So is the implication here that her drawings can come to life by draining the energy of those it’s depicting? Like she drew that dude and he lost his mojo/energy. Then she gave it back?
I'm going to be honest, that sounds like you are blaming them for following logical health procedures to ensure they don't die from interacting with a poisonous person.
This probably wasn't your intention but the wording certainly didn't help.
Leprosy can't be caught by touch. Her poison on the other hand...
We're going to find out her powers have a good side to them too.
Perhaps even the trail of mushrooms is because the land under the king itself is tainted, not because her power is truly constant.
Her mushrooms are also literally poisonous. If you touch or worse eat them bad things will happen, doesn't matter if you are good or bad.
When she purified the book she was using her magic consciously with that desired outcome in mind.
Lastly her mushrooms are poisonous is the belief, but I a saying I expect it to unwind.
If you're so sure that this story has no twists and nothing will develop from what was shown in episode 1, why bother watching the rest?
Damn now I want an Austin Powers anime..
Hidden within a forest lies the Champignon Witch known as Luna (Haruka Shiraishi!), with her various cute little animal companions! She's not a girl of many words, but her companions, such as Minos (Emiri Kato!), more than make up for it.
The OP is very atmospheric and moody, fitting for a fantasy series.
It's only unfortunate that Luna is shunned and ostracized for being a "Black Witch," and seen repulsively for all the mushrooms that appear around her and with her very step...even if those very same poisonous mushrooms are only her detoxifying the negative emotions around her. She's doing them a service, and they don't even know.
She's even the one who gifts them the high-tier medicine she makes, and while it's nice to have someone like the apothecary who doesn't completely shun her (if still treats her with a slight distance), she's genuinely just happy to make enough money to buy books as well as help those in need. She even tries to go out of her way to find someone dealing with a severe injury, just for the sake of curing their missing limb.
She's also slightly friendly with the local bookstore owner, and maybe attracted to his handsome half-spirit features as well (or his true spirit form) even if he also makes sure she doesn't stay at his shop long enough to ward of other customers and he's insistent that she not fall for him.
In fact Luna can't help but fantasize about romance in general, especially when she sees local ladies man Henri (Shoya Chiba) wooing a beautiful blonde...but considering her status, the likelihood that she'd find love like that is probably slim.
But in her drawings, she can summon forth a paper boyfriend! He can't speak, but he can dance with her in the night sky! And for a brief moment, Luna understands what it feels to have someone truly in her life! Though that has consequences for Henri as well.

Two cute Lunas in one day.
…what was going on with the synching of those first two narrator lines?
Oh the textures in everything, how lovely.
Maybe I’m on bad internet; the video keeps skipping every so many minutes.
Her roses are adorable ☺️
Ah her hat, so precious.
Another romance lover! 💃🏾
“Loves to draw” she could be a forensic sketch artist, or wherever they’re called. Or a successful shoujosei illustrator/mangaka.
✨sparkle sparkle twinkle twinkle✨
Oh we get dub credits?! Kinda? In a way?
The ED is and sounds *gorgeous*. And depressing, oh my lord.

I’m still surprised this doesn’t have an official EN translation for series or an announcement for one.
Takeshi Hama doing the soundtrack after I thought this sounded like Zelda and wanted to know the composer.
Haruka Shiraishi being a witch twice this year (the other time in *Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch*).
Rosu’s breathy voice is so mystical and lovely for the OP composition. She reminds me of Suzu/Belle (Kaho Nakamura) when she sang “Gales of Song”.
I like episode 1. I was surprised when it ended. But I’m glad episode 2 dropped with it.
The music is lovely and the setting is interesting. Luna and her friends are cute
Chica Umino recommended the series
Really digging how comfy and oldschool the overall feel is.
Why didn't Luna ask the apothecary owner to pay with items instead of coin, so she can get the paper, pencils and the red vest at the same time?
She would have access to more goods that way.
Just because she visited him doesn't mean people need to make such connection and just because they can make such connection doesn't mean they want to accept it as reality.
Who could possibly be making this magic medicine?
Hidden gem!!!
I read Gakuen Alice a lot as a teenager and it left a very strong impression on me. It did drama so well! So many hard hitting moments!
So of course I'm glad that the same mangaka is getting another of her stories animated.
The world of the Champignon Witch is a grim fairytale. Luna deserves everything yet there are only two people who would do business with her and she is avoided by all other towns people. There are even witch hunts where innocent people are getting publically executed. We can only hope Luna can avoid that fate.
Her body being that poisonous reminds me of Cardia from Code;Realize. It's a terribly isolating existance, but at least Luna has a magical animal friends.
Btw the OP song is incredibly pretty! And the ED is a response to it! A sad response...
With that cover image, I had hoped for some witchy yuri
She's playing with fire every time she comes into town. Townsfolk probably think she only does it to spread poisonous mushrooms, or maybe some more nefarious deeds.
Things certainly didn't work out for that young man, but the narrator didn't tell us what exactly happened. It might have never happened before, but surely it could happen again. I just don't think the shrooms are dangerous.
Also it's interesting that the shrooms back at her house only appear when she wants them to.
That wasn't the narrator, it was the spirit dude, and the townsfolk are not privy to the same information that he is.
Which would explain why those giant mushrooms grew where the execution happened - it was an innocent person getting killed for daring to disagree with the ruler and a crowd of bloodthirsty townsfolk who enjoyed the spectacle of it.
They did say that those loyal to the crown were known as white witches/wizards and those disloyal were black witches/wizards

The vast and colorful forestry backgrounds looks stunning. Likewise the rustic amber-like interior of most buildings and the beautiful medieval music to compliment the fantasy setting is just * chef's kiss *
I know a lot of young'uns like their series without a narrator that overexplains the setting, but these kinds of fantasy focused shows really do fit the use of a narrator, specially one with such a soothing voice, and also specially in order to fill in the details of a main protagonist with very few dialogues.
Really dig the setting of a powerful mage misunderstood by the masses to the point of her people being unfairly villianized. It's also a nice change of beat to have a protag that doesn't immediately becomes the beloved savior of each and every other character in the kingdom.
This title in it's sum perfectly evokes old school fantasy animation from the 80s and I love it.
I'd kill for a narrator to explain things for me in real life to help my awkward ass 😂
I love witches.
I LOVE fairytales and storytelling.
...
Yep. Q\_Q
Oh gosh I love this.
It took me a little bit to warm to the art style, but it charmed me by the end. It reminds me of old Disney or 60s-era anime with that slightly-inconsistent hand-drawn look to many of the backdrops.
Folk may balk at this, but it kind of reminded me of Frieren with its calm music, landscape shots, and an air of melancholy pierced by the spark of a daring to hope for a connection with someone. I'm excited for more.
No isekai element. Just a normal fantasy setting
And it looks like [Luna made an unexpected bond with the cute boy in town [after she started to draw him.](https://i.imgur.com/8SYFfTO.jpeg) Not gonna lie, [her reaction when she realized what she did](https://i.imgur.com/7Hwm3l4.jpeg) was actually pretty funny. I guess she somehow absorbed the guy's essence or something? [At least she was able to give it back to him!](https://i.imgur.com/AX4Orbk.jpeg)
Wait what, is the town French? Why not Kinoko no Majo?
Wel,l I guess the town's aesthetics and the world setting is close enough to medieval Europe, if you disregard the blatant kanji.
Luna seems like such a sweetheart, I feel so bad for her. She’s helping everyone out so much and gets nothing but scorn in return.
It might just be me but she’s kind of giving off autism vibes. It’s a bit like looking in a mirror.
Oh no, poor Luna. Her drawing magic seems to have negative consequences. At least she can reverse it but that’s still not good.
Screw being poisoned, giving her a hug for a few seconds before I die would be worth it.
Unfortunately she’s fictional so I can’t do it but I hope someone else will cause she deserves it.
When hugging the cute but sad mushroom witch, be sure to wear your poison-proof hugging poncho.
As for those witch hunts going on ... yeah, things will happen for sure. :O
More interesting, there's witch hunts. If so, what's the reason she isn't hunted down? Is it because no human can get close to her from her poison aura? Well, I guess the pharmacist can be close to her with only a face mask. Have they tried before and she proved to be able to fight back/defend herself through some other magic means? Are witch hunts actually a political excuse by the town to get rid of inconvenient people by claiming they're supposedly black witches and she's not a political problem for the town? (And obviously, I don't mean the political part where black witches in the first place are stigmatized by the nation as a whole b/c they're disloyal to the crown)
Is her hat a mood hat actually? It felt intentional that she changed her red hood to a witch's hat in response to people's reactions to her, but the thorny vines, then the rose when she was peeking at the half-spirit's true form, it wilting when the spirit told her not to peek and fall in love, and the many roses when she was reading the book... Seems like at the very least it could be both subconscious and conscious. Mood indicators are always so cute.
THE HAT HAS A FACE AND IS EATING THE BOOKS NOW? IT'S SO PEAK?
The mushroom that grew from the book had mouths and hostility, but technically it wasn't nearly as big as the ones that grew from the execution site. So maybe it's not just about the quantity of miasma or whatever but also the quality, this being a curse and all specifically.
Ok, confirmation that they do not in fact know she's the one making the mysterious improbable medicines, even as she openly walks towards the drugstore on her visits without subtlety. Guess no one's sticking around to really see where she's going when she's in town. I would've thought maybe they'd do it out of suspicion of her evil or something, but guess not. ...Or well, the trail of mushrooms leading to the apothecary, but they haven't exactly explained how the town handles the mushrooms yet so maybe they just avoid them and they eventually disappear or something.
Oh my god she made the drug pouch grow legs that's so fucking adorable she's so cute oh my god
Lmao everyone in fear and the PDA couple just like 'bruh that witch can't mind her own business' 'ofc she can't girl u fabulous' ok
Oh god the mushrooms have faces now too. Adorable.
Ah, so she accidentally stole his... uhhhhhhh idk, his kon/hun?
She gave it back but now he's fallen for her from it, though it wasn't her intention.
...Kinda sucks that he was in a relationship though.
...Huh, interesting ED. Who's the girl(?)? Blonde hair like the guy... I wonder. Will we timeskip to when that guy has a child and the child becomes interested in the witch? That's my guess.
Immaculate witchy vibes too. Just surreal enough, but beautiful in its own way.
Will stick with it for now, but it’s a pretty rough start.
I love all the little weird touches, like Luna handing the books she purchased up to be eaten by her hat. And her various large and small animal friends, too. Giant cat out of nowhere? Why not.
I really like the style of the [paired OP/ED](https://x.com/hty_content/status/2009347333511893148).
The opening and ending being the same, but like looking at two overlapping worlds with different lenses... It's soooo good. T\_T
The magic just used in this episode was so expressive and innovative in so many ways that it was just so enjoying too watch. I at least can't remember on the top of my head any anime that had magic that was so fun. They really went above and beyond to visualize it as well the witch hat transforming, blooming roses and having a mouth to stow away books was perhaps my favourite piece of magic shown. Small things like that, that are just added to enrich the world, give it more flavor and mike it feel that much more alive, are just so great for a fantasy anime.
Luna and her entourage of fey animals and the villagers also look lke such a great cast of characters. On top of that the bit of world building we've seen with the black and white magicians is a good ground for future conflicts.
On top of that the show also looked and sounded really great. Especially the music instantly stoof out for me.
I'll go hop right into the second episode now, since apperently nearly every great anime treats us with extra length or double premieres this season.
This Luna really has a strong heart (helped by her transformable mates surely), I am sure that most who are regarded as "dark witches" in such a world would...really turn into dark witches by all those despairs they face, if they aren't dead already.
Its quite clear Im only picking up on a small amount of the symbolism here.
I feel so bad for her, being so ostracized like that. I hope she finds more friends and romance soon!
"I picked up a very strange book. I can't even pick it up." Just funny wording.
If there are witch hunts and executions, she really is risking a lot coming into town. The townsfolk don't even know she's the source of the medicine, which means they probably think she comes into town in order to sprout her poisonous mushrooms everywhere. It's only a matter of time before they try to burn her alive.
I'd heard about photographs stealing people's souls, but a pencil drawing by a witch is a new one. Glad she found out before she de-souled more people.
Everyone: "run it's the black witch!"
so the town loves her medicine but not the one who makes it, and she sanitizes their town of evil energy just by walking through it, yet they only see her as spreading poison mushrooms. will they ever find out how much she actually helps them? perhaps it doesn't matter either way.
Anyway, it's pretty! Really pretty!
I wonder if White Witches are the inversion of Black ones? If they produce things of joy and sublime beauty, earning them admiration, but in reality those things are made by siphoning positive energy out of the world.
And isn't she way too old for him? 👀
Luna makes me sad but she’s so strong. And she does such good around her. Cant wait for more eps
I wonder if that spell Luna cast on Henri made him like her; it was very strange and it didn't explain exactly what the spell was. He was depressed because his gf was dumping him for whatever reason so he looked sad but then the spell made him irresistible to women?
