Are there animes about anime?

I spend a large part of my free time watching anime, talking about it with others, and engaging with it creatively. Animes mean a lot to me and have helped me in many difficult real-life situations. hence the question:

Are there animes where the story revolves around anime or manga being an important part of the plot?

Shirobako

DMmeNiceTitties2026-01-07 20:23

Shirobako.

Want an anime or manga about manga? Bakuman.

Sad_Hospital58662026-01-07 20:23

I know one ..
Bakuman

RailGun2562026-01-08 02:37

that was more Manga and a little bit of voice acting but its still a good one

Artsy7272026-01-07 20:23

Shirobako, its all about anime production, deadlines, etc.

-seoulite-2026-01-07 20:23

Bakuman!

ScarRufus2026-01-07 20:24

Gekkan Shoujo

TianDogg2026-01-07 20:30

Shirobako covers the industry in pretty good detail, including almost all of the production process. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken is about the creative process of making anime. I really love both shows and recommend them!

DirCurrFluxCapacitor2026-01-08 05:10

Which character from Shirobako became a meme/avatar for overworked animators?

TianDogg2026-01-08 05:45

Pretty much all the characters are shown as being overworked. There’s even a scene early on where one of the contracted animators collapses from exhaustion.

LusciousJames2026-01-07 20:37

Shirobako's the best one; I also I liked this one from a few years ago, Anime-gataris:

And this one about a struggling voice actress, Girlish Number:

Mitsuyan_2026-01-07 20:39

Yes! There's a few that tackle it.

* Oreimo sees the main girl write a novel that gets an anime adaptation.
* Girlish Number is about anime voice actors.
* A Mangaka's Wonderful Workplace is exactly what it says.
* 2.5 Dimensional Seduction is about the fictional manga The Ashford Chronicles. They're such otakus that the gang can start doing otaku moves later on.
* Eromanga Sensei is about light novels. Not entirely what you're after, but worth a mention.
* ZatsuTabi is about a mangaka looking for inspiration.
* Mono also has it as a subplot.

scratchfury2026-01-08 06:45

A Sister's All You Need had this:

Goeppertia_Insignis2026-01-07 20:39

Genshiken, Shirobako, Gekkan shoujo Nozaki-kun, Bakuman, Egao no taenai shokuba desu, Eizouken ni wa te o dasuna, and Zenshuu come immediately to mind. I'm sure there's plenty more.

Nachtwandler_FS2026-01-08 01:24

There is also Mangirs, Comic Party, Doujin Work from the top of my head.

bocchibunn2026-01-08 03:15

I was waiting for someone to recommend Zenshuu!

ClemFire2026-01-07 20:40

For a show about making manga, last season there was A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace

kngt2026-01-07 20:41

Animation Runner Kuromi - comedy about the animation studio (similar to Shirobako)

Girlish Number, Seiyuu's Life - about VAs

Genshiken - about different aspects of otaku culture, although 2nd season became strictly about BL

landragoran2026-01-07 20:42

Keep your hands off Eizoken

FTaku88882026-01-07 22:31

Definitely reccomend. Visually amazing, great characters, and an all around fun show

PinkPepperpuff2026-01-08 05:03

First one I thought of. The characters are great, especially how they get together, but it goes in to the making of anime, too, and I think at least one of the tools. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I really enjoyed it when I saw it the first time

insuline042026-01-07 20:45

Yes, several anime center the industry. Shirobako follows friends chasing anime production dreams, exposing deadlines and teamwork chaos. Bakuman dives into aspiring mangaka's rivalries and serialization struggles. Oshi no Ko twists idol fame with dark entertainment secrets.

jacebaby972026-01-07 20:54

Look Back - but be warned, it's sad

littlecolt2026-01-07 20:59

Zenshu kinda

Left-Night-11252026-01-07 21:03

Martian succesor Nadesico

eatnhappens2026-01-07 21:08

Red Ranger in another world has some great meta-jokes, kind of about anime and/or contrasting it with other kinds of entertainment

leave1me1alone2026-01-07 21:12

Eizoken

nullv2026-01-07 21:26

The last episode of the OVA series Golden Boy is about making an anime movie. They go over the whole process and the manga author even has a cameo.

septesix2026-01-07 21:51

Not on the anime studio itself , but “The Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio” goes into quite some details on what the industry is like from seiyuus’ POV. The anime cover mostly just regular anime’s. But the lightnovel even goes into details on how they work with the cross media IP

Nachtwandler_FS2026-01-08 01:22

Same with Sore ga Seiyuu / Seiyuu's Life.

nin_ninja2026-01-07 22:05

Eizouken

EconomyProcedure92026-01-07 22:06

Comic Party & Comic Party Revolution about making fan manga

Dojin Works is also about that

cclmcl2026-01-07 22:06

Sasaki and Miyano fits i think. One of the male leads got the other male lead into BL manga and that stays a big part of the series

Pinky_Boy2026-01-07 22:13

shirobako is an anime about anime production iirc

keep your hands off eizouken is about the brainstorming/worldbuilding part of an anime

VoidEmbracedWitch2026-01-07 22:25

I've seen most I know mentioned already, but there's a glaring lack of Otaku no Video in this thread so far.

Macamagucha2026-01-07 22:30

Bakuman!

It's from the creators of Death Note.

I'm currently watching it (middle of season 2) and I absolutely love it.

ComfortablePhase922026-01-07 22:44

Witch watch has a few episodes it goes all INCEPTION style

shapular2026-01-07 22:51

Not as good as Shirobako or Bakuman, but since no one mentioned it, Comic Girls is good if you like moe anime.

Paulrusu2026-01-07 22:58

Zenshu

ThornyRequiem2026-01-07 23:17

Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun is a good one, if no one’s mentioned it already!

Kliptik812026-01-07 23:33

Season 2 of "Oshi No Ko".

Broad-Connection-5892026-01-07 23:47

paranoia agent

ExpensivePractice1642026-01-08 00:16

Zenshu

Kiyo_is_my_Hime2026-01-08 01:19

Watch Otaku no Video. It's a classic.

Animesiac2026-01-08 01:30

a few unmentioned:

* **A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace** - this was just last season. kinda shocked ~~nobody~~ only 1 person mentioned it yet
* **Kakushigoto**
* **A Galaxy Next Door**
* **A Comic Artist and His Assistants**
* **Denki-Gai** - core plot is about a book store, but 1 of the main characters is a mangaka
* **New Game** - similar concept but for a game studio instead
* **Remake Our Life!** - a different spin on making a video game also

rezignator2026-01-08 02:03

I'm surprised so few people mentioned "Keep your Hands Off Eizouken"

The anime is a love letter to the animation process and absolutely gorgeously animated.

It even won a few awards the year it came out including animation of the year in the Tokyo Anime Awards.

bravetailor2026-01-08 04:53

A lot of really good pandemic-era anime have become forgotten over the past 2 years, it seems. Eizouken was getting huge online buzz in 2020. Even Elvis Costello tweeted about how good it was.

NanaMiku2026-01-08 04:22

Shirobako. It's the best anime about anime.
One of the thing I like about it is that the series is about making anime series, while the movie is about making an anime movie

NyankoMata2026-01-08 08:11

Zenshu

Can't be more straightforward than that /hj

The anime integrates itself very well within the story though iirc it doesn't call out a lot, still worth watching! The story is beautiful

Ggezbby2026-01-08 09:48

Bakuman is about manga but has elements of anime industry iirc

notokawaiiyo2026-01-08 10:04

My recommendations for anime about
- Anime: Shirobako
- Manga: Bakuman.
- Voice acting: Sore ga Seiyuu!
- Game dev: New Game!

gvisii2026-01-08 11:38

bakuman - its more centred around creating manga tho as opposed to anime

CommentStrict89642026-01-09 07:28

What about Eroge! H mo Game mo Kaihatsu Zanmai? Obviously NSFW.

Jokes aside, one other example I can think of is Zatsu Tabi. The protagonist is a mangaka. The show isn't really about manga, but her profession is constantly mentioned through the show.

EnyaCa2026-01-09 18:25

Zenshu?
