Anime for someone who dislikes most anime
Hi!
I'm quite new to anime and have largely disliked it most of my life. I decided to give it another try, though I'm stuck on finding something I actually like.
For point of reference, the animes I've seen and really liked so far are:
Cyberpunk: edgerunners (I consider this pretty much the best piece of media Ive ever seen)
Apothecary Diaries
Pretty much all movies by Studio Gibli
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Paprika
Castlevania
Castlevania: Nocturne
The Witcher: Nightmare of the wolf (don't know if this counts as anime)
Anime I've tried watching but didn't like:
Attack on Titan
My Hero Academia
One Piece
Terror In Resonance
(plus others I cannot recall)
I generally like the Manga/Anime drawing style, but when it comes to animation, I just cannot stand the animes that have over-expressive in your face character reactions or when the protagonist is constantly screaming some inner monologue about overcoming their fears and such. To me personally it comes off as if the creators of the anime don't trust me to understand the emotions of a scene and have to shove it all in my face, so to speak. It's also just very obnoxious and hard to watch for me.
Does anyone have any recommendations for series or anime-style movies I would like. It can be fantasy, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, historical. I'm pretty much open to anything, I just want to broaden my horizons and tap into a medium I wouldn't generally go and watch. Sadly, all my friends are seasoned anime watchers and usually recommend series I don't end up liking like most of the ones mentioned above.
Thanks in advance!

but if you are into like fighting/martial arts stories, Kengan Ahura is a good anime to watch, but still it has got those over-exaggerated scenes :D
It mentions that you didn't find Attack on Titan interesting right? It is one of the anime's that I have found to have less of those weird scenes to be honest. I think the story gets pretty interesting towards the end in that if you wanna give it another go.
Some of the anime that I watched recently,
\- Fate/Zero (anime style is pretty good)
\- Kengan Ashura
\- One Punch Man
PS : Try Blue Eye Samurai. It's actually pretty good. Don't know whether it falls under the 'anime' category. But I think it's what you call animation :) Give it a go
Hunter x Hunter , it’s shonen but it’s well written ..you can never predict were the plot is taking you
Girls’ Last Tour , follows two girls, as they travel through the empty ruins of a vast, post-apocalyptic city
- Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit
- Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song
- Monster/Pluto - same creator
- March Comes in Like a Lion
- Ergo Proxy
- Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
- Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
- Armored Trooper Votoms - And it's various spin offs (Mellowlink), there is some comedic relief however, those characters only make incidental pop ups. It's a pretty grounded rambo esque story in a grim dark sci fi universe.
- Blue Gender
- Psycho Pass
- Haibane Renmei
- Bubblegum Crisis
- Cyber City Oedo 808
- Spice and Wolf
- Banana Fish
- Parasyte the Maxim - outside of one dumb joke, which makes sense in context yeah it's pretty grounded action horror series
- The Rose of Versailles
- Ikoku Nikki - newly airing show, you probably will like it
Second Vinland Saga. For historical dramas we got a few big upcoming ones I would look at such as Historie or A Witch's Life in Mongolia, that I would check out if you are a fan of The Apothecary Diaries.
If you also find Chinese history interesting Kingdom IDK how you would do with it. It does have lots of great tactics/strategy and great characters that said the MC, is written more like a classic battle shonen esque hero (despite being an action seinen). Shin does grow on you though, I think, and while it's not that obvious, I do think he matures over the course of the story. This is a * recommendation because S1 is badly animated, and I just usually recommend the manga as a result. The adaption gets better by S2 and much better by S3 on.
>Ghost in the Shell
It's getting a remake this year, one that should be more manga faithful, though I guess Shirow's style is more expressive, granted I still think you should enjoy it.

Well one the medium is appealing to a largely YA demographic. To some extent, to become a big fan of this medium, even with all it's adult targeted shows, you have to accept and enjoy that to some extent. You can enjoy the more adult aimed stuff, however, that library is more limited.
Number 2 though, I mean sometimes this is literally just using the animation medium to it's fullest. While there is an appeal to more grounded styles and emotions, I mean sometimes it's great to go over the top, and not reflect real life at all. It's good sometimes to shove it into your face, largely because it would be ridiculous if you tried that it in live action. It depends on the work of course.
I’d say it seem you like more adult themes but you also didn’t like AoT, which makes me wonder if it’s an issue with gore, but Castelvania has plenty of that so… I’m at a bit of a loss tbh.
You might like Arcane. It’s western.
Broadly speaking some highly regarded shows worth at least giving a chance with no idea whether or not you’d like them are:
Freiren: Beyond Journey’s End, Dungeon Meshi, Violet Evergarden, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiju No. 8 and Demon Slayer
I dont have an issue with gore, Edgerunners had its fair share of it, what I disliked about AoT specifically were the weird screamed inner monologues as I mentioned earlier, otherwise I think its premise is really cool and unique and I also liked the logistics of the "city defenders" (dont remember what they are called) and how they use the ropes to jump around and move quickly.
I have watched Arcane and liked it a lot, Ill give a watch to the others you recommended thanks!
No, you are absolutely correct. I am really not sure how they lumped it with Castelvania and the Witcher.
It’s one of the best as much as my tastes is concerned and deserves every hype
Vinland Saga
Legend of galactic Heroes: Die neue these
Blue eyes samurai.
These are anime that have little to no fan service. Mature themes. Great animation. And awesome story telling.
Or a more recent one is Tonari no yokai-san, about a town where there are a lot of supernatural creatures living alongside humans. It has a bit of a Ghibli vibe with the pacing and having young kids in the main cast.
