86 - mecha anime where non-blondes are oppressed and sent to the front lines to fight against this supernatural mecha empire invading super system. Trailer should convince you to watch it
Itazura na kiss - romcom anime where a girl moves in with her crush. She’s a little ditsy he’s very smart comedy ensues. Older series so you know its naturally got depth
Nurarihyon no mago - story about a boy who is 1/4 demon so you can only turn into a demon at night and he’s the son of the yakuza who are actually a demon family. But he hides his identity does not want to be a demon story is about how he ultimately accepts his true blood. If it had been released today, it would be at the top end of the ranks. 2 seasons. Great soundtrack.
Kanon - 2006 anime back when a 12 or 24 episode series could actually kick ass. Just watch it
Sakurasou no pet kanojo - rom/com about a dorm we are very smart kids reside. Main character has to manage a girl who can’t do anything on her own. Actually has a ton of value and depth and despite not having another season, it leaves you with a good feeling
Full Metal Panic - army boy has to protect a girl. Straight up comedy and action. Mecha series
Natsume’s book of friends- boy who can see spirits/demons etc moves to the rural town, where his great grandmother used to live, and there he finds her notebook that has all the names of spirits that she beat. Having the name of the spirit allows you to control them and so the spirits hunt him down to get their name back and he employed the help of Madara a very powerful demon cat. Bromance ensues. SOLID summer series. Has many seasons.
Not sure if I’d call this a hidden gem, but when it first aired, it had no streaming site, so it wasn’t seen by too many people. Crunchyroll later picked it up so it has gotten more popular over time. But there is a chance you may have missed it. I think it was a really good watch. It is full CGI and does get a little getting used to. But I think it tells a really good story with amazing characters.
Why would that be sad, seems pretty rational.
Apocalypse Hotel is the least popular anime i rated a 10/10 in 2025. I recommend it, but i have no idea what you like.
plus it's only a five episode investment
- Zankyou no terror (came out at the same time as Tokyo ghoul)
- Kokoro Connect (at the same time as SAO)
- Josee, the tiger and the fish (from the creator of Your name, but didn't get the same hype)
- Gatchaman Crowds (I just don't hear about it anymore)
