Welcome to the I My Me! Strawberry Eggs 25th anniversary rewatch!
^Just ^ignore ^the ^25th ^anniversary ^is ^in ^July…
Crossdressing and comedy. It has a long, storied history.
Nowadays, crossdressing in comedy is considered insensitive with accusations of it being transphobic and borderline homophobic. And while there is probably some truth to that, the reality is a lot of times it’s played with sincerity.
Some Like It Hot and Tootsie are two of the greatest comedies of all time. Mrs. Doubtfire is considered iconic and a defining part of Robin Williams legacy. All three movies play the crossdressing up for laughs but there’s quite sincerity about it to where the joke isn’t just “Lol, it’s a guy dressed as a woman”. And I think that sincerity applies to I My Me! Strawberry Eggs.
Strawberry Eggs, which is how I’ll be referring to it going forward, is very much a product of its time. It has that wacky slapstick type of humor common in anime at the time, like with shows such as Ranma and Love Hina. It also has a lot of heart that I think makes it a show worth revisiting.
This is easily the most obscure show I’ve ever hosted. I hope with this rewatch I can introduce people to this series that have never seen it before so they can become fans of it just like me. It’s been over two years since I last saw the show, so will my memory hold up or will it prove to be an outdated relic best forgotten to time? Let’s find out!
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
It's tough getting people excited for a rewatch when you're the only one who wants to rewatch it.
A nice, sunny day
Car vrooming
Fuko, Fujio, Miho, and Seiko walking with each other-o.
A guy pulls next to them
Here to visit the school
Miho seems to think he's cute
Miho, you already have a boyfriend
"That's different."
Is it?
Fujio seems to think he's here for Hibiki, much to Fuko's dismay.
"A woman with a personality like hers doesn't really attract a lot of men in the first place."
Damn, Miho. What's with the shade on Hibiki?
I like Hibiki intensely staring at her lol
Fuko helping Miho with her punishment.
Suddenly, they be eavesdropping
Oh, so the director is the boy's uncle.
And he's trying to marry his nephew with Hibiki.
Hibiki seemingly agrees, like he's being blackmail by the vice principal or something.
I'm kinda confused, what dirty laundry does the vice principal have over Hibiki?
Fuko and Miho trying to downplay the news.
Miho is far more animated than Fuko is being.
Hibiki trying to get Lulu to bail him out of this.
Unfortunately, she's unwilling to do so.
That is a creepily good disguise, Tofu.
Akira with Fuko
Fuko feels if Hibiki gets married, they might leave the school.
"I couldn't care less."
Very blunt, Akira
That girl looks cute
Hibiki looks very defeated
At least Fuko being around cheers her up.
Fuko however is pretty bad at the ball tossing.
Fuko and company walking together.
Miho still being animated
Even the guys are here. All three of them.
And the nephew drives past them.
They are now following him around.
It looks like we're starting to ship the teens together. I like that Fujio is sitting right next to Akira as he sits across from Fuko. That's some subtle storytelling.
Hibiki at his apartment
He seems to have an idea. I think.
That, or maybe he's excited to wear a dress.
Akira and Fujio on the move
They are all sitting next to each other in a car.
Oh shit. Did Hibiki get hit?
Nope, just a false alarm
The students see the nephew with the bra man.
Now they're suspecting they're gay.
"So, you're telling me the director's nephew is a fruitcake?"
Damn, show XD
Fuko feels that the nephew is cheating on Hibiki.
Yes, I hate when my boyfriend cheats on me with me.
Hibiki in regular attire greets the students, but they of course has reservations due to seeing him as a pervert.
Kōji and Tofu on one of those window washer lifts.
They're trying to get Hibiki to forget about marrying the guy.
Director with the nephew, the vice principal, Hibiki, and the principal.
We learn via flashback that the nephew is actually in love with someone else. Unfortunately, he has to do what is told of him by his uncle.
Hibiki tells him to follow his heart.
Oh boy. Vice principal took the voice modifier off Hibiki [](#forgotkeys)
Miho and Fujio spying on them
All the main teenagers reserved the room next door with Seiko's help.
"My father is a stockholder."
What does that have to do with anything?
That's a lot of food
Miho trying to slide a letter between the doors.
But suddenly, Seiko passes out
Right, muscular men terrify her
I like that they're just running with the misinformation that the director's nephew is gay lol
Hibiki still not saying anything
Hibiki staring at the nephew
And he's trying to spill the beans
But before that can happen, all the students come bursting through the door.
Hibiki putting the voice modifier on in all the confusion.
Kōji and Tofu window washing
But of course, they're at the wrong location.
Nephew left a letter saying he finally proposed to Ami.
Boy, Ami is kinda... nevermind...
Hibiki with all the students
Fuko reluctantly admits this was all her idea.
And to think you knew someone...
Overall, another solid episode. It was more a way to show the relationships between the students and Hibiki, in particular how much Fuko doesn't want to lose Hibiki. It's not really explained why the director was so insistent on his nephew marrying Hibiki. I guess maybe he was trying to stick it to the principal, but if so it was too subtle to make out. Either way, I like the nephew sticking up for himself and being assertive of his feelings. It serves as a nice contrast to the students and their inability to be forthcoming in their own feelings.
This like the last episode was middle of the road. Probably a bottom three episode, but that's not to say this was a bad episode.
I'm surprised it was so soon. If he was going to come back, I thought it would be episode 10 or episode 11.
>What are your thoughts on this episode being about an arranged marriage?
Makes me think of that Love Hina episode with Kaolla.
>What are your thoughts on the message of the episode which is you shouldn't let others decide who you love?
I like that it continues the trend of staying true to yourself which is something Hibiki obviously can't do.
Hey, I'm enjoying it! But yeah, it's not an easy sell. I decided to watch it because I wanted to be part of a rewatch, not because the actual show. I would've never thought to pick this up otherwise.
>"My father is a stockholder."
>What does that have to do with anything?
Lol I was wondering the same.
>Overall, another solid episode. It was more a way to show the relationships between the students and Hibiki, in particular how much Fuko doesn't want to lose Hibiki. Maybe the director really liked Hibiki. Unless he really dislikes his nephew, I don't think it would have anything to do with the principal... The director really doesn't seem that bad of a guy. But maybe I'm wrong, who knows.
>This like the last episode was middle of the road. Probably a bottom three episode, but that's not to say this was a bad episode.
Yeah, it was alright. Definitely more enjoyable than yesterday's episode though!
The thing that really works against it is that it's not easily accessible. Like, there's no legal way of streaming it.
>Lol I was wondering the same.
Oh, so was that in the sub version as well? Very odd.
>Maybe the director really liked Hibiki. Unless he really dislikes his nephew, I don't think it would have anything to do with the principal... The director really doesn't seem that bad of a guy. But maybe I'm wrong, who knows.
The director did mention how he liked Hibiki at the end of episode 4. I think he really was doing his nephew a solid.
It's also pretty presumptuous to just assume Hibiki isn't already in a relationship lol
But yeah, I like the director. He's like sexist as well but at least he has like a sense of humor.
>Yeah, it was alright. Definitely more enjoyable than yesterday's episode though!
You know, I say bottom 3, but I do like it more than episode 5 and episode 6. Substance wise, this is probably the best episode since episode 4.
Well, I should say I think the message from episode 5 is better than episodes 6 and 7. I thought that really delivered in terms of execution. This however was a lot of fun.
Probably. I always sail the high seas though.
>Oh, so was that in the sub version as well? Very odd.
I have a feeling they have the exact same script. Either the dub used the subs for the script, or the subs I'm using are for the English version.
>The director did mention how he liked Hibiki at the end of episode 4. I think he really was doing his nephew a solid.
Yeah I think that's it.
>It's also pretty presumptuous to just assume Hibiki isn't already in a relationship lol
It's true though.
>But yeah, I like the director. He's like sexist as well but at least he has like a sense of humor.
Not that exist, given who he associates with.
>You know, I say bottom 3, but I do like it more than episode 5 and episode 6. Substance wise, this is probably the best episode since episode 4.
I don't like ranking things, all I know is I liked it a lot more than episode 6.
>Well, I should say I think the message from episode 5 is better than episodes 6 and 7. I thought that really delivered in terms of execution. This however was a lot of fun.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about what message the writers are trying to send, just trying to have a fun time!
Argh, matey!
>I have a feeling they have the exact same script. Either the dub used the subs for the script, or the subs I'm using are for the English version.
Did the subs give a random background character an Italian accent like in the last episode? Lol
>Yeah I think that's it.
I think that's kinda wholesome
>It's true though.
Well, yeah :P
>Not that exist, given who he associates with.
What do you mean?
>I don't like ranking things, all I know is I liked it a lot more than episode 6.
Oh, my whole thing is ranking shit lol
>Yeah, I'm not too worried about what message the writers are trying to send, just trying to have a fun time!
It is kinda cool each episode has a life lesson. Again, it's like something out of 1980s sitcoms.
They did not but they kept things like Kyoshi, fruitcake... There were a few other things I forgot.
>I think that's kinda wholesome
Yeah, unless he just wanted the hot teacher in his family lol
>What do you mean?
Autocorrect... I meant sexist. He's not that sexist, considering he associates himself with the 2 most sexist characters in the show!
>Oh, my whole thing is ranking shit lol
My whole thing is not ranking shit! 1000 watched anime on Anilist and I haven't scored a single one of them!
>It is kinda cool each episode has a life lesson. Again, it's like something out of 1980s sitcoms.
It is yeah, but that's not what I'm here for :P
I was surprised when I heard Miho say that. What has her modeling buddies be teaching her?
>Yeah, unless he just wanted the hot teacher in his family lol
I mean, at least he's thinking of other people.
>Autocorrect... I meant sexist. He's not that sexist, considering he associates himself with the 2 most sexist characters in the show!
But he's still pretty sexist, especially compared to everyone else.
The only guy who might be giving him a run for his money is Akira.
>My whole thing is not ranking shit! 1000 watched anime on Anilist and I haven't scored a single one of them!
I have both a top 25 favorite anime of all time list and a top 25 anime episodes of all time list.
>It is yeah, but that's not what I'm here for :P
Added bonus, you can say
Not being a native English speaker, this isn't a term I've heard a lot, even back in the wild west times of the internet people generally used way more offensive terms, so I just straight up laughed when she said it lol. This really is an early 2000s anime.
>But he's still pretty sexist, especially compared to everyone else.
>The only guy who might be giving him a run for his money is Akira.
I was mostly thinking about the school staff, not the students.
>I have both a top 25 favorite anime of all time list and a top 25 anime episodes of all time list.
A top 25 anime should be somewhat doable, of course I'd change my mind every other day, but it would probably be somewhat consistent. Top 25 episodes, though? Gun to my head, I'd just give up and die.
I laughed too, I have to say. It through me for a loop.
Miho was pretty wild this episode.
>I was mostly thinking about the school staff, not the students.
Well, we don't know if the rest of the school staff is sexist or not.
>A top 25 anime should be somewhat doable, of course I'd change my mind every other day, but it would probably be somewhat consistent. Top 25 episodes, though? Gun to my head, I'd just give up and die.
I feel like most people would :P
The most obscure show I have as one of my top anime episodes of all time is A Centaur's Life. The show itself is whatever, but there's one episode that is phenomenal.
They're all part of the cult, I'm making an educated guess.
>I feel like most people would :P
>The most obscure show I have as one of my top anime episodes of all time is A Centaur's Life. The show itself is whatever, but there's one episode that is phenomenal.
I've never even heard of that show, so it's definitely obscure. But then again, my eyes automatically skip over monster girls.
>What are your thoughts on the director returning?
I guess Hibiki really did leave a good impression on him, he wanted him to be part of his family!
>What are your thoughts on this episode being about an arranged marriage?
Some new drama! I liked it. I saw the "twist" coming from a mile away though.
>What are your thoughts on the message of the episode which is you shouldn't let others decide who you love?
It's 2026, I didn't really need the message, but it's alright.
On to the episode!
Were they talking about aliens?
Is Fuko gonna fall for the new guy? Nope, just Miho lol Maybe she really doesn't have a boyfriend.
Oh no. The new guy is the director's nephew, and he's setting him up with Hibiki!
Fuko really doesn't want Hibiki to get a boyfriend.
It appears Granny will be of no help today.
Screw Akira.
Fuko nearly killed herself throwing that ball.
I'm guessing the nephew already has a girlfriend and is also not up to going out with Hibiki.
That's tomato juice isn't it? Yup lol.
Lol the kids think he's a fruitcake.
Called it. Dude already has someone.
Oh heeeell naw! She took off his necklace!
Dumb kids saved the day lol
Emi's a looker.
Overall an enjoyable episode. Not one of the best, but definitely better than the previous one, at least I didn't have any bad feelings about it.
>I guess Hibiki really did leave a good impression on him, he wanted him to be part of his family!
I can imagine vice principal having a stroke as we speak :P
>Some new drama! I liked it. I saw the "twist" coming from a mile away though.
I thought it was cool that Ami looked the way she did. Like, objectively speaking, Hibiki looks way better, but the nephew didn't care about that. He loved Ami for who she was.
That's also ironic because Hibiki has to hide who he is.
>It's 2026, I didn't really need the message, but it's alright.
It's a message that definitely stands the test of time.
>On to the episode!
[](#ilovethiskindashit)
>Were they talking about aliens?
Were they? I wasn't paying attention.
>Is Fuko gonna fall for the new guy? Nope, just Miho lol Maybe she really doesn't have a boyfriend.
Or maybe she does [](#yuishrug)
>Oh no. The new guy is the director's nephew, and he's setting him up with Hibiki!
[](#forgotkeys)
>Fuko really doesn't want Hibiki to get a boyfriend.
And Miho seems really animated about people being married.
I get the feeling these characters are hiding something...
Wait, Hibiki is also hiding something [](#flyingbunsofdoom)
>It appears Granny will be of no help today.
I guess since the issue doesn't pretain to money it's of no concern to her.
>Screw Akira.
Okay, so Akira clearly has women issues, right? He only treats Fuko nicely. But why?
Just like Miho, it seems like he's hiding something. Which again, is like a parallel to Hibiki's situation.
>Fuko nearly killed herself throwing that ball.
Poor Fuko :c
>I'm guessing the nephew already has a girlfriend and is also not up to going out with Hibiki.
You would be right
>That's tomato juice isn't it? Yup lol.
A classic
>Lol the kids think he's a fruitcake.
I like how they run with the idea that Hibiki is being cheated on. Kids jumping to conclusions.
>Called it. Dude already has someone.
And she's... yeah...
>Oh heeeell naw! She took off his necklace!
That was honestly pretty quick thinking by the vice principal.
>Dumb kids saved the day lol
I do like that the kids all worked together for a change. This episode in a weird way endeared them to me a little bit more.
I assume you feel different lol
>Emi's a looker.
Is she?
>Overall an enjoyable episode. Not one of the best, but definitely better than the previous one, at least I didn't have any bad feelings about it.
It was a clever way to bring the director back into the fold while furthering some of the characters, like Miho's maybe or maybe not boyfriend and Fuko's feelings for Hibiki that he remains unaware of.
Really low bar we're setting, the woman he was already in love with against a hot stranger. I think the majority of people would go with the ugly duckling. Looks go a long way, but they're way more important before you actually get to meet the person.
>It's a message that definitely stands the test of time.
Maybe in India... I've never even heard of anyone being set up by their family!
>Were they? I wasn't paying attention.
I forgot what it was about (shocker), but I believe they were asking each other whether "they" existed. Unless I missed something, they didn't specify what "they" were, so I assumed aliens.
>Or maybe she does
A mystery, is what it is!
>Wait, Hibiki is also hiding something
Something very small, apparently.
>Okay, so Akira clearly has women issues, right? He only treats Fuko nicely. But why?
>Just like Miho, it seems like he's hiding something. Which again, is like a parallel to Hibiki's situation.
Man, I really don't care about what they're hiding! Akira because I dislike him. Miho because... No particular reason. Just don't particularly care lol.
>I like how they run with the idea that Hibiki is being cheated on. Kids jumping to conclusions.
Especially because they weren't even dating! And the kids knew that... Was kinda weird, but we'll roll with it!
>That was honestly pretty quick thinking by the vice principal.
Was it? There's no way she could know the necklace is a voice changer... It has to have been pure luck, because nothing else makes sense.
>I do like that the kids all worked together for a change. This episode in a weird way endeared them to me a little bit more.
>I assume you feel different lol
I just thought "dumb kids doing dumb things", I did think it was fun though!
>Is she?
The beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or what counts is what you have inside, or something...
>It was a clever way to bring the director back into the fold while furthering some of the characters, like Miho's maybe or maybe not boyfriend and Fuko's feelings for Hibiki that he remains unaware of.
I don't think Fuko herself realizes she has feelings for Hibiki!
I think most people who are going on blind dates or are on the dating scene are more likely to date someone based off of looks.
>Maybe in India... I've never even heard of anyone being set up by their family!
I meant the message of standing up for yourself.
I know, I know. You're joking.
>I forgot what it was about (shocker), but I believe they were asking each other whether "they" existed. Unless I missed something, they didn't specify what "they" were, so I assumed aliens.
That makes me think of Haruhi. I'm currently watching that show, and the main girl really wants to see an alien.
It also reminds me of Minori from Toradora wanting to see a UFO. And Okurun from Dandadan wanting to see an alien.
Boy, anime characters really want to see extraterrestrials.
>A mystery, is what it is!
That's the case for a lot of characters
>Something very small, apparently.
I'm scared to ask what you mean
>Man, I really don't care about what they're hiding! Akira because I dislike him. Miho because... No particular reason. Just don't particularly care lol.
I care but that's because I like the characters more than you.
>Especially because they weren't even dating! And the kids knew that... Was kinda weird, but we'll roll with it!
And also the absurdity of Hibiki being cheated on and the side piece being Hibiki.
>Was it? There's no way she could know the necklace is a voice changer... It has to have been pure luck, because nothing else makes sense.
I think she knew because she seemed smug of herself afterwards. She may not have known it was a voice modifier, but she knew it did something.
>I just thought "dumb kids doing dumb things", I did think it was fun though!
Akira it should be pointed out did tag along despite not caring about Hibiki. And given this was Fuko's idea, I thought it was some subtle foreshadowing.
I also thought the show finally did something with Seiko, even though if it was to accidentally sabotage everyone by revealing their location.
I don't know why, but the whole thing gave me like Scooby-Doo vibes.
>The beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Or what counts is what you have inside, or something...
And clearly her husband loves her the way she is <3
>I don't think Fuko herself realizes she has feelings for Hibiki!
Yeah, you're probably right. Fuko as early as the first episode knew she had like feelings, but I don't think she's stopped to think what these feelings may entail.
This is also the first episode since episode 4 that really tied into the dynamic between Fuko and Hibiki. Episode 5 was more about Hibiki’s relationship with all the girls, and episode 6 was more about the students. There was some subtle development in the previous two episodes between Hibiki and Fuko with Hibiki talking about how big Fuko's heart is in episode 5 and Hibiki not interrogating Fuko in episode 6, but I would say it wasn't as big of a point of emphasis as it is here. Perhaps this is part of why I liked this episode more than the last two because I find Hibiki and Fuko’s relationship arguably the most compelling thing about the show.
Actually, there's an interesting continuation from the last episode to this one. The last episode had Hibiki feeling that Fuko is not capable of underhanded tactics. And here, the plan to break up Hibiki and the director nephew's marriage was Fuko's idea.
Right, because they don't know anything about the other person until they meet them. I'd pick the hot chick 10 out of 10 times if I knew nothing about the other one. But in this scenario, he was already dating Emi. Why would he leave her for someone else?
>I know, I know. You're joking.
You're learning!
>That makes me think of Haruhi. I'm currently watching that show, and the main girl really wants to see an alien.
I've watched it, even the spin-off!
>It also reminds me of Minori from Toradora wanting to see a UFO. And Okurun from Dandadan wanting to see an alien.
I have absolutely no clue who Minori is lmao, I only remember the 2 main characters from Toradora!
>Boy, anime characters really want to see extraterrestrials.
Don't we all?
>I'm scared to ask what you mean
You know exactly what I meant.
>I care but that's because I like the characters more than you.
I think it's also more than that, you really like to analyze every little detail about what you're watching it. I just watch things to have fun. Maybe that's why I always forget things, I don't think too much about them, just having a good time. That's why sometimes you ask "thoughts on X?" And I'm literally thinking to myself "I dunno", I legitimately didn't think about it, I'm just watching! Not that I mind you asking the questions, because you're actually forcing me to think a little. Reminds me of literature back in highschool, teachers always ask "what did you think the author meant there?" Fuck if I know what that crazy son of a bitch meant!
(Speaking of which, still gotta reply to your other comment, but time is short today, work's been busy.)
>I think she knew because she seemed smug of herself afterwards. She may not have known it was a voice modifier, but she knew it did something.
Still doesn't make sense that she knows or suspects it! Voice changers like that are not a thing, especially not in the early 2000s!
>I don't know why, but the whole thing gave me like Scooby-Doo vibes.
Was never much of a Scooby-Doo fan, I think it's one of those cartoons that probably isn't as fun if you don't understand the language (we didn't dubs nor subs on Cartoon Network back when I was a kid).
>Yeah, you're probably right. Fuko as early as the first episode knew she had like feelings, but I don't think she's stopped to think what these feelings may entail.
I don't think she's lesbian, so she's probably quite confused.
>This is also the first episode since episode 4 that really tied into the dynamic between Fuko and Hibiki. Yeah, see what I mean? What you're saying makes sense and was (hopefully) intentional, I really hadn't thought about those small details.
No, you're right. What I'm saying is in certain circumstances some people do date because of looks.
>You're learning!
And knowing is half the battle :D
>I've watched it, even the spin-off!
I hope to watch the spinoff someday. That's about Yuki I believe.
>I have absolutely no clue who Minori is lmao, I only remember the 2 main characters from Toradora!
Fair enough. I think you'd remember her if you saw her.
>Don't we all?
I suppose. I'd be worried getting probed [](#ptsd)
>You know exactly what I meant.
[](#spooked)
>I think it's also more than that, you really like to analyze every little detail about what you're watching it. I just watch things to have fun. Reminds me of literature back in highschool, teachers always ask "what did you think the author meant there?" Fuck if I know what that crazy son of a bitch meant!
But I also think that the questions serve to cover stuff you didn't in your notes. I like hearing people's takes on certain stuff.
Anyway, it really does feel like these characters don't want their friends to know them as well as they could.
>(Speaking of which, still gotta reply to your other comment, but time is short today, work's been busy.)
Sounds good. Take your time, buddy.
>Still doesn't make sense that she knows or suspects it! Voice changers like that are not a thing, especially not in the early 2000s!
I assume after finding Hibiki's voice change in episode 5 that she was able to put two and two together. That the thing around Hibiki's neck was doing something.
Didn't she see him have it off?
>Was never much of a Scooby-Doo fan, I think it's one of those cartoons that probably isn't as fun if you don't understand the language (we didn't dubs nor subs on Cartoon Network back when I was a kid).
I liked it because of the critical thinking it caused me to have as a kid. It made me wonder who happened to be the ghost.
>I don't think she's lesbian, so she's probably quite confused.
Yeah, Hibiki being a woman to her knowledge is definitely part of the confusion.
>Yeah, see what I mean? What you're saying makes sense and was (hopefully) intentional, I really hadn't thought about those small details.
Well, that's why I'm here to help :D
I really like to analyze things in a way that makes sense in my head because it gives me a better appreciation of the show.
Of course. It's the same with food, or anything in life, really. You go for what's visually pleasing, unless you have prior experience with it. If you have 2 chocolates, one of them looks like shit but tastes amazing, the other one looks amazing, but tastes like shit. If you've never had either before, you're going for the shit tasting chocolate. We know we shouldn't, but we always judge a book by its cover.
>I hope to watch the spinoff someday. That's about Yuki I believe.
Yes it is. It felt very different, though. Even visually.
>Fair enough. I think you'd remember her if you saw her.
Looked her up, yeah I remember her, visually. Not a clue who she is or what she did though...
>But I also think that the questions serve to cover stuff you didn't in your notes. I like hearing people's takes on certain stuff.
Yeah, fair enough!
>I assume after finding Hibiki's voice change in episode 5 that she was able to put two and two together. That the thing around Hibiki's neck was doing something.
>Didn't she see him have it off?
Nope, she was inside the bathroom stall, he was by the window. So she heard a male voice and assumed (correctly) it was him, but she has no proof, and she never saw him without the necklace.
>I liked it because of the critical thinking it caused me to have as a kid. It made me wonder who happened to be the ghost.
Yeah, barely speaking a word of English made it very hard to figure anything out :P
>Well, that's why I'm here to help :D
>I really like to analyze things in a way that makes sense in my head because it gives me a better appreciation of the show.
I always wonder though. How much of what you (or anyone else) think is an actual reflection of what the author is thinking? I also like to guess things, mostly when there's a mystery to be solved (like in Mushoku Tensei, if you've watched it, but I assume you haven't), but otherwise I just let things take their course instead of making things up!
It's human nature. One of the inherent flaws of society.
>Yes it is. It felt very different, though. Even visually.
I'm four episodes in Haruhi and I'm really enjoying it so far.
>Looked her up, yeah I remember her, visually. Not a clue who she is or what she did though...
She's actually similar to Fuko except not in personality.
>Yeah, fair enough!
It makes for a good ice breaker, if you will.
>Nope, she was inside the bathroom stall, he was by the window. So she heard a male voice and assumed (correctly) it was him, but she has no proof, and she never saw him without the necklace.
I think we're underestimating how smart the vice principal is. She's very cunning and crafty, it seems.
>Yeah, barely speaking a word of English made it very hard to figure anything out :P
I'm surprised they didn't dub it in your language given how universal the show is.
>I always wonder though. How much of what you (or anyone else) think is an actual reflection of what the author is thinking? I haven't seen Mushoku Tensei, but I'm tempted to because of Eris.
I think some of the things I analyze is definitely intentional. For instance, I truly believe even though the show didn't say it outright that the only reason Akira went along with the plan is because it was Fuko's idea. If it was anybody else's, he'd probably be above it all. I say this because he walked away from his friends being creeps in episode 5. He's not above disapproving his friends actions and removing himself from the situation.
It was very fun from what I remember. Are you watching the "Endless Eight"? If so... Good luck!
> She's actually similar to Fuko except not in personality.
Is she? I don't see it.
> I think we're underestimating how smart the vice principal is. She's very cunning and crafty, it seems.
Nah, I refuse to believe lol.
> I'm surprised they didn't dub it in your language given how universal the show is.
They might have done that since, but I was watching it back in the 90s. The Cartoon Network we now have is a Portuguese version, back then it was an European wide version, so it aired in the original English language without dubbing or subbing anything.
>I haven't seen Mushoku Tensei, but I'm tempted to because of Eris.
Of all the reasons... Highly recommend it though, I read the entirety of the LN and the adaption is top notch.
>I think some of the things I analyze is definitely intentional. Correctiom, he didn't walk away from his friends for being creeps, he was one of the creeps. He only walked away when it got to Fuko's then, so he's a hypocrite.
I am going to be watching it. I'm actually looking forward to it.
>Is she? I don't see it.
You will, I feel. Or maybe you won't.
>Nah, I refuse to believe lol.
Hey, just because I don't like her doesn't mean I can't give the devil her due.
>They might have done that since, but I was watching it back in the 90s. The Cartoon Network we now have is a Portuguese version, back then it was an European wide version, so it aired in the original English language without dubbing or subbing anything.
Interesting. I didn't know that.
Was Top Cat big where you lived growing up? I know it was very popular in like foreign countries.
>Of all the reasons...
I may have a bias :P
>Highly recommend it though, I read the entirety of the LN and the adaption is top notch.
So I've heard
>Correctiom, he didn't walk away from his friends for being creeps, he was one of the creeps. He only walked away when it got to Fuko's then, so he's a hypocrite.
You're probably right.
Akira is actually more similar to the principal than he or her may want admit. They both act like they have this moral high ground of sorts.

Either you're right, and she really doesn't have a boyfriend, or she's a bit of a slut!
>Thoughts on Miho saying of Hibiki that a woman with a personality like hers doesn't really attract a lot of men in the first place?
Maybe she's jealous, who knows!
>What are your thoughts on the director wanting his nephew to marry Hibiki?
I'd just be curious to see his reaction once he finds out the truth lol.
>Thoughts on Lulu being unwilling to help Hibiki out?
About time Hibiki deals with things on his own!
>Thoughts on Akira saying he doesn't care if Hibiki leaves the school?
Of course he doesn't, he's a little shit!
>Thoughts on the students all hanging out together to spy on the director's nephew?
Was pretty fun, I love me a good stakeout!
>Thoughts on even though Hibiki doesn't want to get married, he is kinda looking forward to wearing a dress?
First the bra, now a dress... Really raising up some questions.
>What are your thoughts on the students thinking the director's nephew is gay because he's hanging out with bra man?
I think they're both fruitcakes. Actually made me laugh out loud, it was pretty funny!
>What are your thoughts on the director's nephew telling Hibiki he is in love with someone else, with Hibiki telling him to follow his heart?
Hibiki is a real bro. Totally not trying to save his own ass!
>Thoughts on the students all staying next door at the dinner party due to Seiko's family pulling some strings?
Did you know her father is a stockholder?
>What are your thoughts on the students accidentally revealing that they were next door?
>What are your thoughts on in the midst of all the confusion, Hibiki puts the voice modifier back on?
Had to happen in order to save Hibiki's ass lol.
>Thoughts on Kōji and Tofu windows washing but they're at the wrong location? It seems like they were trying to help Hibiki.
I'm starting to feel bad for them, been a while since they got to do something!
>What are your thoughts on the director's nephew standing up for himself and finally being allowed to marry the love of his life?
Good for the guy!
What are your thoughts on Fuko admitting that the plan to thwart Hibiki’s marriage with the director's nephew was her idea?
I'm just waiting for her to realize she's in love with a "woman".
I can't tell you how happy that makes me :)
>Either you're right, and she really doesn't have a boyfriend, or she's a bit of a slut!
Why not both? [](#yuishrug)
I kinda feel like Miho sees herself as being like the leader of the group and so she wants to like come off as the mature one.
>Maybe she's jealous, who knows!
I kinda get that vibe as well
>I'd just be curious to see his reaction once he finds out the truth lol.
He probably won't be around for that, unfortunately.
>About time Hibiki deals with things on his own!
Damn straight
>Of course he doesn't, he's a little shit!
I wonder if it may be because he sees Fuko cares about Hibiki and he got jealous.
>Was pretty fun, I love me a good stakeout!
Same here
>First the bra, now a dress... Really raising up some questions.
I think he should feel no shame for his interests. As he himself said, the heart wants what it wants.
>I think they're both fruitcakes. Actually made me laugh out loud, it was pretty funny!
I disagree with others saying the teenagers were being homophobic. They aren't actively hating them being gay. They were more so saying it was disgusting that the director's nephew would cheat on Hibiki with bra man.
>Hibiki is a real bro. Totally not trying to save his own ass!
And again, the irony is he's bashful over liking feminine stuff.
>Did you know her father is a stockholder?
No, I didn't, actually
>Had to happen in order to save Hibiki's ass lol.
Not going to wrap things up just yet
>I'm starting to feel bad for them, been a while since they got to do something!
Their characters clearly exist to be comic relief and bring levity to the episodes.
>Good for the guy!
I like him standing up for himself.
Maybe Hibiki should do that as well...
>I'm just waiting for her to realize she's in love with a "woman".
It feels inevitable, honestly
[](#brofist)
>I kinda feel like Miho sees herself as being like the leader of the group and so she wants to like come off as the mature one.
She did say something similar, so yeah :P
>I wonder if it may be because he sees Fuko cares about Hibiki and he got jealous.
Yeah, it did feel like it, wasn't there a scene on the first episode that he looked a bit jealous? Talk about being insecure. I mean, turns out there's probably a reason to be jealous, but he shouldn't know that!
>I think he should feel no shame for his interests. As he himself said, the heart wants what it wants.
Maybe not as much in 2026, but this was 25 years ago, I'm sure there would've been a lot of shame and judgement back then.
>I disagree with others saying the teenagers were being homophobic. They aren't actively hating them being gay. They were more so saying it was disgusting that the director's nephew would cheat on Hibiki with bra man.
Things were different back then. I can tell you I'm not homophobic nor ever was homophobic in the sense that I had any form of disdain towards gay people, but things were very different 20+ years ago and slurs were very often used in a jokingly matter. I can see how they probably made certain people feel bad, but... It's just how things were.
>It feels inevitable, honestly
Hope they don't leave it to the last episode.
[](#fistbump)
>She did say something similar, so yeah :P
Miho is an interesting character because you don't know what's real and what isn't. She reminds me of Ami from Toradora a bit.
>Yeah, it did feel like it, wasn't there a scene on the first episode that he looked a bit jealous? Talk about being insecure. I mean, turns out there's probably a reason to be jealous, but he shouldn't know that!
It feels like these teens almost don't know you can look up and like more than one person.
>Maybe not as much in 2026, but this was 25 years ago, I'm sure there would've been a lot of shame and judgement back then.
Oh, for sure. That doesn't mean it was right.
But do you feel the teenagers here were being homophobic? I know Miho called the situation disgusting, but if the director's nephew wasn't already in a relationship I don't think they would've cared.
>Hope they don't leave it to the last episode.
I mean, I would be surprised. I know Fuko’s feelings for Hibiki has been kinda deemphasized the last couple episodes, but I feel that's to let the show breathe a bit.
Man, you can't compare things with Toradora, who's Ami?! How can you keep track of so many minor characters across so many different anime?!
>It feels like these teens almost don't know you can look up and like more than one person.
Eeeeh... I don't know if you can truly like more than one person in the romantic sense. At that point, it's more that you're attracted rather than really liking someone, at least that's how I feel.
>Oh, for sure. That doesn't mean it was right.
Right, I just mean I wouldn't consider it homophobic for that reason, at least not in a conscious way.
>But do you feel the teenagers here were being homophobic? I know Miho called the situation disgusting, but if the director's nephew wasn't already in a relationship I don't think they would've cared.
I think it was more to do with the "cheating" than him being a "fruitcake".
Ami is arguably the most important character in Toradora besides like Taiga's dad. I would not classify her as a minor character.
>Eeeeh... I don't know if you can truly like more than one person in the romantic sense. At that point, it's more that you're attracted rather than really liking someone, at least that's how I feel.
You can perhaps be conflicted on how you feel. Like you like two people equally and you can't decide on who you like more.
I wasn't even thinking of a dating sense when I said like more than one person. I more so meant platonically.
>Right, I just mean I wouldn't consider it homophobic for that reason, at least not in a conscious way.
It sounds like you agree with me that the students weren't intentionally being homophobic.
>I think it was more to do with the "cheating" than him being a "fruitcake".
Yeah, I agree with you. And especially who he's "cheating" with. They hold bra man Hibiki in low regard.
By minor character I mean pretty much everyone that's not the main characters... Yes, my memory is that bad. Yes, I should probably see a doctor about that.
>You can perhaps be conflicted on how you feel. Like you like two people equally and you can't decide on who you like more.
>I wasn't even thinking of a dating sense when I said like more than one person. I more so meant platonically.
Those are very different things, most people do like more than one person platonically.
>It sounds like you agree with me that thr students weren't intentionally being homophobic.
Yup.
>Yeah, I agree with you. And especially who he's "cheating" with. They hold bra man Hibiki in low regard.
True, poor Hibiki lol.
I don't think your memory is bad. It's just Toradora left more of an impression on me than you.
>Those are very different things, most people do like more than one person platonically.
But what I'm saying is Akira mind be in this selfish mindset where he wants Fuko to only focus on him. We're saying similar things, but I don't think Akira thinks Fuko may have feelings for Hibiki.
It's honestly funny how he seemingly gets jealous over Fuko caring about other people and yet his decision making is based on what's going on around and with Fuko. It's very hypocritical.
>Yup.
Good to know.
Yeah, like I was saying, if the director's nephew wasn't fooling around with Hibiki, I don't think they would think much of it honestly.
>True, poor Hibiki lol.
Female Hibiki is held in highest regard by the students while male Hibiki is held in lowest regard by the students. At least it feels that way.
**First Timer, Dubbed**
I mean, you did call Hibiki not hot enough, sooooo
Ooooh the ikemen ***sucks***. Fuck this omiai.
>She looks so happy
*Hibiki looking depressed*
Are they gonna follow him?
**Yup.**
Hey, Hibiki, I have read mang manga with your predicament and they all have HEAs!
Holoooooooooooo
*Holooooooooooooooo*
I’m trying to give a pass because they’re children, but *whyyyyyyy*
Why not tell the VP the choker is special to you?
what’s the trope where someone is about to do the right thing and the deuteragonists misunderstand and intervene at the wrong time? I like that trope.
I love that he’s with an older and thicker woman. That’s adorable.

That homophobia from the kids really just blew the wind out of my sails 🫠
I know there’s been some parallels to queerphobia; I did ***not*** expect being gay to be called filthy and the kids looked so disturbed. I *know* this was quite prevalent back then in shows to go this route. We’ve greatly improved! It just makes me sad; I had to pause the episode for a while after that 😞
I’m glad the guy went off with his true love. I am not Japanese, but having friends in various cultures where matchmaking and arranged relationships and marriages are still A Thing™, I underestimated the amount of pressure that happens in their schisms of their cultures. It’s really is easy for me to just, like, block my bio parents and stay in my apartment. Those friends were already lacking autonomy and any sprint for independence is crippled when they accidentally tell their plans to a friend or a cousin who spills the beans.
I’m holding out for Hibiki to see Fuko’s feelings for him, but he rejects her politely and, instead, becomes a big bro or uncle of sorts. Is… Is that the case, or is this what I think it is? 🥲
Koji with his bullshit 😭 Since when would Hibiki or any woman seeing *you* clean windows would have them running for you mate, stop it ✋🏾😭

1. I see why the principal does not care for him.
2. Ack. Well, looking at shows with similar plot beats, it does seek inevitable.
3. I’m reaaaaally worried that this will go the age gap direction. But I will be pleasantly surprised if Hibiki decides to keep crossdressing fluidly and finds someone who appreciates and adores him for him. I know I would. A partner who plays around with gender and aesthetics is awesome 😎🪭

Good advice
>Holoooooooooooo
>*Holooooooooooooooo*
>I’m trying to give a pass because they’re children, but *whyyyyyyy*
I see it as less they have a problem with the nephew being gay and more they're mad he's cheating on Hibiki. That's how I see it.
>Why not tell the VP the choker is special to you?
Because then she may get ideas. She already suspects the worst of Hibiki.
>what’s the trope where someone is about to do the right thing and the deuteragonists misunderstand and intervene at the wrong time? I like that trope.
Idiot ball, isn't it? Or Three's Company plot. Something like that.
>I love that he’s with an older and thicker woman. That’s adorable.
He has his heart set on someone else. Bless that man.

>That homophobia from the kids really just blew the wind out of my sails 🫠
I mean, I'm not trying to defend it, but I think they were more worried of Hibiki's heart being broken.
>I know there’s been some parallels to queerphobia; I did ***not*** expect being gay to be called filthy and the kids looked so disturbed. At the very least, the kids are presented as being the ones in the wrong here.
>I’m glad the guy went off with his true love. Yeah, I really like the resolution of this episode. And again, Hibiki continues to prove why he is so outstanding and sweet and amazing.
>I’m holding out for Hibiki to see Fuko’s feelings for him, but he rejects her politely and, instead, becomes a big bro or uncle of sorts. Is… Is that the case, or is this what I think it is? 🥲
I think the real wild card is how Akira factors into things. He seems to like Fuko and yet he also seems to be kinda sexist towards women.
>Koji with his bullshit 😭 Since when would Hibiki or any woman seeing *you* clean windows would have them running for you mate, stop it ✋🏾😭
His head is definitely in the clouds.

Because he sticks his nose in other people's business?
>2. Ack. Well, looking at shows with similar plot beats, it does seek inevitable.
It's not a bad idea for an episode, honestly. And I do like that the director thinks enough of Hibiki that he's trying to make her a part of the family.
I would really love it if the anime ends with Hibiki revealing to the kids he's a man dressed as a woman and they embrace him for who he is.

Just got back from watching Marty Supreme. It reminded me I have not watched Ping Pong the Animation.
I don’t know who this guy with the car is but I immediately don’t trust him. I think I may just be subconsciously associating him with Akio Ohtori.
Miho’s terrible drawing here kind of reminds me of Yukko’s drawings in Nichijou.
So now this episode is about someone wanting Hibiki to get a husband.
Surprised it took us this long to have to deal with sexism in the workplace as a woman.
This show is making me want to watch Some Like It Hot again. That’s a great movie.
I’ll be honest, I am just now realizing I’m having an issue remembering who most of the male students we see are. I remember Fujio, Miho, and Seiko well enough but not these three guys they’re with this episode.
I should probably try to figure out who these guys are since now it seems like the show is positioning them as love interests for the girls.
Okay Hibiki getting hit by a car is probably the best joke of the show so far.
Now all the students think Hibiki and the other guy are gay and they’re being super homophobic about it. I mean it was the 2000s so I guess that makes sense but still, I’ve seen anime from around the same time and before that did better on the topic.
I guess the way the two halves of the plot come together is kinda fun.
I also think it’s funny that Hibiki has to find a way to deal with things without her choker.
Marty Supreme left me so conflicted. Like, it was good, but the characters are just so unlikable.
>I don’t know who this guy with the car is but I immediately don’t trust him. I think I may just be subconsciously associating him with Akio Ohtori.
The guy from Utena?
Thankfully, he's way nicer.
>Miho’s terrible drawing here kind of reminds me of Yukko’s drawings in Nichijou.
Fun comparison lol
>So now this episode is about someone wanting Hibiki to get a husband.
I mean, Hibiki IS marriage material.
>Surprised it took us this long to have to deal with sexism in the workplace as a woman.
We were too busy with sexism against the guys.
>This show is making me want to watch Some Like It Hot again. That’s a great movie.
I even reference it in my comments every thread :D
>I’ll be honest, I am just now realizing I’m having an issue remembering who most of the male students we see are. I remember Fujio, Miho, and Seiko well enough but not these three guys they’re with this episode.
I know who Akira is. The other two I struggle with.
>I should probably try to figure out who these guys are since now it seems like the show is positioning them as love interests for the girls.
Don't tell Miho’s boyfriend :P
I think it's clever there's four girls and three guys they're pairing off. And sure enough, the three that aren't being paired off are Akira, Fuko, and Fujio.
>Okay Hibiki getting hit by a car is probably the best joke of the show so far.
Yeah, that was very sudden in a good way.
>Now all the students think Hibiki and the other guy are gay and they’re being super homophobic about it. I mean it was the 2000s so I guess that makes sense but still, I’ve seen anime from around the same time and before that did better on the topic.
See, I didn't see it as homophobia. I thought they were mad Hibiki was being two timed. And by bra man of all people.
>I guess the way the two halves of the plot come together is kinda fun.
I thought so.
It was fun to see the students like work together.
>I also think it’s funny that Hibiki has to find a way to deal with things without her choker.
I don't know why he was about to speak before the students accidentally interrupted him. Was he going to wing it and put on a feminine voice?
Yeah objectively it was really good but I'm not sure I'd ever watch it again just cause of how stressful it was
>The guy from Utena?
Yep him, I think I was just associating it with him cause of his handsomeness and nice car
>I even reference it in my comments every thread :D
It's a great movie. Probably my favorite or second favorite Billy Wilder movie.
>I know who Akira is. The other two I struggle with.
Same. The other two feel interchangeable to me.
>Don't tell Miho’s boyfriend :P
I'm still not convinced that he's real.
>See, I didn't see it as homophobia. I thought they were made Hibiki was being two timed. And by bra man of all people.
I dunno, part of it seemed like they were disgusted but maybe I'm reading it wrong
>I don't know why he was about to speak before the students accidentally interrupted him. Was he going to wing it and put on a feminine voice?
It would have honestly been really funny if that happened
Definitely very stressful.
I watched a lot of movies this year and Timothée Chalamet probably gave the best performance by a leading male actor. I found his character to be detestable, but he really owned that role.
>Yep him, I think I was just associating it with him cause of his handsomeness and nice car
It was a nice car
>It's a great movie. Probably my favorite or second favorite Billy Wilder movie.
What would be the other one?
>Same. The other two feel interchangeable to me.
I feel like the tall one is more of a goofball.
>I'm still not convinced that he's real.
I'm not sure if Miho herself is even convinced he's real.
>I dunno, part of it seemed like they were disgusted but maybe I'm reading it wrong
Maybe the disgust was in the director's nephew hanging around bra man, you know? Like, the idea he would cheat on Hibiki sensei with the guy they know to be a creep.
>It would have honestly been really funny if that happened
Now I'm sad it didn't happen, honestly lol
The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. It's also my favorite Sherlock Holmes adaptation.
Thoughts on Miho being interested in the new guy even though she has a boyfriend?

Thoughts on even though Hibiki doesn't want to get married, he is kinda looking forward to wearing a dress?
What are your thoughts on the students thinking the director's nephew is gay because he's hanging out with bra man?
What are your thoughts on the director's nephew telling Hibiki he is in love with someone else, with Hibiki telling him to follow his heart?

What are your thoughts on the vice principal managing to take Hibiki’s voice modifier off at the dinner party?
Thoughts on Seiko passing out because muscular men terrify her?
What are your thoughts on the students accidentally revealing that they were next door?
What are your thoughts on in the midst of all the confusion, Hibiki puts the voice modifier back on?

What are your thoughts on the director's nephew standing up for himself and finally being allowed to marry the love of his life?
What are your thoughts on Fuko admitting that the plan to thwart Hibiki’s marriage with the director's nephew was her idea?
Again, still not sure if her model boyfriend is real
> Thoughts on Miho saying of Hibiki that a woman with a personality like hers doesn't really attract a lot of men in the first place?
The internet proves Miho very wrong.
> What are your thoughts on the director wanting his nephew to marry Hibiki?
Makes a good conflict for the episode
> Thoughts on Lulu being unwilling to help Hibiki out?
I guess her old lady magic can only go so far.
>Thoughts on Miho getting worked up about marriage?
She shouldn't worry about that. She's only 15
> Thoughts on Akira saying he doesn't care if Hibiki leaves the school?
I feel like he's lying
> Thoughts on the students all hanging out together to spy on the director's nephew?
Have they really got nothing better to do?
> Thoughts on even though Hibiki doesn't want to get married, he is kinda looking forward to wearing a dress?
I'm glad Hibiki has embraced their feminine side
> What are your thoughts on the students thinking the director's nephew is gay because he's hanging out with bra man?
I know you're more optimistic about it but it does feel like a bit of a homophobic product of its time
> What are your thoughts on the director's nephew telling Hibiki he is in love with someone else, with Hibiki telling him to follow his heart?
Seems sweet
> Thoughts on the students all staying next door at the dinner party due to Seiko's family pulling some strings?
Made a good comedic end to the episode
> What are your thoughts on the vice principal managing to take Hibiki’s voice modifier off at the dinner party?
I wonder if the VP suspected it was a voice changer or not.
> Thoughts on Seiko passing out because muscular men terrify her?
I think she just faints around half naked men in general
> What are your thoughts on the students accidentally revealing that they were next door?
Pretty funny
> Thoughts on Kōji and Tofu windows washing but they're at the wrong location? It seems like they were trying to help Hibiki.
Whatever. I'm just glad they weren't in the episode very much.
> What are your thoughts on the director's nephew standing up for himself and finally being allowed to marry the love of his life?
Good for him
Even she doesn't seem sure
>The internet proves Miho very wrong.
Eyy
>Makes a good conflict for the episode
I concur
>I guess her old lady magic can only go so far.
And also this doesn't concern money
>She shouldn't worry about that. She's only 15
No kidding
>I feel like he's lying
I dunno. It seems like he has women issues.
>Have they really got nothing better to do?
Nope lol
>I'm glad Hibiki has embraced their feminine side
It's quite endearing
>I know you're more optimistic about it but it does feel like a bit of a homophobic product of its time
It's hard for me to say that because the show has been so pro Hibiki as a woman.
>Seems sweet
I thought so
>Made a good comedic end to the episode
I agree
>I wonder if the VP suspected it was a voice changer or not.
I think she at least knows it does something.
>I think she just faints around half naked men in general
Which is funny because Miho is like dating a model who does this for a living. Maybe.
>Pretty funny
Yeah, this made me laugh
>Whatever. I'm just glad they weren't in the episode very much.
The show to its credit don't let them take up much screentime.
>Good for him
I thought this was extremely wholesome, especially the reveal that Ami doesn't look as pretty as Hibiki but the director's nephew loves her all the same.
