The best female protagonist
So i have recently finished frieren and was gonna ask for recommendations with good female protagonist like that.. but i came to the realisation that when people recommend anime with female mc its a bunch of Mary Sue and some dude who is the deuteragonist no offence i like fairy tail but Lucy is not frieren level and inuasha not escaping this troupe either.
So then I looked at what I watched already. Emma from promised Netherland, Katherina from Bakarina, Nausica and Maomao are peek... like legitimately I will fight u to the death on that hill.
But what are yall thoughts who do yall think are the best female protagonist.. isekai included cause those have some serious bangers

Kaguya Shinomiya (Love is War)
These 2 stood out to me. Mostly because I personally think it's REALLY rare for anime to have a character with a very *human* writing. Hilariously both of them are INTJ .
Attack on Titan also have fair share of good, bad, underused and over used female characters. But it's a good mix, plus the story carries the show.
Chihiro from spirited away is really one of the best things for children, both male and female because the whole premise of the movie is dealing with uncertainty and the fear of unknown, especially as a kid, those things are life or death situations.
Chainsaw Man is what you are looking for if you want to see well-written female antagonists. If you saw the Reze Arc movie, trust me, its only the beginning. 2nd half of the manga is where it gets from great to a masterpiece.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners had Lucy and Dorio. Rebecca is not my type of character but I get why people love her.
Hibike Euphonium and especially the movie Liz and the Blue Bird by Naoko Yamada is one of my fav movies I've ever watched. Mentioning Naoko Yamada, you should definitely watch A silent Voice, the main lead is a female-disabled teen dealing with self-acceptance and bullying. I need to watch her latest movie, A Colours Within, which has like 93-94% on Rotten tomatoes but unfortunately bombed.
Violet evergarden.
A couple characters in JJK, My hero and any shonen that has come out post covid has a lot of female characters done okay-ish. Older shonen, One piece has the best female ensemble cast.
Edit: More shows that I remembered a few minutes later: Bocchi the Rock, K-On, Revue Starlight (can't be explained in words but only one word, ART), Blue Box (especially for romance), a place further than the universe (coming of age, adventure)
* Oumae, Kumiko from Hibike! Euphonium
* Matoi, Ryoko from Kill la Kill
* Kaname, Madoka (+Homura) from Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
* Cocona and Papika from Flip Flapper
The Anime isn't out yet but I also think Coco from Witch Hat Atelier is fantastic written (or honestly any other Character in the series).
**Chitose Karasuma** - *Girlish Number:* goes through a lot in her short run. She's confident, has some maturity but a lot to learn and gets repeatedly humbled.
**Liko** - *Pokémon Horizons:* - much like how Frieren doesn't know the modern world and how to respond to certain issues, but Liko goes through the whole process, is introspective and witty, and in my opinion is head and shoulders above any other FMC
**Kanon Shibuya** - *Love Live:* You can put any Love Live MC here and you'd be right. Kanon's story is about self confidence and later on surpassing limits thought impossible. Kanon is the only Love Live protagonist I think is the strongest character in her show and the Superstar cast is stacked as is.
**Mitsuha Yamano** - *Saving 80,000 Gold:* here's your isekai entry and one I think is always in the conversation. Her abilities defy the entire concept of power scaling but her inquisitive nature and ruthlessness is where she shines. She doesn't care what other people think unless she feels embarrassed by it which adds a human nature to a character that is usually willing to kick anyone to the side. She only gets better when you finish the anime and move on to the light novel and empowers other women to be like her. She's awesome and definitely my second favorite FMC.

Nana is about two young women and their different goals in life. However the main protagonist is rather naive and sometimes immature (it's a coming of age story after all).
Kurage Hime is about a group of young women finding the courage to express themselves.
In Dorohedoro, Nikaido, one of the main characters is a strong willed women.
Keep your hands of Eizoken! follows a group of girls beyond the usual "cute girls doing cute things" stereotype.
Revolutionary Girl Utena is a classic with a strong female lead.
ascendance of a bookworm

dramatic: Fumi (Aoi Hana), Hanabi (Scum's Wish), Ohana (Hanasaku Iroha), Miu (22/7), Kumiko (Hibike Euphonium)
lighthearted / comedic: Chitose (Girlish Number), Haruhi (Ouran High School Host Club), Akari (Aria), Mitsumi (Skip and Loafer), Akko (Little Witch Academia)
action-y: Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena), Hana (Hugtto Precure), Ramona Flowers (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), Ryuko (Kill la Kill), Hibiki (Symphogear)
Honorable mentions for Kanbaru (Hanamonogatari) and Nadeko (Nademonogatari / Monogatari Off & Monster Season). Can't give them proper entries since Monogatari as a whole is mostly Araragi's story, but the arcs with these two as protagonists are great.
Ohana (Hanasaku Iroha)
Togame (Katanagatari)
Mitsumi (Skip and Loafer)
Aoi (Shirobako)
Shirayuki (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime)
Ryuuko (Kill la Kill)
1. Akari Mizunashi - Aria
2. Misaka Mikoto - A Certain Scientific Railgun
3. Violet Evergarden - Violet Evergarden
4. Youko Nakajima - The Twelve Kingdoms
5. Motoko Kusanagi - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
She's badass.
I am also a bit partial to Sakura, from Cardcaptor Sakura, that has always been my nº 1 favorite anime, I think she is an amazing female protagonist, but if I am to be objective, I think in terms of writing, she may not be on the same level as Maomao.
A remarkable example of an anime that doesn't have a super great plot, pretty basic, but in my opinion, gets carried by how well the protagonist works within that plot is Strike Witches. Yoshika just nails the "reluctant warrior" story arc.
Madoka from Madoka magica is pretty interesting as a protagonist. And Ahiru from Princess Tutu is very interesting too.
A honourable mentions to female leads who are not protagonists, but carry the anime on their shoulders, like Takagi from Teasing Master Takagi-san or Rikka from Love, Chunibyo and other delusions. Also, Madoka Ayukawa, from Kimagure Orange Road and Kaori from Your Lie in April.
* Koto - Kyousougiga
* Hitomi - Escaflowne
* Saki - Shin Sekai Yori
* Re-l - Ergo Proxy
* Anne - Anne Shirley
* Kino - Kino's Journey. Although Kino's gender has no real impact on the story at all
* 2B - Nier Automata v1.1a
* Kumiko - Sound! Euphonium
* Ryuko - Kill la Kill
The anime was more of an intro to the overall story which gets much better in the manga, but another season was finally announced.
* Yona from yona of the dawn
* Haruhi from ouran high school host club
* Inori from medalist
* Kino from kino's journey
