I wonder if this arc will be better received in a anime format compared to its reception during serialization.
No-Possible-11232026-01-08 16:34
100%. Look what happen with aot bleach mha . History will repeat itself again

Mf's see it in colour and go "OH THATS WHAT WAS HAPPENING"

DAMN that’s a roast 😆
LoneKnightXI192026-01-08 17:35
obviously duh?
you thought JJK fans were actually reading the text bubbles instead of looking at the cool pictures?
detarameReddit2026-01-09 05:15
If you think about it, anime dialogue is basically someone reading the manga to you. It's the same principle behind kindergarteners being excited when the teacher reads *Elephant & Piggie*; they can't read it themselves.
foxfoxal2026-01-08 16:59
It helps that it will be basically pure fights but also the introduction of so many super hyper convenience tools.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 18:00
It helps that the director Gosso has been consistently good at making the scenes flow together super well.
RetconCrisis2026-01-08 17:54
Just to note, Bleach also had the benefit of the mangaka making direct changes and adding a ton of scenes and fights that weren't in the manga to improve on the work. I wonder how the reaction to the ending will be now depending on how much it is changed, since it looks like based on runtime most of the last cour will be anime original
icyflight2026-01-08 16:44
Some of the best moments of the series are in this arc. I wouldn't be surprised if it's well received.
Handyman21162026-01-08 16:48
Definitely, I never understood the Culling Games hate, it was such a blast to read, even though I binge read it
West_Command_25112026-01-08 16:59
On which platform to watch bro ?
Handyman21162026-01-08 17:18

The episode will release in like 40 minutes
West_Command_25112026-01-08 17:21
Okay bro tq 🤝
LeloThePGG2026-01-08 17:08
That was probably the key. Quite some parts of JJK didn't flow that well when I read them weekly, but binging a couple of volumes in one sitting made the pacing immediately better. I've had similar issues with the most recent parts of Chainsaw Man as well.
Being condensed into 24 episodes will do wonders for this arc imo
Ryuki-Exsul2026-01-08 17:14
[deleted]
LeloThePGG2026-01-08 17:59
I kinda disagree. Not saying that JJK is perfect or that it handled every of its moving parts well, but I don't think it's fair to say that after Shibuya there are only random fights with no emotional payoff.
However, that's a discussion that requires time and would just go too deep into spoiler territory, so let's just agree to disagree.
No_Name0_02026-01-08 18:07
Same. The leak culture around it also didn't help, killed all the hype for me. \[manga\]>!The sendai fight tho, that was really cool and the only one I liked and remember the most!<
Hounds_of_war2026-01-08 17:20
I think it’s gonna depend a lot on how attached to certain members of the cast you are and how much you wanna spend time on characters vs hype moments and aura.
Like, the people who think Hidden Inventory is a better arc than Shibuya are generally not gonna have a good time with post-Shibuya in my experience.
kiddoujanse2026-01-08 18:39
it was cool but the point system was just lame/convoluted
AndalusianGod2026-01-08 16:49
How many seasons will this arc be in anime format? It felt way too long in the manga.
Elgato012026-01-08 16:50
24 episodes
AndalusianGod2026-01-08 16:55
Not bad... I thought it was going to be 3 seasons at the minimum.
Kallenders2026-01-08 16:52
2 cour season, fights are much faster in anime format and I feel they're gonna cut out some of the narration like in Shibuya Arc
tripleaamin2026-01-08 16:53
Considering how many manga readers are complaining about how terrible it is, 100% it will be better received. Maki & Yuji got some interesting arcs in here. Plus, at the very least, the fights will be entertaining.
Shinjuku Showdown Arc imo is the one that I think is awful. Especially after the big fight.
devious12026-01-08 16:54
cooked take, shinjuju showdown is an amazing arc
foxfoxal2026-01-08 17:01

devious12026-01-08 17:05
calm down unc. thats the most boomer ass take ive ever seen lmao. Some people are just not made to read manga week by week, they just have the weakest mental ever.
No-Possible-11232026-01-08 16:58
Final arc by far has the most char writing so it’s clear you dgaf about writing lmao
MatthewScreenshots2026-01-08 17:19
There were anime-only people already complaining about Shibuya being too much of a fighting fest (various episode discussion threads during and after airing of S2).
Culling Game is even more of that, so anybody expecting more than just flashy fights will definitely be disappointed.
tripleaamin2026-01-08 17:23
I would agree with that.
With that being said, Shibuya is an arc that is pretty hyped up by manga readers. Even some are saying it's one of the best shounen arcs ever. (I still think Hidden Inventory is by far the best arc in JJK.)
In contrast, the Culling Games is a very divisive arc in terms of reception. Many manga readers claim it is when JJK fell off and it being awful, among many things.
It will feel like an extension of Shibuya for anime-onlies, as you mentioned. The difference is the expectations they hear from manga readers.
Nadril2026-01-08 16:56
Probably.
I wasn't a big fan of this arc in the manga but a big part of it is that I feel like Gege just can't draw fights that well. JJK fights can already be a bit confusing at times with how different powers interact and throw in some unclear panels and it just wasn't that enjoyable of a read for me.
With some great animation though it'll almost certainly elevate the arc.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 17:10
Gege is pretty great at drawing hand to hand combat but sometimes his fights are hard to follow, especially near the end when he started getting sick
Radiant-Character-612026-01-08 17:11
Wasn't there a Jujutsu sorcerer who's Domain expansion involved like a slot machine with different scenarios for different slot results? Even the panels of how it was explained was just a lot. But I'd imagine Mappa has more than enough experience cleaning up manga fights and exposition for the better.
DependentFearless1622026-01-08 17:23
That information dump is supposed to be confusing. It basically overwhelms the opponents when the domain is opened
AcceptablePay45232026-01-08 17:11
He is known for fights in the manga for jjk lol
Nerellos2026-01-08 17:01
This cour has one of the most creative fight(for me) in animes in general.
West_Command_25112026-01-08 17:15
Where to watch??
Tago2382382026-01-08 23:17
Which one are you talking about
Nerellos2026-01-08 23:43
Reggie
Hounds_of_war2026-01-08 17:04
To a degree, better pacing alone will help a decent amount, but there are some problems that are kinda just fundamentally baked in like [manga spoilers] >!the idiotic way Nobara gets handled or the fact that Yuta and Maki effectively never have a conversation in all of JJK proper outside of that one dumb argument relitigating strategy of a fight they already won!<
zelos222026-01-08 17:10
Absolutely. I already like the manga arc more than most but it was a little messy and sloppily paced. It will feel smoother in animation plus the fights and new powers will be absolutely transcendent if done right
javierm8857782026-01-08 20:12
I feel most of the parts people had issue with are unlikely to change much. The fights themselves are beloved and they'll likely work better in animation, but some of the inbetween parts or the fact that the story takes a while to actually progress due to how much of the arc happens in parallel are hard to change without restructuring it all, but that'd fuck up the fights so I doubt they'll do that.
Like most of the issues I've seen people have with the arc are [JJK manga] >!focused on the wider Culling Game itself. Stuff like the convoluted rules not really interacting much with the fights themselves since most of the actual competition happens before the characters get there, or the later involvement of the US military. !<
I do think it might help people who caught up during Shibuya or those who read the manga after S2 see the arc in a new light, especially knowing how things turn out and having more balanced expectations, as it often happens with good adaptations.
Massive_Weiner2026-01-08 17:35
Anime fans *will* like it more because battles in anime tend to be more hype than their manga counterparts, and Culling Games is just a battle gauntlet.
Unless they add some significant additions to the story, it’s going to get written off like what happened with the manga. Most people won’t care, though, so long as the animation is flashy.
Kallenders2026-01-08 17:38
Yeah, I think it'll be better received because MAPPA will deliver on the fights but the story complaints (lack of interactions between characters and prioritizing new characters over old ones) will carry over unless Goshozono adds a fuckton of anime original scenes
Massive_Weiner2026-01-08 17:40
Exactly. It’s going to be a lot of hype moments and aura farming edits.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 18:02
There def will be some added scenes and less narration which will make it better like with S2. Can’t fix everything but the pacing will def be an improvement which people will like.
Sirromnad2026-01-08 18:08
I hope so. I watched all of the available JJK , then afterwords went and read the entire manga. I definitely felt less enthused on everything post shibuya arc, and i'm curious of how much of that is just how well done the anime has been.
I'm excited to find out, and at the absolute least, if they keep up the quality of everything before it it's going to be a blast to watch.
frantruck2026-01-08 18:24
Yeah anime pacing will do wonders, waiting weekly for 1 50th of a fight scene in the manga was rough.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 16:34
Jjk probably has one of best and most experimental adaptions for a mainstream anime I’ve seen in a bit. Such a cool op
themcvgamer2026-01-08 16:52
Someone said its a bit like a tiktok edit ( I love it)
BellyDancerUrgot2026-01-08 17:03
Season 2 with the mahito vs todo and Yuji fight was peak animation. Totally didn’t expect it for a mainstream shonen tbh. Complete reversal of Escanor vs meliodas or the recent garou arc in op man.
Anshin2026-01-08 17:12
Wait where do you expect the best animation to be if its not the most popular shonen of the time?
croninhos22026-01-08 19:14
Popular shounen anime getting actual good animation is a very recent phenomena
Most people grew up watching terrible naruto and one piece fillers
2ndMin2026-01-08 19:26
Thinking JJK would inevitably get such a good adaptation is lowkey taking it for granted
Another studio just as easily could have got the rights and half assed it for easy money
FastenedCarrot2026-01-08 17:12
The Choso fight was also peak
Ichini-san2026-01-09 00:52
Still the best fight of the whole Anime imo.
todorokismom2026-01-08 17:21
I feel like you haven't been watching much mainstream shonen if you didn't expect it. There has been incredible animation for fights in JJK, My hero, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Bleach TYBW, Black Clover, Chainsaw man for like 6+ years now and I'm probably forgetting some other shonen. The real play is to learn what animators are sick and get excited when you see them on staff for an episode.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 17:58
Eh outside of kny and one piece, jjk really blows the others out of water. Even then jjk also consistently looks good when it comes to character acting and direction even outside of fight scenes.
My hero has some great scenes, but due to its schedule outside of movies and some fights it doesn’t look as good. Same with TYBW outside of the Yamato fight nothing really comes close. Black Clover best episides are great, in fact the director of jjk s2-3 worked on some of those episode, but most of the time it looks pretty mediocre at best due to terrible schedule.
Massive_Weiner2026-01-08 17:32
What’s experimental about it??
It’s a solid battle shounen adaptation. That’s a big reason why it has widespread popularity in the first place.
DeadlyDY2026-01-08 17:36
About the animation in particular. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you.
Massive_Weiner2026-01-08 17:39
Because it’s not “experimental.”
It’s flashy, cool and detailed, but there’s nothing transgressive or groundbreaking about the animation style here.
It’s not exactly Mononoke, you know? Now *that* movie is a painting come to life.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 17:53
Since season 2, JJK’s adaptation is probably the best looking shonen adaptation outside of kny ever. It’s way above average. When it comes to direction, composition, fight scenes, character acting it blows most anime, even movies, out of the water.
A lot of its visuals are very unique for a shonen adaption and it plays with a lot of styles of animation. for fights and character acting. Especially with the episodes with enough time to be finished in season 2, it looks gorgeous and is incredibly well directed. Episode 4 of s2 is a standout in particular of this case.
Massive_Weiner2026-01-08 18:00
I would actually give best-looking shonen to either Frieren or Mob Psycho.
But I agree that JJK has great animation. That’s just not “experimental.”
People just throw that word out there to make something sound impressive.
Mission-Address44092026-01-08 19:22
Mob psycho definitely deserves that convo, and it stayed very consistent through the 3 seasons it aired. What a show, it is pretty interesting, that when the convo of "best looking shows" come up, mob psycho dosent get mentioned that much, i guess it has to do with it not being as popular as jjk or a demon slayer
Massive_Weiner2026-01-08 19:25
It’s also not currently airing, which is a death sentence in terms of recency bias.
Mob was huge while it was a fresh release, but people have already moved on thanks to the eternal seasonal cycle.
It didn’t stop being good, it just stopped being relevant in terms of topical discourse.
Mission-Address44092026-01-08 19:32
100% on the recency bias factor, forgot about that apsect.
Kaxew2026-01-08 19:52
It's not the animations that makes it experimental. It's the direction. The difference between a normal battle shonen adaptation and a more unique, extravagant adaptation is very clear when you compared JJK's first season to seasons 2 and 3. Shota Goshozono is definitely not a generic director by any means.
PhantomXxZ2026-01-08 19:55
Mob Psycho, yes.
Frieren has its moments, but I feel like its animation style is pretty uninspired the majority of the time. I'd put OPM S1 above it.
t1dus132026-01-08 16:34
it has that forced tiktok catchiness
DeadByNebula2026-01-08 16:39
you're brainrotted my guy
Masneomlock2026-01-08 17:02

Jack_KH2026-01-08 16:36
I love these openings that are full of spoilers, but you don't realise it until you finish the cour.
Haha91haha2026-01-08 16:43
Mappa winking so hard at the manga readers that my monitor cracked lol.
joelstaz2026-01-08 16:53
Lmao the amount of characters about to be injected into the series is gonna be such a fun follow
tyler9809082026-01-08 16:46
Season 2 was filled to the brim with this. When you look back, it's quite crazy how almost the entire season was played out in the opening.
Muslim-boiii2026-01-08 17:04
Aot season 2 Ed
MetalCherryBlossom2026-01-08 19:37
That's a level beyond
Muslim-boiii2026-01-08 19:37
Yep it foreshadowed things that still wasn’t written in the MANGA
BadBehaviour6132026-01-08 20:18
I have never seen anything like that. I knew I was being spoiled I just didn't know what it was spoiling
jurble2026-01-09 02:00
Some of it was in-line with theories at the time e.g. you can find people commenting the girls eating the bodies must be Maria/Rose/Sina, though that was kinda obvious cuz 3 girls, and the walls were named after 3 girls
I don't think anyone knew who they were eating tho lol
HarshTheDev2026-01-09 21:02
I'm surprised nobody did considering Ymir was foreshadowed as some sort of titan figure as early as chapter **18.5** of the manga.
Impossible_Front44622026-01-08 17:11
Which is why opening 1 will always have a special place in my heart. The misdirection in that one was genius
Vocall962026-01-08 17:32
What was the misdirection?
ToyScrubBear2026-01-08 17:41
I think it was showing Junpei as part of the team
Vocall962026-01-09 06:33
lol, that's heartless
FastenedCarrot2026-01-08 17:13
Noticing all of that during season 2 was so cool. This is another reason not to skip intros
King_Dheginsea2026-01-08 18:04
They pulled it off really well with this OP as well. A lot of the 'spoilers' - as well as being abstract, are single-frame blink-and-you-miss-it type beat. Stuff you wouldn't notice unless you purposefully go through the OP frame by frame.
Cageep2026-01-08 16:40
This is one of the unique openings I’ve ever seen. I fucking love all the visuals (especially the painting ones) and the song is growing on me more and more.
SeventhAscendant2026-01-08 16:41
King gnu don't miss!
Animations looks incredible with all the art styles... The still frames at the beginning.. is that artistic liberty or unfinished frames..? Looked kinda incomplete on first watch
Electrical_Chance9912026-01-08 16:47
>is that artistic liberty or unfinished frames..?
100% artist liberties. This OP is directed by Shota Goshozono and he is one of the most creative directors working in the industry. JJK is soo fkin blessed to be led by him.
Muted-Conference29002026-01-08 16:58
You can't comprehend Goso Cinema.
KrzyDankus2026-01-08 16:41
always wondered what a gosso OP would look like and unsurprisingly its really good.
DirectionExact312026-01-08 17:26
Oh, Gosso directed this!
Makes sense lol
TopConcept5702026-01-08 16:43
Not really a fan of the song, but it has cool visuals
tyler9809082026-01-08 16:47
I think it has a nice vibe to it. I also remember lots of people not liking SPECIALZ, I got addicted to that song for a month when it came out.
TopConcept5702026-01-08 16:52
op3 of jjk is just too good, I dont think they will ever top it. I hope they do
kingfirejet2026-01-08 17:22
SPECIALZ first 5 secs is such a massive bop to entice your ears. Idk how people hated it.
WolzardFire2026-01-08 17:22
SPECIALZ has that unsettling mystery vibe that fits really well with JJK imo, especially the Shibuya Incident. I really like the song, and the OP visual enhanced the experience
Time_Fracture2026-01-08 16:50
So far it's visually the best of this season. There's still more (Oshi no Ko, Hell's Paradise, Frieren, and don't forget Sentenced to be Hero still hasn't aired its OP yet) to come.
North_Tough92362026-01-08 17:41
I thought the same as first, but after watching it 7 times in a row (for the visuals) I've started dance along with the song.
Haha91haha2026-01-08 16:43
MAPPA THE YEAR JUST STARTED GIVE OTHER OPS A CHANCE! Holy fuck they somehow outdid Specialz with how much hints and peak they put into one OP.
Time_Fracture2026-01-08 16:44
Song title is **AIZO** by **King Gnu** (yes, who also did SPECIALZ in Season 2).

SonicAlarm2026-01-08 16:45
I know that the manga wasn't received super well, but I'm very excited to see how they translate it onto the screen. Hyped.
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-08 17:07
Eh there are some big problems. But it’s not terrible, especially since the anime likes adding and improving scenes in the manga, it’ll probably received fine. These first two eps already got a good amount of scenes added in.
Hounds_of_war2026-01-08 17:15
Yeah honestly 90% of my issues with the JJK manga could be fixed by adding additional scenes. I hope the anime does a decent amount of that.
Hell, I’d be happy if we just got Jujustrolls back.
detarameReddit2026-01-09 05:37
The question is, has the added scenes actually filled in gaps in characterization, or other things that were left unaddressed in the manga?
I'm an anime-only, so I have no idea. Could someone tell me?
Terrible-Trick-60872026-01-09 13:15
A lot of namani’s death is added in the anime for example. So far they’re mostly adding gaps in characterization it’s unknown if they’re going to give more context for things in the manga.
blackkami2026-01-08 17:11
The biggest problem was having to wait a week between chapters. It wasn't the greatest arc. But it wasn't as bad as social media wants you to think.

Freddy_The_Goat2026-01-08 17:04
Man this adaptation looks so stunning and experimental that it makes me wonder if my criticisms with the source material will be addressed purely through the strength of it's production.
Even at it's worst, the manga was still decent. So when you give it a consistently stunning, successfully experimental and industry leading adaptation all those flaws end up looking negligible.
So yeah, this is one of the most exquisite and best directed OPs I've ever seen, especially for a mainstream shounen.

Shibuya is much better, but it’s basically a giant jujutsu Fortnite match so it’s still quite fun. The next arc probably has people’s favorite and least famous moments in the series
BlueDragon1012026-01-08 20:35
Shibuya is where the plot peaked, but the fights only get crazier and cooler from here on out.
IloveKaitlyn2026-01-08 17:59
Really awesome! I hope they can improve upon the manga, there was a lot of issues that I think can be resolved by fleshing it out in the anime.

Genuinely think Mappa are untouchable as far as OPs go. There are so many shots held for just a few frames in this that could be paintings, absolutely unreal.

Better than "specialz" imo

There's a lot of things to say about this OP, but I think it's going to be my favourite OP of the series (so far!!). It just looks like a huge love letter to this arc.
It feels inspired by the SPECIALZ music video, chock full of references and symbolism from Japanese culture in the same way that many of the new and old characters are inspired by it, all the good and the bad parts of it.
Something understated is just how love some people have for every minor character that shows up in jjk lol. All the fans of any of the minor characters are feasting deliciously on this OP. The OP is screaming "This is JJK", with all these character's different themes being mashed together in the chaos that is the Culling Game arc.
When you see all these different character's with extremely varying themes being shown off like this, you get an OP with a throughline of the feeling of "fuck society" all throughout it lol. The nuke being a major defining theme of this OP is also pretty ballsy, it fits perfectly.
'Aizo' just feels like it understands the Culling Game arc, Fake Geto is perfectly displayed in here. I think the OP by itself will help anime-onlies feel the tone of this arc in a way manga readers didn't get to,
I think is fair to say that every OP in this series has newly defined how JJK is viewed. Each OP Director has wonderfully applied their vision to the series, Shingo Yamashita's symbology in Kai Kai Kitan and Vivid Vice, Yuki Kamiya's perfect contrasting pairing of Where Our Blue Is & SPECIALZ, and now Shota Goshozono's Aizo. This is leading me to believe that like the first two pairs, the next OP will complement this one perfectly as well.

All the spoilers really ruined any excitement I had for this show
moichispa2026-01-08 18:42
Is this opening an homage to other anime openings? Because 0:40 look like gits sac season 2 0:58 (some poses are even the same)
Edit found another one, 1.01 might be a reference to Elfen lied op (which is a reference to a famous painting

can't believe i have to scroll this far down to find someone that actually caught the reference and yes that was the GiTS SAC's opening reference

I checked after the message and I saw some people on Twitter and the thread on the JJK subreddit talking about it.
It is a great series, I hope some curious people watch it because of the reference

1:17 looks like from Medabots

Can't wait for this to come out. I've only recently read the manga, and it's peak.

Why do I know that song already?

Do I need to see any movies before this season? So confusing these days.

Watch order is: S1, JJK 0 movie, S2, S3. So as long as you have watched all of that you’re good to go

All the way since 2023 goddamn I MISSED YOUUUUUUU
you thought JJK fans were actually reading the text bubbles instead of looking at the cool pictures?
Being condensed into 24 episodes will do wonders for this arc imo
However, that's a discussion that requires time and would just go too deep into spoiler territory, so let's just agree to disagree.
Like, the people who think Hidden Inventory is a better arc than Shibuya are generally not gonna have a good time with post-Shibuya in my experience.
Shinjuku Showdown Arc imo is the one that I think is awful. Especially after the big fight.
Culling Game is even more of that, so anybody expecting more than just flashy fights will definitely be disappointed.
Unless they add some significant additions to the story, it’s going to get written off like what happened with the manga. Most people won’t care, though, so long as the animation is flashy.
I'm excited to find out, and at the absolute least, if they keep up the quality of everything before it it's going to be a blast to watch.
Most people grew up watching terrible naruto and one piece fillers
Another studio just as easily could have got the rights and half assed it for easy money
It’s a solid battle shounen adaptation. That’s a big reason why it has widespread popularity in the first place.
It’s flashy, cool and detailed, but there’s nothing transgressive or groundbreaking about the animation style here.
It’s not exactly Mononoke, you know? Now *that* movie is a painting come to life.
But I agree that JJK has great animation. That’s just not “experimental.”
People just throw that word out there to make something sound impressive.
Mob was huge while it was a fresh release, but people have already moved on thanks to the eternal seasonal cycle.
It didn’t stop being good, it just stopped being relevant in terms of topical discourse.
Frieren has its moments, but I feel like its animation style is pretty uninspired the majority of the time. I'd put OPM S1 above it.
I don't think anyone knew who they were eating tho lol
Animations looks incredible with all the art styles... The still frames at the beginning.. is that artistic liberty or unfinished frames..? Looked kinda incomplete on first watch
100% artist liberties. This OP is directed by Shota Goshozono and he is one of the most creative directors working in the industry. JJK is soo fkin blessed to be led by him.
Makes sense lol

Hell, I’d be happy if we just got Jujustrolls back.
I'm an anime-only, so I have no idea. Could someone tell me?

Even at it's worst, the manga was still decent. So when you give it a consistently stunning, successfully experimental and industry leading adaptation all those flaws end up looking negligible.
So yeah, this is one of the most exquisite and best directed OPs I've ever seen, especially for a mainstream shounen.
