It's a good bit, but it _is_ a pretty old one. Bakemonogatari did something similar for Chiwa Saitou [in like 2009](https://shadowzael.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/hitagi4.jpg), which was expanding a joke taken right from the LN. And Kaguya's production might even have some of those same former SHAFT staff still working with them.

Iirc the joke was also in the novels, but of course was more meta/landed better once it was actually animated and voice acted.

The novels used to poke fun at the thought of having an anime adaptation quite a lot until it got one.

I'm not happy with how they skipped a bunch of content to get to the latest project, but overall I do strongly recommend it. The characters are great, and the situations they get themselves into are uproarious.

It's a lot sillier and less grounded than Horimiya, but has some similar emotional payoffs.

I couldn't tell you. I jumped into the manga after seeing the first episode of the anime, kept current with both, and never went back when they were done.

The anime does have some really fun original content, but it also skips a few chapters of the manga here and there. If I were to revisit it myself, I'd probably find a guide of the skipped chapters and content, and just read those during a watch rather than rereading the whole thing.

Also, beware that they absolutely butchered the adaptation of the fanservice sidestory. Rather than making fun of fanservice, it revels in it, completely missing the point.

Don't sleep on the official doujin either. It starts off kinda trashy (but not too trashy) as you might expect, but quickly moves past that to have a lot of fun with noncannon stories and casting the characters in alternate roles.
