Fantasy with good animation recs?

Anybody got any fantasy with good animation (yeah please non-isekai and non-mecha) recs? Thank you.
Also its better if the mc is smart as hell and doing wonders with their powers and not just completely overpowered person with overpowered spell, i want crazy level of creativity.

Hi Nola141, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

Frieren

Nola1412026-01-08 19:33

I already watched frieren and she also didnt fit the bill lowkey 😂

abandoned_idol2026-01-08 19:48

You might be in the wrong genre.

The norm in anime fantasy is "dumb characters" and "omnipotent power". With a few exceptions (Laios from "Dungeon Meshi).

It's not the "smart people genre".

Nola1412026-01-08 19:49

I know its rare but they still exists 😂

SunnySanity2026-01-08 19:32

You said no isekai, but Mushoku Tensei should be what you're looking for.

If you want smart, creative, overpowered characters that's not isekai, try Frieren.

TheDPJ2026-01-08 19:45

I'm a big Mushoku Tensei fan and when I finished S2 of MT I moved onto Frieren because there was talk that if I liked MT I'd also love Frieren. Both are top 10 in my list now.

SunnySanity2026-01-08 19:50

Gonna put you on this before the anime comes out. Back in 2020, I was trying to get people to read 4 things:

Chainsaw Man,
Frieren,
Apothecary Diaries (called Drugstore Soliloquy back then),

and Survival story of a Sword King in a Fantasy World. It seems like it starts out like Solo Leveling, but just trust.

TheDPJ2026-01-08 20:02

I've watched all of these except for Sword King but I enjoyed Solo Leveling so I'll put that in my to-watch list thanks!

Secrets of the Silent Witch immediately came to mind.

Nola1412026-01-08 19:34

Oh its the recent one right? Havent watched it bcs i watched other anime ill put it on my watchlist thanks

Embarrassed-Bend66342026-01-08 19:46

Good recommendation, I have been watching and it is a fun show. Love the mc!

Tcasty2026-01-08 20:00

Great rec I just watched episode 1 because of this comment. I'm totally gonna watch S1

Beginning-Hope-26002026-01-08 20:43

Definitely an underrated show in my opinion—great animation, likeable characters, a good story, and compelling worldbuilding.

brannigansl4w2026-01-08 19:53

Danmachi has some incredibly well animated fights

Potomaters2026-01-08 20:24

Unfortunately, non-isekai fantasy are very rare to see in anime (which is strange considering how prevalent they are in like jrpgs). I honestly can’t think of any good ones that fit your requirements.

Nola1412026-01-08 20:24

Its okay🥲

SnooWoofers1862026-01-09 07:31

Isekai dump was a recent thingy which end up too many lousy ones today, fantasy anime without Isekai elements was always around. I don’t think they are rare

Beginning-Hope-26002026-01-08 20:54

Can't speak to if it will continue to be good, but *Sentenced to be a Hero* had an excellent first episode and is airing this season. I'm still completing it myself, but *Clevatess* has been fairly good and has been well-received in the community. If you're looking purely for smart MCs in fantasy (really hard to find) then *Genius Prince's Guiding to Raising a Nation Out of Debt* is quite good, though it is more a comedy. *Spice and Wolf* is more a romance and doesn't have much magic use, but the main characters are intelligent and the animation is excellent.

Seirei no Moribito

Moribito

ZoulsGaming2026-01-08 23:31

I still feel like "Hai to Gensou no Grimgar" holds up animation wise,

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR0UcWq\_JrY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR0UcWq_JrY) a very non spoilery trailer.

its basically "what if isekai but nobody knows it is isekai or remembers anything" so its not really.
