Looking for surreal and whimsical anime/movies that take place at night?

Hi! Im currently looking for anime or anime movies that have surreal dreamlike sequence that take place at night. My current favorite iteration of this is The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, and another example is the nighttime garden shenanigans in My Neighbor Totoro. Anything that really embodies nighttime being detached from the real world and being dreamy and whimsical. I'm really looking for something lighthearted or comforting that I can enjoy after a long day. Thank you!

Hi woooo1117, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

Call of the night

I hated it but that’s exactly what you’re looking for

No good options for night time specifically are coming to mind, but if you're willing to overlook that part and still be interested in varying-amounts-of-surreal worlds of whimsy...

* Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!
* Lu Over the Wall
* City The Animation

The first two have the same director as The Night is Short, Walk On Girl. Incidentally, The Night is Short is my favorite anime movie and that's my favorite director.

If you start to feel less whimsical but want to stay surreal, you could try that director's other works, anime by Studio SHAFT such as Madoka Magica and the Monogatari Series, or anime directed by Ikuhara such as Mawaru Penguindrum.

Not really night though I think parts are. Try Mushishi.

Light hearted and comforting maybe try Aria the Animation, Flying Witch, and Ame to Kimi to.

Call of the Night. It is *exactly* about the ''call'' of the night how it is basically a different world.

Though it isn't always light hearted.
