I'd like to add Attack on Titan as well. A personal favorite of mine, medium length, and a completed story.
While My Hero Academia, Hunter x Hunter, and Demon Slayer are popular choices, they are quite long and a much more significant investment to plop down and watch. As a newcomer, I'd recommend starting with shorter anime to get the feel for it. Anime are usually aired for a season's length (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter), usually 12 episodes per season. My recommendation is to browse the anime catalog and select an anime you might like that has about 1-3 seasons worth of content. A shorter anime is a lot easier to watch to completion and devote time to than a 1000+ episodes of One Piece or Naruto.
If you do go for any long anime, don't force yourself to watch it. It doesn't matter if X amount of people say it's good or Y amount of people say it gets better by Z season. If you don't like it and think it's a chore to keep watching, then stop and watch something else.
Do you have a favorite fictional genre or trope? What non-anime hobbies do you indulge in? Anime covers many premises.
Some animes are for literal babies. Some for elementary schoolers. Some for highschoolers. Some are aimed at adults even.
Within anime, there is every type of story you can think of. Some much more common/frequent than others.
If you are into Romance and Horror, I'd encourage you to try out "The Summer When Hikaru Died", which features a pretty engaging "couple" and a primordial/evil Eldritch horror. I'd claim that it is for adults.
If an action + Eldritch anime sounds fun for you, "Made in Abyss" is the anime "dark-souls" with a fun orchestral soundtrack. Fun for teens and above.
And if you want horror as in "edgy urban legend creepy-pasta": While "Dark Gathering" can feel underwhelming, I figure that it is still worth trying out.
"Legend of the Galactic Heroes". I'm not necessarily recommending it, just mentioning it so that you can see a very different style of story. (Feel free to continue/drop/leave pending)
Be aware that there are hundreds of anime with very different tones, executions, and flavors.
We can't help ourselves.
Would you believe me if I told you that I rewatch the last scene of "Medalist" episode 1 everytime I recommend the anime? I'm cursed.
I am also madly in love with "Dungeon Meshi" (a must watch) and "World Trigger" (I don't recommend it, don't even look it up! This one is only for videogame fans and has an upcoming reboot).
Sigh.
I wish I had more anime to watch. I'm basically waiting for Frieren season 2 to release in a few days.
If you don't like it don't force yourself to watch it. There is thousands of anime shows out there with all kinds of varying art styles, animation styles, settings, plots and run time. You will almost certainly find something that fits your taste better.
This is especially true for longer shows like One Piece since OP fans will insist that it will get good 400 episodes in.
some of my recommendations after watching death note you'll have urge to watch more mystery thriller ones
erased(my go to recommendation for beginners)
another
summertime rendering(some people find it confusing but i loved it)
tomodachi game
oshi no ko
classroom of elite (starting seasons are good)
link click
steins gate (not beginner friendly id say you'll have to push through 11-12 episodes to experience peakk)
if you want to tryy some romance animes( adding a few sad ones in it too)
kaguya sama love is war (this is peak rom com)
horimiya
my love story with yamada kun lvl999

some generally good animes
dororo
hell's paradise

spy x family
akame ga kill!(be prepared before watching it)
apothecary diaries
violet evergarden
frieren
made in abyss(idk if it's beginner friendly though it is not what you this it is)
idk what genre are you into soo yeah these are general recommendations based on what i watch
The ones you’re thinking about next are all solid picks too, especially if you want action/strong characters.
If you want a few more beginner-friendly recommendations:
• Attack on Titan (intense, story-driven)
• Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (great balance of action, story, and emotion)
• Jujutsu Kaisen (modern, fast-paced, very approachable)
• Your Name (movie, emotional and beautiful)
And if later on you’re curious about anime that are a bit heavier or less beginner-friendly but absolutely incredible:
• Neon Genesis Evangelion (psychological, emotional, very influential)
• Steins;Gate (slow at first, but the payoff is amazing)
• Serial Experiments Lain (experimental, philosophical)
• Monster (slow burn, mature thriller)
As for the others you listed, those anime have more in common with one another compared to Death Note and are also worth watching, IMO. I will say, however, that MHA and Hunter x Hunter are on the longer side, with both having over 100 episodes.
Demon Slayer is beginner friendly. Mostly inoffensive, exceptional visuals, likeable main character, and flashy fights if you're into action.
A new anime that I would strongly recommend is Gachiakuta.
As far as other recs go, I would say:
If you're into a lot of action and flashy fights then:
- Solo Leveling
- Jujutsu Kaisen
- Black Clover (170 eps)
If you're into action/adventure:
- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
- Frieren
If you enjoy Death Note:
- Parasyte (this is on the gory side, so depends on your threshold)
- Code Geass (if you appreciate the strategy/cleverness of characters)
