he'll come around to fighting for humanity and truly embodying the "righteousness" of the Emissary of Fire.
Well his virtue, like the previous main character, is something like "the heart that respects compassion" so he can still be a prick (maybe NOT like in this episode though) and be a Samurai Trooper.
I have to add that since it's a sequel, I hope they briefly (just as minimum info) explain what happened between the original series and this one, because, well, the ending of the original series was pretty much "final" regarding certain events.
The enemy is the Yoja (demon) empire, which also appeared in the original series, whose plan is to merge their world with ours.
The empire has both grunts warriors and people who don similar armors as the Samurai Troopers.
I think that's the minimum basic info. The first episode of the new series does a good job to introduce the viewer to the basic worldview.
But yes, this series has far less restraint regarding violence.
Hearing Namida no REQUEST by The Checkers made me go "oh yeah, this show was made for me."
It helps that Nasuti is such a key part in the new series too, as I related to her **so much** in high school (I even had a red jeep as my first car, hahaha!).
Now if there's ever a reference to Shuten Douji along the way, then this will be my favorite reboot *ever*.
For me it will be if [Spoiler for the original series] >!The Kikoutei will appear!<.
[OVA spoilers] >!The armor were actually instruments of evil. To seal them away the boys had to sacrifice themselves.!<
Someone posted above how the OVA’s were crap and I don’t disagree. However at the time it was great to see the team again. I hope we find out where the OG are since they would easily be late 40s early 50s now. Course they could Yasahime the OG and make it where they have been locked in some dimension where they don’t age. Like what happened to Inuyasha and Kagome.
On the plus side, the anime has already introduced a 50+ years old Nasuti/Mia as the DST head. Presumably the story might bring in Ully/Jun later on, although he'd be in his 40s by now.
RIP the initial team of heroes but they were both mostly useless and terrible people anyway.
The singing was an interesting bit, added a lot to the episode.

OG series: five young teens who we don’t really know anything about show up with their own armor, use it to fight the demon world. They have special spiritual virtues and are the only ones who can wear the armor. They have “sub armor” and then their full “armor gear” they can put on. They are very earnest and want to save the world even though a couple struggle at times because they don’t want to fight and be violent. The final movie ended with their friend, a woman, announcing the armors to the Japanese government. The fate of the five is unknown at this point.
New series: Much later, the woman is now in charge of a government group that recruits similarly aged teens to train to be troopers.
They are only wearing what looks like the “sub armor” and can’t transform into the full armor, apparently because none of them have the spiritual energy of the original five bearers. I think the woman is hoping they can find five more guys like the ones from the first series out of all their recruits, but her group has to pretend the current five “troopers” are as strong as the original five that saved Tokyo to keep getting funding.
In the OG series, the guys couldn’t wear each other’s armors so in this new one it’s weird when the kid in teal (water) gives his bracelet to the guy in a green jacket (lightning) and he changes into green sub armor. My theory is that the bracelets are all just tech and don’t actually have much if anything connected to the actual armors.
Not sure if that helped give you some context, but I tried!
Gai’s virtue text (Righteousness) also glowed when he kills the fake trooper who attempted to murder the teal kid and the innocent bystander kids. It’s an interesting take because I don’t think Gai killed out of righteousness, but the act itself was righteous unlike his actions during the invasion.
It’s possible that the new show’s guys themselves don’t know they have that sign of the virtues, and no one else has ever noticed either since no demons have come around since the attack in the original series. I imagine if the government group knew, all of them would have been the poster boys instead and actually been given the full armors.
Then there's the poster boys Samurai Troopers, it's unfortunate they weren't good people and I'm wondering if the reason Yama got disqualified for misconduct is because they were involved somehow. I thought after awakening maybe Gai could sense something but it looks like he was just killing Samurai Troopers because of his original goal, as that's how he was raised.
I don't know how they'll make Gai work together with the Samurai Troopers so I am intrigued by the development in this series. Green guy feels like a walking death flag though. He has that big brother that will sacrifice himself for his little brothers vibe going on. They did emphasize that 15 years old is when they're powers are at their peak and he feels like he's in his 20s, unless that was a lie.
I could have *sworn* the initial promotion reveal of the characters had someone else as the green-coded trooper...!!! Ryu was one of the "last" to be revealed along with the pink-haired character in early promotions
Edit: Uh-oh (dunno if links are allowed, but here's one visual from a print promo on the official account)

(That said, I really hope he stays as a mentor character. I get the feeling he was a former trainee and a former trooper)
EDIT 2: sorry. Formatting/duplicate paragraph spotted 🫠
A solid first episode for throwing a whole bunch of stuff at the audience and rolling with it. Plenty of things need explaining and there's time for that as we go.
While we're here, those are the most cursed flavors that I could imagine being combined with yakisoba.
Certainly made good use of this being a continuation with decent amount of off screen world building and intrigue.
I am sure they will appear just hate they ain’t the focus
I watched the og series where it was called Ronin Warriors it has a okay dub but had the 90s adjustments but not as bad as others of the time, mostly names changes.
So this does give a decent summary at the beginning of the first series and sets up the world 30 years later wonderfully. I like after failing the first time the government actually tried to upgrade to able to do something about another invasion but only got up to beating up tin can fodder level.
Nasti (dub: Mia) looking good for being 50, I like how she is still a prominent figure and probably is the highest authority about anything to do with the troopers. The jewel she has will hopefully be explained as the series goes but [OG Series] >!Its called the Jewel of Life and does more than identify troopers!<
Ryu has so many flags I'm highly interested what's gonna happen to him. Musashi, poor guy got stuck with some terrible people but his fortune was accurate.
Gai is gonna be interesting I love the fact he likes 80s Jpop and going to be the group foodie.
OP song is fire. In regards to the tvs [Og Series] >!There are actually 9 armors. 4 of them during a previous invasion got corrupted by the nether realm and became the 4 warlords, 1 got a redemption arc and should be around at current time, the other 3 at the end of series stayed in the nether realm!<
I'm gonna try and post each week and if there is someone or something that was changed and was from the OG series I'll give the name change from the American dub. I'm a long time lurker on the sub so this be my first discussion thread for a series :3
I'm only invested in Naste right now.
