Its the Fate series. Grand Order is just the mobile spinoff. The series started with the Stay Night visual novel. Start with that, or the Studio DEEN adaptation.
Timely_Vanilla_52392026-01-09 16:43
Thank you finally needed a proper answer!
Lil_sopa692026-01-09 16:46
What he said. Read the visual novel Fate Stay Night. Fate grand order is a gacha game with some anime adaptations for some arcs. You can get into it individually but it's recommended to read Stay Night first anyways.
peppinotempation2026-01-09 16:52
Fate stay night is finally on steam now too, haven’t replayed it yet but looks good!
TheDopplegamer2026-01-09 16:52
Just to elaborate, The reason you want to start with the DEEN adaption: the Fate/Stay Night VN is divided between 3 routes, Stay Night, UBW, and Heavens Feel. Even though its a branching storyline, the 3 routes are unlocked and meant to be experienced in that order, for narrative reasons.
The DEEN adaption is the only anime that covers the first route. Then there's the Ufotable adaptation of UBW, and the Heavens Feel Movies.
There's also Fate/Zero, my personal favorite, which chronologically takes place first, but it'll spoil Fate Stay Night, so watch that afterwards.
Aeonyyx2026-01-09 16:41
Read the VNs
Timely_Vanilla_52392026-01-09 16:43
Im sorry I'm new to anime and stuff but what is a VN?
TheDopplegamer2026-01-09 16:44
Visual Novel: Basically a book, in video game format. Will usually have branching storylines
Timely_Vanilla_52392026-01-09 16:50
Is it the mobile game that's the vn?
Skyllama2026-01-09 16:52
No but yes, the mobile game’s presentation of the story is basically *a* VN but it’s not *the* VN people are talking about. The first VN (which is the thing you should read first) is Fate/Stay Night, which recently got a re-release on Steam. The mobile game is best left for after you’ve at least read all 3 routes of Stay Night, and best enjoyed after reading/watching more like the Fate/Zero anime (watch this only after reading Stay Night)
Aeonyyx2026-01-09 17:02
Here’s a list: https://www.reddit.com/u/PurpleDeco/s/ALRKmB30dM
Aeonyyx2026-01-09 16:47
I wouldn’t recommend starting with the anime you should read the Visual Novels, you’ll be robbing yourself of one of the best stories ever told
ManagerHot87092026-01-09 21:58
Don't pay heed to their VN bs.
ONPige2026-01-09 16:43
Do you want to watch Fate? Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night by Deen, Fate/UBW by UFOtable, Fate/Heaven's Feel movies, then whatever you want.
Timely_Vanilla_52392026-01-09 16:44
Whatever is in order
Nomar_952026-01-09 16:43
are you talking about Grand Order specifically, or the Fate series as a whole?
For the Grand Order adaptations, it's:
* First Order
* Camelot (2 films)
* Babylonia (don't forget episode 0 first)
* Solomon
Timely_Vanilla_52392026-01-09 16:44
Thank you! I don't necessarily want to play the games but I really want to watch the anime!
Delisches2026-01-09 16:51
The Grand Order anime is made for fans of the game as they only adapt some fan favorite arcs and skip the rest. If you want the full story you have to play the game.
Skyllama2026-01-09 17:02
If you don’t want to play the game you’ll be missing around 70% of the story, for Part 1 of the first 7 singularities and the 8th finale only the 6th-8th have been adapted to anime and of which the 6th and 8th abridge quite a bit. (Granted the first 5 singularities range from bad to mid) Additionally literally none of Part 2 of the story, which is generally considered the best part of the story, has been adapted
MumrikDK2026-01-09 18:34
The FGO animes are the clearly weaker Fate material.
Angriest_Stranger2026-01-09 16:52
The Fate series is a massive rabbit hole of confusing watch orders. Start with Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works. If you really want to continue after that, just Google Fate series watch order. I gave up after that. It's a mess.
n080dy1232026-01-09 18:22
It's honestly not even that bad, the only reason it's confusing is because people get in their head that there *is* a watch order at all. It's just the three entries you mentioned, the strict chronology for the FGO adaptations, and everything else is freestyle.
MokonaModokiES2026-01-09 16:53
viceversa. The animes are made from the games and are only a couple of the popular arcs. they skipped most arcs and isnt even fully finiahed only covering the ending arcs of part 1.
Skyllama2026-01-09 16:59
Fate/Grand Order has a lot of fanservice (in the “characters showing up” way not the lewd way) so is best experienced after you consume some other Fate media. I’d recommend doing the following as a minimum
Read Fate/Stay Night (all 3 routes, available on Steam, alternatively you can watch the anime for each route but the only adaptation of the first route isn’t very good and some hardcore VN fans have problems with the movie adaptations of the third route, for the second route just watch the Ufotable anime)
Watch Fate/Zero anime
If you have the patience for it, play Fate/Grand Order yourself, you can honestly skip all the story after the intro chapter until you get to Singularity 6, Camelot, and start reading from there. If you don’t want to read/play it there was a two part movie adaptation of Camelot which was pretty good, although you might be a little lost on the characters or why they’re there, an anime series of Babylonia, and an OVA for the last part of Part 1 of the story. Sadly what (imo) is the best part of the story of FGO, Part 2, has no adaptations so you’d either have to read it yourself or watch someone else read it on YouTube
clone692026-01-09 17:27
Grand Order has a few anime adaptations, one is the prologue, another is an original story between the end of part 1 of the story and the Interlude before part 2, another is an anime adaptation of the story of chapter 7 of the main story, and then a movie adapting chapter 6. Then there are several short gag episodes, including a Carnival Phantasm parody focusing on FGO instead of Fate and Tsukihime like the original Carnival Phantasm.
So in short, the Grand Order adaptations are mainly for fanservice, if you haven't played the game, you will end up more confused. Watching the original show/reading they original VN doesn't really help because the missing context is from the mobile game.
sagevallant2026-01-09 17:33
So, the important information is that "Fate" is a franchise comprised of a couple of main continuities that mostly aren't related to one another and then some side projects that are also often not related to each other.
The things that say "Grand Order" on them are the continuity of the mobile game, and imo are just... not... great... if you aren't a fan of the game. Based on what I have seen from people that are fans of the game. I didn't find them to be very good from the perspective of someone that never played the game. The whole Grand Order stuff does not come with a recommendation from me.
The original universe is Fate Stay Night, which is a VN which has three routes. The original adaptation of Fate Stay Night by Studio DEEN has some of the weaknesses of many VN adaptations of the age. Largely, it does the main route aside from episodes 17 through the first half of 19 where it does a piss poor job of adapting the biggest moments of the other two routes. Between that and the age of the anime, many people recommend just skipping this one and going straight to the Unlimited Bladeworks series. Not the movie, which adapts the same story in like 90 minutes and would be pretty confusing for anyone that isn't familiar with Fate Stay Night. General opinion is you can start with Unlimited Bladeworks the series and skip over the DEEN adaptation. It is made to be accessible without prior knowledge.
Once you're familiar with the general story, you can check out the Heaven's Feel movies which are pretty great. Not really made to be seen without some knowledge of the beginning of the story from the other routes as it fast forwards through the inciting incidents and explanations.
Fate Zero also ties into the main game by way of being a prequel. This one is divisive on when you should watch it. It was written as a prequel that assumes you know the original, so it spoils some stuff that would be twists in Fate Stay Night. But if you only want to watch one thing from the list, you don't need to know anything in advance going into this one and it is pretty much the best of Fate.
Otherwise, you have stuff loosely attached to one or more things or completely standalone. Fate Apocrypha and Fate Strange Fake break off from Fate Stay Night continuity around the Third Grail War I believe (with Stay Night being mainly concerned with the 5th War and Zero being the story of the 4th War). I don't think you need any prior knowledge to enjoy Apocrypha, but it's also kind of middling to good and I kind of disliked it the first time I watched it. The parts I hated don't drag on as much as I thought when I first went through and it has some genuinely great bits to it. They just picked the wrong main character. Strange Fake is pretty new to me, and I hear it has some tidbits and trivia that reward people who are more familiar with the whole of not just Fate but the entire Nasuverse, but I don't think that not knowing all of that will hurt my own enjoyment of it.
Most of whatever else says Fate in it is largely standalone or spinoffs of something.
Note that this is not an exhaustive list, it is mostly meant to address the two major continuities of Fate GO and Fate Stay Night.
Hot-Analysis-7692026-01-09 17:45
Well I've only watched fate zero, fate unlimited blade works, and fate apocrypha
Quiddity1312026-01-09 18:16
I've played a bit of Fate Grand Order, its a gacha mobile game that is very formulaic with its set up. Basically pick a party of 3 servants, do a battle, watch cut scenes, rince and repeat over and over again. Once you have enough of the game's currency equivalent try to obtain new servants to add to your group.
The anime adaptions jump all around the parts of the game. They adapted the start of the game, but then skipped like 4 or 5 main segments when it comes to the movies they created and the TV series. I actually never got far enough in the game to reach these later parts that they adapted.

Either Babylonia or Wandering/Paladin: Agateram. The order doesn't really matter, I think.

**Fate Zero** this is actually a prequel to Fate/Stay Night, but is meant to be watched after as it's a prequel **sequel**. This is pretty much the end of the *main* fate series so everything after this is watchable generally whenever.
**Today's Menu for the Emiya Family** (cute short 13min episodes with really nice art style from Ufotable. Features the Fate Stay Night cast. Last like 3-4 minutes of each episode is about a food recipe) Not a mandatory watch.
\- [Season 1](https://www.myanimelist.net/anime/37033)
**Lord El Melloi II** Best watched after Fate Zero.
**Fate Extra** - This anime is a loose adaptation of the Fate Extra game. It adapts a route that does not actually happen in it. Not the greatest adaptation, but a unique one. It's animated by Studio SHAFT, having a very Madoka-iy look. Like Fate (Season 1 is the first batch of episodes, the last 3 came out later due to production issues)
\- [Season 1](https://myanimelist.net/anime/33047)
\- [Last 3 Episodes](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37651)
Also the game is receiving a remake coming out next year. [Trailer here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJNxMqkgThs) (note it was delayed to 2026) I'd personally suggest seeing it after playing the game at this stage since it's so close.
**Fate Grand Order** An adaptation of the Fate/Grand Order gacha game. It's not the best but it generally serves its purpose. Some of it will be way better than the others. First Order is the prologue of the game, and then skips 5 arcs to Camelot so it's gonna be a bit of a jarring jump. Just keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Not totally 1:1 but if you've played the Persona games think of FGO as palaces on a world level.

\-- [Moonlight Lostroom](https://myanimelist.net/anime/36915) (can honestly skip this ova. it is insanely confusing if you haven't played FGO.)
**Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya**
(this anime is ultra controversial, there are elementary school girls tongue kissing in it. A shame because it's **actually** a really good story. You can skip if you'd like. There's two really great characters that make an appearance in it that unfortunately don't have any other current anime appearances. They will show up in Carnival Phantasm at the bottom of this list, which is a gag anime.)

(For Fate Illya you can skip the OVAs and shorts. While there is some comedy that ISNT attached to lolicon bait, pretty much all of it is. The only one I wouldn't skip is Movie 1 OVA Sakuras Room)
**Fate Strange Fake** Fate Strange Fake is a love letter to the Fate series from Ryohgo Narita, author most famous for Baccano and Durarara (both excellent series with excellent anime adaptations). Strange Fake is going to start airing January 3rd 2026. If you're wondering why I put it down here, it's because it contains references big and small to pretty much everything above. You can technically watch it after Apocrypha, or El Melloi or even Zero, but you'd be missing some really cool references. It's a story that's greatly enhanced by knowledge, as much of it as possible.
\- [Episode 0: Whispers of Dawn](https://www.myanimelist.net/anime/53127) (this will most likely be aired alongside episode 1 on Jan 3rd if I'm hearing correctly)
\- [Season 1](https://myanimelist.net/anime/55830/Fate_strange_Fake) (starting January 3rd 2026)
**Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners**
Garden of Sinners is Nasu's first work, and these movies are PHENOMENAL. Animated by ufotable. You'll be immensely surprised how beautiful the animation is given they were releasing from 2007 to 2013. They're ordered in release order, Should be noted the stories themselves are chronologically all over the place but it's intended.
\--[Manners Movies](https://myanimelist.net/anime/23697) (these stop motion shorts played in theaters to tell the audience to mind their manners. Very cute. I suggest interweaving them with each movie.)

\- [Movie 9: Future Gospel](https://myanimelist.net/anime/14807)
\- [Future Gospel: Extra Chorus](https://myanimelist.net/anime/22763)
**Mahoyo/Witch on the Holy Night** (Technically prequel to Tsukihime, leads me to believe Ufotable will do a Tsukihime anime adaptation afterwards)
\- [Movie](https://myanimelist.net/anime/50668) (not out yet, but this is most probably where I'd put it.)
[Here's a trailer.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML10KNGEif8)
**Carnival Phantasm** - Time for the treats. Funny gag section of pretty much all of the Fate content you just watched. So many memes. Includes Tsukihime characters, but don't worry about it. Tsukihime will for sure get an anime adaptation at some point (totally not coping)

\- [Season 1](https://myanimelist.net/anime/38959)

**Fate Apocrypha** Usually the first spinoff I recommend after El Melloi.
\- [Season 1](https://myanimelist.net/anime/34662)

You could if you wanted to watch Fate 2006 at this point, as there's literally nothing else to watch but I'd play the VN for Fate route or wait hopefully for a ufotable adaptation.
