Is this series good outside of the ecchi? I don't really mind that part if it has a good story. Animation looks great.

It's a pretty solid battle shonen but the ecchi is baked into the concept and plot, so you can't really ignore it. Really, it's 50% action and 50% ecchi.
Season 1 of the anime wasn't great but it was serviceable. The manga is definitely much better. So far season 2's anime premiere was an improvement over season 1 at least!
