I continued the remake of Cat's Eye, and I'm debating if my suspension of my disbelief is holding up. A lot of it is pretty bizarre and it plays very hard into the realm of "don't think, just enjoy" as none of this would've made sense IRL.

I saw this [Japanese Red Bull ad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysDKFFc00zE) which I can also find the [German version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClWlw90xYAs) and then searched for the English only (it's non-Red Bull uploads like [this one from the voice caster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYX97xTlsPw)) and that poppped up.

Oh, since I talked about Where Winds Meet on the last CDF, I think it's very interesting to see the gaming scene changing in the past few years, and we have another player in the field: China, and it definitely came in swinging.

I think it's in a way similar to Japan and Anime in terms of soft power. A lot of people came to be interested in Japan and its culture due to its anime/manga exports, and I feel like China is now starting to do the same with video games that feature Chinese culture.

I think the two biggest hits that made the global market take them seriously are Genshin a couple years back, and more recently Black Myth Wukong (which is very Chinese-coded). On a similar note, I am very much feeling it also in Where Winds Meet which feels like it captures a lot of Chinese elements well (though, I am not one so cannot confirm).

I do think it's interesting though that even outside of Hoyo and the gacha sphere, and outside of Chinese themed games, there seem to be big hits out of China, namely Marvel Rivals, which didn't hit very well in the east but seems to be huge in NA/EU so far.

There are also some other live service games that came out like FragPunk and MechaBreak but they have seem to have fallen off quite a bit. Maybe they have a better playerbase in China, idk.

Some other games that have been announced somewhat recently seem to be [Blood Message](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bW1m_qzi4EM) and [Phantom Blade Zero](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q89X4nOzxGw). We'll see how they turn out.

Yeah 5D's was originally the one I wanted to go next, but since everyone mentioned GX I decided to go for that instead.

Glad I did though. I actually kinda like the cast a bit better as well so it will be interesting to see where they go.

5Ds is my favorite out of the YGOs I've watched so far so I do hope you enjoy it whenever you get around to it, but GX is also pretty good. Definitely slow to get into any major plot points, but it fits for the setting being a school for there to be a lot of random hijinks instead of serious plot for a while.

So I started Gundam Seed (can't download any of the rest of the French anime I want to get to on my tablet easily, figured I might as well try to wash the taste of Requiem for Vengeance out of my mouth) and I had a random-ish question about the various Gundam properties as a whole:

Is there a strong cultural reason that so many of Gundam's wars have been, well, essentially wars of independence from space colonies against the earth-bound mother countries? The arguments for self-rule and no representation and how politicians from earth couldn't possibly understand the complexities and realities of life in space match up almost perfectly, and then the in-fighting and alliances forming and breaking almost at a whim... But as far as I know, Japan never really had that sort of conflict in its history against a colonial power?

If they're just essentially copying other countries' fights for independence that's fine too, I'm just surprised that it's the independence-revolution-focused stories that ended up becoming so powerful and famous in Japan... Unless this, too, is post-WWII and America-related...

I think a lot of it is just being inspired by the first series. Think of the way Star Wars has to do Rebel vs Empire all the time, Gundam does the same for Earth vs Space Colonies, because original. I think it's interesting because the original does take more steps to make it so even though it is a War of Independence to make it more Japan focused. There was less racism against Spacians that drove the war. It was a fake war of independence really. It was just nationalism and war mongering, to mirror the Japanese WW-II situation.

Maybe my mind's just muddied from being fire-hosed with revolutionary knowledge from a podcast and I'm seeing things where there aren't any... The political situation and arguments just seemed more of a mirror of, say, the American revolutionary war and the US and Britain where it's the colonists being sick of being treated like second class citizens than it did of Japan's relationship with the US after WWII.

Maybe I'll have to give the OG 0079 another try at some point and see whether I can actually understand the politics going on this time, because following Amuro and the White Base I understood like 0 of it.

I'll admit I haven't seen Seed, but I am watching IBO which also features an Earth vs Colony conflict that seems to draw from upon being a colony.

'79 you can definitely feel the influence of someone who grew up in a post WW2 Japan. Tomino was born in 41, so he would be growing up in the aftermath of that war. That influence of not just "war is bad" but more directly "here are the ways Japan got pushed into the war" are big.

Which does make it a Japanese show with the villain a stand in for Japan. I think it's important the way that Amuro fights for Earth but is from Space. That's such an interesting piece of the story

Tomino was very anti-imperialism. He was born during WW2, and grew up heavily resenting the politicians and politics of Imperial Japan, blaming them for essentially leading to the Japan he had to grow up in.

"Children" being effectively forced to fight in wars they had absolutely no say in, while the "Adults" who caused them either hide behind these kids as shields/fodder or actively pursue personal gain, whether it's material, political or even ego stroking, with complete disregard for the lives/well-being of others.

It's a running theme in most of his major works and most UC side-material media tend to build off some aspect of those ideas. When it comes to Seed, it was basically a reboot/expy of the Mobile Suit Gundam plot with some bits of Zeta Gundam. Seed + Seed Destiny is effectively a "modern" version of MSG + Zeta Gundam.

OK swapping away from historical inspirations for Gundam to artposting:

[Nagisa Furukawa](https://files.catbox.moe/6m7vjp.png) in watercolor and color pencil touchups. This is like... my 5th or so attempt at de-Key-ifying Nagisa while still having her recognizable. I'm more or less stubbornly going to keep trying until I'm satisfied with the result. Definitely better than my previous attempts, I think she's actually recognizable now and the face shading's pretty OK, but I still haven't figured out watercolor dark hair, and it still looks flat... Maybe I needed to start with a strong blue base before moving onto the main brown color? Things to experiment with next time.

Her ahegao antennae does seem really hard to translate into something realistic though. I haven't got much clue about colouring though.

I think there's some elements like the ahegao that're so essential to her design that they'll be impossible to really remove, and just keeping it at some level of stylization is necessary. Character design is still something I'm pretty weak at, and trying to identify the non-negotiables in a character design is something I struggle with a lot.

At least at my current skill level, it's this mix between keeping the water decently under control (if I don't it creates really uneven splotches) which is giving me a more flat tone (which, in some ways, is good, it means that my water control is good enough to get a consistent color throughout without obvious blemishes) but I also need to create strong contrasts to create the illusion of depth which... yeah. I might need to approach it differently, actually, I've been treating hair like I would with pencil and color pencil, while I might need to treat it more like how I'd watercolor a sphere. Things to try.

So yeah, unfortunately it's less making the proper color and more applying it without having it look horrendous, because watercolor is weird.

Everyone tells me that the Rams are really good this year, and fanduel has them 2nd most likely to be in the superbowl but they're apparently the 5th seed?

The previous Superbowl teams the Kansas City Chiefs didn't even make to the playoffs this year.

The playoffs include the Panthers, a team with a losing record.

I spent half a year listening to memes about how JJ McCarthy was the worst QB in 2 decades, only for him to come back and start to win games.

None of this makes sense to me, all of it feels random.

Since it is his first year starting, he is still getting used to the game and should be given more grace as he has not yet reached his full potential. Its a recent trend that teams move on from QBs way to quickly instead of developing them.

God don't even get me started on Riftbound. Those boxes are even more expensive than One Piece TCG sets! The prices for those cards are crazy. It's still early in the card game and it remains to be seen how that will all shake out, but it seems like it's going to be a highly sought after card game for a while now.

Riftbound having so many cards in the $500+ range is absurd though.

(Korn - The Paradigm Shift)

This one kinda feels like they retained the songwriting style of The Path of Totality, but stripped away the brostep elements of that album, resulting in a more "pure" Korn sounding album. Overall, that's good, because I think their post-Korn III style is likely my favorite, although this album doesn't have the standout songs of The Path of Totality (though I do think Prey for Me is great and Never Never is pretty good).

Again though, this is also an album that I'll give another try or two in the future.

**Gundam IBO S1 review**

and all of that was just job one!

After spending like 4 months in Tomino Gundam, it's refreshing to get some new Gundam. Something so new and completely different from the cycle of violence that Tomino has been dealing with.

Like just taking beam weaponry off the table does so much to make the combat so much more fresh. No more funnel bits. Instead of everyone having the same beam saber, mobile suits can have swords, axes, hammers, lances, or other forms of weapons. The sound of large cannons has more weight to it. Even just the way people die feels more physical. Just dying in an explosion can feel strangely impersonal. Like a video game character. They were there one moment and then they weren't the next.

In IBO people get crushed and smashed. Their remains don't suddenly disappear, but linger inside the mobile suit.

It also meant there was more physical damage on mobile suits. With beam weapons the ability to One Shot means that when portraying the combat you are restricted to dodging and parrying. In IBO with physical weapons we got a lot more armor clashing, being bent, or being torn off.

The end result is a series that is more visceral to experience than previous Gundam series I've seen.

The story was fine. It didn't draw me in the way Tomino or G-Witch drew me in, but I enjoyed the characters a lot.

I care about Orga and the Tekkadan ~~crew~~ family. They do a good job of selling this group of child soldiers who have no other options left but to fight. They have no home to return to, no future to look forward to, and so all they have is each other and moving forward. Trying to obey the rules of society would never give them freedom. [IBO S1]>!The final battle requiring a diversion attack, Orga forcing to sacrifice the bulk of his troops, his family, to sneak by did a good job of showcasing the resolve of the crew.!<

Mikazuki works as a living weapon. He gets a few moments where some character shine through. [IBO S1]>!When Carta challenges him to a team dual and gives him 30 minutes to prepare and he just ignores the duel to surprise attack. He isn't about honor. "fairness" is a made up system created by those in power, and only works in their advantage. When it's to their advantage, you must fight fair, but then they'll massacre civilians with dummy weapons. There is no use obeying their rules.!<

[IBO S1]>!I like the idea that he already took some damage from the fighting. He lost the use of an arm. They undermined it by making it a disability that only works while he isn't piloting Gundam which is hilarious, but it does showcase the cost for winning the fight against the Not-Psycho Gundam!<

As far as Char Clones, McGillis does an amazing job. He most reminds me of Char's Counterattack Char, a morally complex liar. Who with his right hand would tell you that he has to save the world and with his left hand be totally consumed with obtaining power, and you never know which side of him is the real truth. He's an utter bastard and he better die in S2, but god I want to see more of him. He didn't do nearly enough.

If I had to put a weak link it's probably Kudelia. There is a lot of talk about this Maiden of Revolution and her dream of Mars independence but it's hard to buy into any of that. Even her speech at the end is like "Don't be evil, choose to be good instead" and that is supposed to inspire people.

Atra fairs better because she only cares about one thing; her endgame poly relationship. It's a more understandable goal, so it's easier for me to empathize with. I like the way she tries to protect Kudelia. It's not a rivalry, it's her boyfriend's girlfriend. I don't know if the other two have gotten the message though...

I was surprised S1 was so self contained. No cliffhanger or hook for season 2. If this was the entire show I'd be pretty satisfied.

In the English dub, they say "human debris" 20 times an episode. I don't know if the Japanese equivalent sounds equally unnatural to the Japanese.

Before GWitch, I would say IBO is the go to for people new to Gundam, because it dropped the who "UC but an alternate universe and look at our Char and our Newtypes" and made its own thing.

Clearly GWitch is the best entry point, now.

I feel like it's much easier to attribute auteur status to a film's writer/director than to someone who is just a director. The argument that the vision of a film is at least partially the vision of its screenwriter is too strong.

I dunno, I have been known to talk about films as primarily a part of a director's body of work. Ultimately I do know a lot of what goes into creating a film is the vision of their collaborators. In some ways, though, I do think it's good shorthand because directors often collaborate with the same directors of photography, casting directors, costume designers, etc. or at the very least they have tastes with regards to the sensibilities of the kinds of people they hire into those roles. In that sense, a director's vision can still create a coherent body of work based on what kinds of screenwriters they make the choice to work with.

But the other issue is that I don't even know what 'auteur' even counts as any more. I like Tarantino but I also when his writing is directed by someone else.

re: modern math education

There's a youtube channel by a mathematician whose content is mostly /r/askmath posts asking "am I an idiot or is my kid's teacher an idiot"

Apparently, they teach A x B as A groups of B items. And to understand this, you are expected to group up items in this way, with physical items, or drawing, or whatever.

If you just put down 6 for 3x2, you get it wrong. If you forget the definition, WHICH WE ALL KNOW DOESN'T MATTER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES and draw two groups of three you get it wrong. If you are suppposed to draw a 2D array, is it 2 rows of 3 or 3 rows of 2? Who knows. Should have paid better attention in class.

The crazy thing? It's all technically correct. It's not just new new new math child psychologists mucking up education. Multipliers and multiplicands are different, although I couldn't tell you how. And I couldn't tell you why, outside of designing computer chips to perform multiplication.

Says who? Says Euclid. Back in bumfuck B.C. Multiplication has always like this.

What makes this even more infuriating is that because it's commutative, sometimes flipping the order makes it significantly easier to solve. Forcing kids to think in rigid definitions like this and saying everything else is wrong is fundamentally to their detriment, I think.

Priscilla was a fun girl. And Mirai is nice to see. Uika was interesting, but also not close to Mujica girl I liked most. Rena is probably the biggest surprise.

That is a good Watanare ship. The Maebashi ship is a good one also.

Not a single share in OP or EDs. Though the Anne OP was good. And I thought you'd had the Rock Lady ED.

Clevatess was an interesting show. And I'm glad to see Maebashi make it.

Mirai Days and Danmachi were great. One day we'll get more Danmachi for more of that story.

Ubel Blatt is a show I forgot I watched this year. But those are some good picks for trainwrecks.

Medaka isn't low enough. It needs to be front and center for how bad it was.

There's no reason for the suit to be assless if they're just scanning. You could have a zipper, open to scan, then close. That way nobody can sneak a scan, fake your poohole, and steal your ride.

If you want to go assless with the costume design, it needs to make in-universe sense. Maybe the robot has to be controlled via the clenching and unclenching of anal muscles on a rod or joystick of some sort.
