Some people just have shit taste and/or short attention spans. They don’t like shows with plots that require any actual thought to understand or character that are complex they just want to turn their brain off and look at the pretty lights.
Fortunately there are plenty of shows like that out there.
He’d probably enjoy Solo Leveling.

I love shows with deep plots and advanced knowledge bases to understand, but I didn’t enjoy Attack on Titan. I just couldn’t handle the emotional damage of so many character deaths.
I do count it as a great anime though. It’s just not something I personally can deal with.

Edit: similarly, not everyone that likes Solo Leveling has shit taste, but everyone with shit taste thinks Solo Leveling is “peak”.
