there's the VN adaptation, the mobile game adaptation, the psp game adaptation, the adaptation of many spinoff medias, and then you got the parodies and the lighter spinoffs too
[](#crazedlaugh)
If they want to get the full picture, they can always come back to the series later. And then there isn’t even *that* much needed to understand most of the references:
- Fate/Zero (both seasons)
- Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files
Pretty much, and if a newcomer finds themselves confused, that's how it's intended. Knowing more won't change that feeling.
>there isn’t even that much needed to understand most of the references:
There's technically more, some of them aren't even from the Fate franchise (Narita knows how to squeeze every reference), but to its credit, the references don't stand out as something out of place, it all just works together.
But people should probably learn enough about the Holy Grail War and sorts as the story in Fate/SF progresses further. Also, it does keep things a little mysterious.
"Oh Lady Summery Kana showed up in the Honkai collab, she is relevant for a minor arc in lost belt 828238 of FGO and you will ruin your experience when you see her in the background, you won't understand the impact unless you first read the VN, watch the Stay Night anime, watch Apocrypha because her mentor appear there, then play all of FGO until lost belt 738, then Pause and read Nasu introductory statement in the short story book Fate BigHatWitch about her faction, now you can go back to Lost Bel and FINALLY you can play the Honkai collab"
I am honestly not even exaggerating, the strange fake discourse was like that "You won't have the knowledge of who that character is"
*Show goes out of the way to show the character aura farming, establishing his personality/character with actions, cutting people hands immediately and dropping a nuke in the earth*
Yup, sometimes the graph they create for various anime watch orders (such as Gundam) make things more convoluted than it actually is.
Hell, even Nekomonogatari kuro technically happens before bakemonogatari and is supposed to be watched after, so Monogatari series really is not the right franchise to be confused about non-chronological watch order.
And the episode about pollen allergy was just incredible - it contains the whole gamut of city apocalypse scenarios.
I'm not done yet, but I'm suprised I don't see this series talked about in any topic here.
If you're looking for an overarching plot, Hataraku BLACK (spinoff) does have that!
But as you probably know, it's not exactly the same vibes/tone...
[](#spooked)
But since it's sunday, it's actually perfect for europe here.
Then I just saw the visual they released, missed that yesterday, and we have a new outfit? Big Hat Witch is a possibility now
This is the most marketable anime of this type ever, multiple seasons are a reality!
Not a source reader, but I'm pretty sure there'll be different outfits for almost every game, if not all of them. Which tbh I highly welcome. While I didn't particularly mind the maid outfits, I'm not a huge fan of that aethstetic in general, so I don't really need that to become part of the show's identity which would have happened if they wore maid outfits in every game.
If I enjoy next ep I will buy all the volumes, this seems to be a good series to read
[Hello, do I have the correct number to report heresy?](#hellopolice)
[Answer] >!They will have different outfits to fit the theme of each game.!<
Looking like the biggest new show of this season so far in japan, been some time since a not-well-known adaptation shot up this high in popularity after 1st ep
Did you see Champignon Witch? Luna probably got the biggest witch hat that I’ve ever seen.
A thing to bare in mind is BAFTA have an entry fee (they're an arts charity and that's used to fund the awards ceremony and other activities) which for this year was £5,500 for best animated feature. The animated longlist has a range between 5 and 8 with a shortlist of 3/4 (no clue if it's like the Oscars where number of nominations determines list length).
Turns out it’s definitely not the most boring witch show this season.

In his latest video on the Worst Anime of 2025, Mother's Basement remarks that the budget and production allocated to *The Shiunji Family Children* make it a more frustrating watch, since that time and money could have been better spent polishing up some of the more impressive (but still a little undercooked) titles of 2025, an opinion I've seen thrown around more and more in the community.
Now, while I get where he's coming from, a part of me does think this is a surprisingly reckless opinion for someone like Geoff to be throwing around. I mean maybe a year ago I would have agreed (and if I'm being honest kind of still do). However, I have at least warmed up to it being a slippery slope. Ignoring that... that's not quite how money works, this logic seems to be weaponized by a lot of very vocal... people online who will leverage it at things that aren't just the latest polished turd. I mean the trope of "they didn't need to go this hard on a slice of life show" has kind of been a meme for a while, but more recently people have gotten awfully hostile about it. It gets thrown around beyond just "overproduced slop" like *Shiunji*, as I've seen it similarly thrown at *YAIBA* or *Mushoku Tensei* or any other show that has a half decent production to it that the person making the comments didn't like, to the point of derailing any conversation on these shows to talk about. So, to reiterate what I said earlier, it does seem kind of reckless for someone with as much influence like Geoff to make such unprofessional comments.
Though I kind of want to poll the room and see what others think about the debate around "reallocating resources to better shows", what merit there might be to it, or if its a discussion that should be nipped in the bud whenever possible.
that basically what he said too. His biggest complaint was that it didn't even dare comit to being an incest romcom, so it's just a complete waste of a series.
Honestly that's a feeling everyone has at least once, even if it makes no sense. If you've seen clips of well-animated scenes from slice of life anime, or from silly-looking franchises like Umamusume or Precure, captioned with "they didn't need to go this hard," it's literally a relatively benign exemple of that
I would honestly rather slop get good production than not, since the latter case just creates a show that was DoA and a waste of time and money overall. I mean "overproduced slop" has created some absolute dimes over the years such as *Onimai*, so I can't really be one to judge.
I mean there kinda is but that resource isn't production budget it is animators.
*Shiunji Children* having less animators isn’t gonna fix *Kowloon Generic Romance*’s story or give *GQuuuuuuX* more episodes. You can ax *Mono*, put a gun to the animator’s heads and say “Make *Sakamoto Days*” and it’s not gonna necessarily result in a *Solo Leveling* style production.
A lot of top talent is highly specialized to the kind of show they’re known for. Someone working on *Shuinji* is not necessarily gonna make for a great action animator on OPM S3. Not to mention that most animators can’t just be moved around between studios at the whims of the audience *and* also the fact that they’re human beings that have some degree of agency.
Art is best when the artists *want* to make it. If someone at the top is passionate about the project, they will go through hell or high water to get it the production it deserves. You can’t just shuffle around top talent like money and assume everything will go right. There’s so much that goes into it that I think it’s best to just let things be and celebrate the successes when they happen.
When you realize how many cogs are involved in anime production, the fact the industry exists at all is honestly a miracle. I think it’s better to celebrate those that do win the lottery and get dream adaptations than to necessarily get bent over “should have beens”.
But at least that way it wouldn't be X, which is a rather promising alternative if you hate X with a passion
Like, more production has mostly never really actively made a show worse. Like I don't like *Solo Leveling*, but I'll also admit that without its stellar production I would absolutely not like it a whole lot more.
Like from the recent Sakugablog post about Apo Hotel:
> Takenaka goes as far as saying that he (Izumi Takemoto) was key in assembling the team to begin with; veterans were delighted about the rare opportunity to draw Takemoto’s characters, while younger artists were drawn to someone whose style felt nostalgic but in no way outdated.
Or like when people complain about poor original anime while Tetsuro Araki mentioned that the endgame for lots of people is directing an original anime in this [interview](https://youtu.be/BCSva9VI3MQ?t=1517). And that the opportunity to direct one of those projects with Guilty Crown was a major reason for why he left Madhouse.
Think you'll see the same with adaptations/remakes that people would love to work on because [they're fans themselves](https://youtu.be/KK3-6oOCZN8?t=407).
It's a job of course and bills need to be paid, but if people have the luxury I do think they'll look for projects that excite/challenge them. Hard to be mad about that, even when I don't care about the end product.
It ultimately is just a lot of people complaining about things they just don’t know about.
*"Aww that's a lot of work, I'll let someone else be the change I want to see in the world"*

Still against my better judgement I might take the leap myself this year. There is a show that I think deserves a rewatch later this year and if noone else is gonna do it I'll have to but also I would probably want to do one prior as a test run and actually have a shortlist in mind of shows to choose from for that.
[](#curious)
>actually have a shortlist in mind of shows to choose from
[curious about that too](#Curious)
(If I was to host a rewatch it'd probably be for something like Killing Bites or Kakegurui just so I can gush over it some more hah)
What could it be?
[](#chitosesmug 'not this one I just needed a smug comment face')
>[curious about that too](#Curious)
I'd most likely pick one out of
+ Kageki Shoujo
+ Slow Loop
+ The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace
Would probably put up a poll and let people decide.
I might actually considering participating in this one, it's one of those shows I dropped simply because I was overwhelmed by too many shows... (Just like I am in this season, was in the previous one and will be in all the next ones as well)!
(But don't let that influence your pick hah, I'm not that reliable when it comes to rewatches. The only I've ever followed religiously was the Prison School one!)
Also wow I'm old...
98% of shows have 0 rewatch.
Maybe 1.9% have 1, and 0.1% more than one.
They released Episode 14 today, but the 13th episode still wasn’t available on their site. They must’ve also noticed this, because Episode 14 has now been removed. Meaning that I can watch neither episodes right now.
[](#slowgrin)
Index has a quite interesting sci/magical world.
Index is very divisive and I didn’t watch it. S3 is said to be a terrible adaptation especially.
Keep it that way. Season 3 is honestly unwatchable.

Oshi no Ko: +164k
Dandadan: +100k
Solo Leveling: +87k
Hell's Paradise: +80k
**Sentenced to be a Hero: +77k**
Frieren: +64k

Kaoru Hana: +50k
Wistoria: +49k
Wind Breaker: +48k

I am also super tempted to try out Polar Opposites if the word of mouth tomorrow is good. Lapin Track has a great track record (Shoshimin, Undead Murder Farce) and the PVs were incredible. Plus gyarus are the best.
That's my #1 this season!
Highly recommending you check it out (I think it's the kind of show that you'll know 100% whether you like it or not after 1 episode)
> The big show that everyone's watching, but wasn't doing anything for me.
That show is Tamon for me this season. Never felt such a disconnect with the popular aqradt opinion for seasonals than I did for this show. Sure, not *everyone* here is watching it, but everyone who does is going crazy for it and I just can't see it. It looks shiny but that's where it already stops for me.
Personally I do not see that at all;
Sentenced to be a hero seemed to focus SO much on mindless action.
Clevatess (even as early as episode 1) was focused heavily on the characters.
And well, this part is personal preferences, but the bits of Sentenced that DID focus on the characters, well... I didn't like any of them. Guy is needlessly broody/grumpy, but just generally none of them were interesting to me. Nor was the conflict or the stakes.
To put it this way... Watching this or watching 'epic action scenes' from S5 of a show I'm not watching, felt exactly the same. It had nothing for me except action/visuals, and I rarely care about that.
Clevatess, even as early as Ep1, I cared about the characters, the world, the 'grim' was done a lot better imho, etc..
All this to say: I don't know if others made the connection (Clevatess/Sentenced), but to me, they're night and day!
>That show is Tamon for me this season.
I dropped that one too.
[](#urbansmile)
I have a bunch of reasons to drop this one too, but just once would've sufficed: A big % of the comedy is of the "LOUD = FUNNY" variety, and I never liked that.
(And I thought the guy was shit, and the girl didn't inspire much either).
-----
**Maybe** I could've given Sentenced more of a chance, but I'm already watching 13 shows and there's more to come (2 guaranteed watch, and 2 'probably') so when I'm looking at 15-17 shows, something needs to 'hook me' for me to keep it, and these two shows had nothing for me.

Watched [an isekai episode](https://myanimelist.net/anime/60460/Hell_Mode__Yarikomizuki_no_Gamer_wa_Hai_Settei_no_Isekai_de_Musou_suru) without dropping it (might very well drop it in the next episode), and a ['Kicked from the Hero's party' episode](https://myanimelist.net/anime/61587/Omae_Gotoki_ga_Maou_ni_Kateru_to_Omouna_to_Yuusha_Party_wo_Tsuihou_sareta_node_Outo_de_Kimama_ni_Kurashitai) without dropping it (will probably watch the full season)
[](#awe)
It's barely even challenging.
Full Dive RPG did the 'unbalanced Hell Mode' a lot more hellish than that!
That’s not *necessarily* a bad thing on an individual level. I’ve got four comedy anime on my list and another three action series, and I think a lot of that comes down to these just being the two genres that work the best without any real message, but that might also be contributing to the issue as there’s just so many of them.
I mean I think the reason *Apocalypse Hotel* felt a bit like a let down was because the more comedic turn felt… honestly kind of unnecessary? I think I was ultimately hoping for a little more meat from it, and while it is still enjoyable for what it is, I do feel like it ends up occupying a space that a lot of other series already kind of exist in.
What makes it paradoxical is that when you look at most of the most popular and talked about series… they always seem to have some kind of thematic thread through them, and I’m wondering if we’re so starved at this point that we forget what it feels like on the tongue. *Orb*, *Chainsaw Man - Reze Arc*, *Takopi’s Original Sin*, *Cinderella Gray*, *Medalist*, *Ruri Rocks*, and yeah sure *Apocalypse Hotel* all have something distinct that I could point to as the “theme” of the series and seems to be the keystone that keeps people coming back for more. Even further back, look at how people talked about *Bocchi, Vinland Saga, Zom 100, Frieren*, or *Oshi no Ko*. There are exceptions, sure, especially in the Battle Shounen space, but when you talk about the shows people will swear by as “masterpieces”, it really seems that the one thing connecting them isn’t as much the quality of the story or the quality of the production, but the existence of a half competent story in the first place.
None of this is to diss any of the shows I've listed. They are all generally good shows, but it is worth asking at some point why there’s this clear and obvious path to making a good show and yet season after season we always see a lot of shows that arrive DoA with the same generic plot beats and regurgitated story.
It really does at times feel like a toxic relationship.
Huh, a rare case of an unpopular Salty opinion that I actually agree with.
> there’s this clear and obvious path to making a good show and yet season after season we always see a lot of shows that arrive DoA with the same generic plot beats and regurgitated story.
On one hand, it's not nearly as easy and clear to make a good show as you make it out to be, and on the other, these shows "with the same generic plot beats and regurgitated story" only arrive DoA with the more "hardcore" anime fans such as this bubble here, the casual (and way stronger in numbers) crowd still slurps this stuff up and makes enough money for the producers to continue adapting those types of series, it's not that deep.
Yeah, I mean I did kind of make it seem easy didn't I. I'm not saying having some kind of themes in your story guarantees that its gonna be good (I mean hey just look at *Dusk Beyond the End of the World*), but its one of those things that, if pretty much all great stories have it, why wouldn't you at least try to do it yourself? You don't always have to be the most polished show, but if you can at least have an interesting idea and make a good effort, I'm willing to be lenient.
>the casual (and way stronger in numbers) crowd still slurps this stuff up and makes enough money for the producers to continue adapting those types of series
The thing is, I don't know how true this actually is, unless I'm way more out of the loop than I think I am. I mean shows like CSM, *Vinland Saga,* *Oshi no Ko, Frieren*, and *Takopi's Original Sin* are some of the most successful anime to come out in the last few years. Sure, *Solo Leveling, Demon Slayer*, and JJK are leagues more popular and all fall more into the camp of "action spectacle" than serious thematic writing, but that niche doesn't scale well and all three wouldn't be nearly as big without the insane productions associated with them.
I think it was laid out in that one piece Miles wrote about isekai, but these kinds of shows tend to do well, but not terribly well, usually being more just consistent money holes than anything. However, if you're going to burn money, I don't get why you don't do it on a project that at least as the potential to reach a much larger market cap if it gets lucky.
I will also point out that a lot of these audiences are the same that will go and praise *Orb* or *Oshi no Ko* or *Vinland Saga* to high heavens when they watch them. I just struggle to believe that there is a large enough audience that is not at all interested in deeper storytelling.
I consider it a pleasant surprise when any highly commercialized medium puts out something with thematic depth. But one thing I would say is that an anime being a turd isn’t an obstacle to it being a success for its producers and investors if it delivers what the intended audience wants. So many anime are not made for seasonal watchers that watch everything. They’re not made for people with any knowledge of basic storytelling precepts or any critical standards. They’re the particular kind of slop that a certain demographic laps up without question. I used to work with a guy who is exactly who those Am I Actually the Strongest and Kicked Out of the Hero’s Party shows are made for. He loves that stuff! Of course some of them don’t work for him, but it takes a particular level of incompetence in the production for him to notice anything is amiss.
Idk I think it’s best to just ask at the outset watching a show; is this TRYING to be good, or is it trying to play all the hits for a certain crowd?
There’s a ton of shows from the post-Eva boom in the late 90s and early 00s that are of varying quality but did seem to at least have something to say. This was the time when TV was starting to enter its modern form and a lot of really wild (and sometimes ill-conceived) ideas made it to air. Now again, they’re not all good, but it gives you an appreciation for what things could look like in a setting where “it follows basic storytelling principles” is taken as a bonus and not the standard.
It’s breaking my immersion /s
If only Narita would have included Mordred into the story, then this would probably be my favorite character ensemble out of any Fate entry yet.
I was wondering if there was news of another reboot, manga or something coming. Seemed like an awfully successful franchise based on how much expansion it's gotten. I really enjoyed Blood+ and still need to watch Blood: The Last Vampire.
For now watching some shorts. Had seen some Yoji Kuri stuff before and uhm. Kinda hated it. But well he's a big name in Japanese animation history so watching some more stuff. Yeah our sense of humor doesn't match. Maybe I also have attention span issues or something but the skits feel like they take too long to get to their 'twist' eventhough they're pretty short. Should just watch Shishigari again. You should watch it too! It's Kiyotaka Oshiyama. It's [free](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eNFBhmN_Yk). And then to stay with Oshiyama you should watch his [Aka no Kioku](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAsy0QkeTpw) so you have another short film to vote for in the awards. Do expect it to do well on the public side. Directed by the director (and more) of Look Back is a strong pull (then again I also expected the original post to do better on the sub).
Marin was always great though.
I know I’ve said it before, but I keep coming back to it in my head, and therefore will keep coming back to it here.
I don’t think there’s any reasonable assumption to be made that generative AI will not eventually make its way into anime production. This isn’t necessarily a condonation of the use AI in anime production, more a general observation.
Anime is a business at the end of the day, and while the tech right now is shaky and mostly peddled by people not in the art space, so were most technologies that we now take for granted. A lot of the “tech demos” we’ve seen are shaky and ugly, but I mean… yeah, art created by non-artists is going to be that way. I still suspect that by the end of the decade, we will probably see people testing the waters with it in areas like in-betweening and other “busy work” to speed up the creation process. Yeah sure, these are also entry-level roles for young talent to get their start, but the industry will just adjust to that. A lot of web gen artists are already coming in having proven themselves online, and schools will just adjust curriculums accordingly. I mean, it’ll be rough at first, but so too was digipaint and CGI and like with generative AI, they brought with them the “death” of certain skills on an industry level like 2D mechs or horses.
Will this lead to more enshitification? Sure. Was that already going on well before the rise of AI? Absolutely. Animation is hard, expensive, and time-consuming. To exist on the scale that it does now, there was an inevitable trade-off that needed to come, and if it is to keep going, so to will another need to be made. Your average consumer ultimately will not care, and before long it will be standard.
There’s always the possibility that the world ends before all this happens, which feels more and more likely with every passing day, but I think barring that circumstance that’s unfortunately just how things are gonna go. It absolutely sucks for the artists currently working in these fields, and maybe I’m just black-pilling, but I feel looking at what people are saying, even top figures in the space, it all just feels way too inevitable.
I guess it is what it is.
i recall many of times when people tried to explore automatic in-betweening and automatic coloring, and that always seemed to go nowhere (well, I did hear about tweening recently but that’s been there for many years now). idk about these days.
The bubble bursting will really be a market correction more than anything else. The hype will die (and hopefully some of these tech guys stop thinking they’re creating God), but with cooler heads prevailing, that might be what it needs to push into commercial application. I would not be surprised if someone is in the wings looking to develop a specialty tool with current models designed specifically towards animation streamlining. The hole in the market is there. It will be filled eventually. Right now there is a stigma against it, but with time that too will fade.
I'd like to sell you some Puts with an expiry of 1/1/2027 on Amazon Google Microsoft and NVIDIA then. I seriously doubt this will happen.
(I'd offer anthropic and OpenAI puts too but I'm not legally allowed to sell puts in private companies, so we have to use the Proxies of Amazon (owns 25% of anthropic) and Microsoft (owns 25% of openAi))
Looking at X and typing "AI anime" AI can generate *some frames* pretty well but you'll *definitely* need to generate the keyframes and the llk yourself. Just have sora2 fill in gaps as you draw like every 12th frame or so.
Basically it can replace poorly paid korean animators working 100s of hours of overtime but not actual art. (Though what it might do instead is that those poorly paid korean animators will instead use Sora2 to draw half their frames so they can actually go home on time since you have to throw out about 3/4ths of the AI's output every time you use it)
again my offer to sell you puts is still on the table
They’re trying to sell you puts because they’d bank off the hypothetical NASDAQ dive. That dive wouldn’t cripple and almost dismantle the entire global economy though; what happened in 2008 was far more cataclysmic than most people give it credit.
That being said if you’re buying hmu about the puts too.
Honestly, if it keeps said audience busy for a day before they get bored of it, I'd call it a net gain for humanity. That's 24 hours without kids being stripped through AI.
Genuinely makes the show unwatchable.

appears to be an issue with the whole season

I have no idea where else to ask this, but who was \[Ep1\] > who kidnapped Ayaka and ended up getting Zabaniyah-ed by Assassin? Which faction was this guy actually from?!<
- best starting point for fate IMO for new watchers. Modern and they explain the premise of the grail wars in the prologue.
You miss out on "fan service-y" moments and references but is great to get you hooked into the franchise
Could've sworn I've heard that VA for Teoritta before, but nothing on her MAL casting list looks familiar so I guess I'm just flat out wrong.
Like, remember when the commander ordered her guys to deploy a new weapon and our hero said "No stop it'll kill a lot of good guys too" so she stops? 1. Does this lady somehow not understand how her big guns work? And 2. She already stated she's planning to send all her soldiers to die! So on no level does this exchange make sense. It's there to let us know about the thing so that when thief boy shows up with it later it's not just deus ex machina, but the actual words don't make sense for the universe OR for the stated character motivation.
The whole episode was like that. This one's for people who came up on battle shonen only, anyone paying attention to the script is gonna be left cold.
I mean, yeah, it's a comedy. I don't think Konosuba is loved for its iconic plot.
The appeal of Slayers is simply a D&D campaign gone off the rails, it's a bunch of loveable goofs having silly adventures. With a bit of serious plot here and there, that's generally not as good.
I'll see about potentially adding something special for the removal reason of long form Discussion posts, as that's something we can only trigger if it already meets the length requirement to use Review and Essay (which we only added the exemption to the karma for a few months ago). That would hopefully fix edge cases like what you experienced (and without aiding people trying to bypass it).
In general it's not happening these days because anime is aimed at kids, teens, adult nerds or nostalgic adults with the idea of selling merchandise surrounding the anime such as toys, the original manga/LN/game, soundtracks, models etc. This means there is no incentive to adapt classical novels as you can't sell merchandise. I think only anime that airs on NHK and Netflix breaks this mold, as NHK (the Japanese public broadcaster) primary aim isn't profit and Netflix just wants views (I think). Which is why we got an another Anne of Green Gables adaptation last year: it aired on NHK.
I’ve been rewatching Charlotte, and I’m curious what people here think about it.
On one hand, the first half feels almost slice-of-life with superpowers, while the second half suddenly turns much darker and more dramatic. Some people say that tonal shift is what makes it memorable, while others think it’s rushed and needed more episodes.
Personally, I think the ideas are strong (the powers with limitations, the consequences, the MC’s development), but the pacing in the final arc really hurts the impact. It feels like a 24-episode story compressed into 13 episodes.
I have watched most of the common recommendations. I would be greatful if any of them can make me cry.
