but if you liked it for the drama, how about Turkey from last year? (the opening ep can catch people off-guard, sure, but the characters do grow)
Bocchi is hyper anxious "girl-failure" trying to find her courage to play music on the big stage and break free of the constaints her mind puts on herself.
Eizoken is about a group of girls who team up to create an anime club and story wise leans into explaining the process of creating an anime along with its ups and downs.
Carole & Tuesday is about 2 girls finding a place they belong in the world and creating music because its their passion in life. Out of the three I mentioned this one has the most emotional weight in my opinion and is truly a love letter to music. Each episode is named after a song and during the commercial bump they even show the actual record single with all its details (some examples: Fire and Rain by James Taylor, River Deep, Mountain High by Tina Turner, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Neil Young ((PS, I recommend listening to the episode title song when you hit the commercial break spot, many fit the plot of the episode beautifully)). Many musician characters are references to real life artsit like Whitney Houston, Ariana Grande, and David Bowie. Its also very immersive in that real brands like Instagram, Gibson, and other brands related to music industry are mentioned instead of making corny but similar fake names. If you can't already tell, I think you know which of these 3 is my favorite. Last detail, there are some actual artist cameos as well like ThunderCat and Denzel Curry.
I liked this one but it had more Yuru camp vibes (but climbing instead).
A place further than the universe is more adventure than a pure slice of life.
It's unique, as most cddct are either comedy or slice of life. Also, no plot goal.
Two recent titles that he worked on that are worth your attention are Girls Band Cry and Medalist. GBC is another original fully by him. Medalist is an adaptation, but follows a similar focus and tension of characters doing things that others didn't think possible.
Bocchi the Rock
Yuru Camp
Akebi's Sailor Uniform
Comic Girls
Sound Euphonium
Asteroid in Love
Do It Yourself!
Non Non Biyori
Sakura Quest
Tari Tari
All of these are under the cute girls doing cute things genre with hints of drama/coming of age
