My Thoughts on Hero Without A Class: Who Even Needs Skills!?
Mid is a peculiar term in anime discourse because there's a class of people who use it to refer to anything popular, either because they're genuine contrarians or they're just trying to get a rise out of people, or use it to refer to terrible anime, seemingly not realizing that Mid is short for Middle, as in middle of the road, average. I think this is an anime that a lot of people would also refer to as mid if they've seen...honestly any amount of anime, you don't even hae to be genre savvy. It's just bad. Stop me if you've heard this before. A bland, boring male MC has no ability, but he trains and somehow becomes stronger than everyone else in the series with just hard work, with little to no in depth explanation, proving everyone's discriminaiton wrong. It's actually kind of impressive how little this anime attempts to give us anything remotely unique or interesting. Unlike some bad light novel fantasy anime that try to at least present some interseting ideas even if they do nothing with them, this one can't even be bothered to do that. What makes it worse is that almost the entirety of the anime is a tournament, but there's no plot or personal stakes to make it ineteresting, which all good tournament arcs have. Even Dragon Ball understood that, and it was the one that created those tropes and is fairly basic by today's standards.

But from what you’re writing, for me such anime are comfort food. I can chill, see some OP MC get some justice or win and be done with it. Only thing that gets on my nerves with these "mid" anime is the fact the MC can’t seem to have male members in his team / friend group.
Most of the anime is him at boring ass magic school.
This series was legit horrible.
And then it goes and wastes literally all of it. A comic relief side character that was part of the promo art vanishing from the series entirely at the halfway point never to even be mentioned again. The love interest being sidelined for the rest of the show, not taking part in his adventures at all, with the MC seemingly forgetting she even exists. Transforming into a goofy magic school series complete with over the top children sidekicks. The MC's previously seemingly blunt and open and not awkward or stumbling personality, which seemed interesting and unusual for this sort of show, ending up being revealed to just be him being an actual psychopath. Not in the violent or criminal sense, but in the clinical sense where he does not seem to possess normal human emotions or actually care about anything at all. Nothing phases him, nothing seems to matter to him, other people and relationships don't seem to register to him as actual things of value. He just wants to get stronger because it's anime and anime MC's in action fantasy shows are supposed to want to Get Stronger^^TM and he doesn't even seem to care that much about that, only going through the motions because that's what kind of show this is.
I can't remember the last time I saw an anime with such whiplash in having an interesting idea behind its characters and their relationships only to stumble and fail to deliver on every single one of them.
It wasn't bad early on. It looked like it almost might be decent.
I often end up watching a meh show for a while if it's inoffensive. Something inoffensive to watch before going to bed, if I have nothing else. But, then due to it's bland nature I lose the motivation to actually finish the 12 or so episodes. Rather than bland blah, I rewatch an episode of something I actually enjoyed (say the Mangaka show this last season) that has some delightful characters and is chill.
It's your typical "I don't have the thing that everyone else in the world does but I'm still insanely op because I worked really hard and nobody else works hard"
It's just a temu version of Chivalry of a Failed Knight or Wand and Wistoria with none of the tension or depth and significantly less interesting characters.
The side characters that come and go exist merely to show the absurdity of the MCs situation and emphasize his abnormality. None overstay their welcome which is a boon in an entertainment medium where many characters in many shows stay far longer than they need to. That in turn feeds into the pacing, this has been one of the few shows recently with no dead moments, its moved from plot point to plot point with lightning alacrity while its contemporaries burn time on filler conversations and hanging scenes that add nothing.
The show as a whole, like its main character dunks on those around it and moves on with little concern but for its own trajectory.

And then there are the characters. Arel was just so damned indifferent about everything. I think he was shown as smiling maybe five times during the four hour runtime. Dude couldn't even get excited over a tournament win. If I wanted to watch someone deadpan while facerolling opponents, I'd rewatch Instant Death Ability. And the side characters are mostly one-dimensional, particularly after the focus shifts to the City of Magic where the most filled-out character was a literal skeleton of their former self. Not to mention that after Raina got diverted into her own Way Of The Housewife sidequest, the only character in the series that was actually mildly interesting to me was reduced to absolutely nothing worth a damn.
It was just bad. And I have no qualms about saying that this was the worst anime of Fall 2025.
Overall the anime was just something lighthearted and unserious, which is fine. It just could have been better if he actually cared about other characters.
