My Thoughts on the Season so Far
I was looking at MAL to add shows to my watchlist for the season, and I didn’t realize I had picked up so many in Winter 2026. It kind of made me laugh because of all the posts I have seen recently of there being nothing to watch. Even without my return shows:
* Frieren
* Hell’s Paradise
* Anyway, I’m Falling in Love with You
* Jujutsu Kaisen
* Blue Miburo
* Oshi no Ko
* Chitose (I count this because their production issues caused a delay until like..Spring)
There are still 21 different titles I am keeping up with. There really is so much to check out this season, I feel like I’m kind of being spoiled by all the options. Does anyone else feel the same?

That's how personal taste works. Every season is someones best ever or worst ever and that's ok, we're all different.
we are all here because we enjoy anime. That’s all that matters to me
So when theres not many of them (or for clickbait) they claim they are bored cuz only the animation retain their low attention span.
I also watch around 16 to 18 animes each season and for several years now, not a single season has been boring because there's so many gems. If people don't want to discover such gems its fine, but don't judge an anime season as bad or boring if you are only watching 10% of it...
Thats how Crunchyroll ends up with Sun "no development at all" Jiwoo as best character and anime of the year... Just because the animation is orgasmic and no other real reason.
A popularity contest where people vote only for the 1 or 2 things they have only known among hundreds great animes.
As for the quality of the season overall on the basis of all the new series, there are still a few I have slated to watch yet to air (doing so tomorrow, actually). But of what I've seen thus far, it looks like it will likely surpass last autumn and summer seasons, as far as for new series anyway which is what I mainly judge each season on. I don't know if it'll be able to match or exceed last spring or winter.
From the ones I've tried,
Definitely continue watching, likely to completion:
- The Darwin Incident
- Ikoku Nikki
- Shiboyugi: Playing Death Games to Put Food on the Table
Probably will continue:
- The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife
- Wash It All Away
More unsure:
- Arne no Jikenbo
- A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation
Still need to try/yet to air:
- Yuusha no Kuzu
- Kaya-chan Isn't Scary
- Oedo Fire Slayer - The Legend of Phoenix
Invisible Man seems cute so far, I am excited to check on Kaya when it airs.
The concept behind the Darwin series, for example, is something I've been fascinated by for a long time even outside the realm of anime and fiction and it's what placed the series on the map as the most intriguing and anticipated to me since I've long been drawn in by evolutionary biology, the old Soviet humanzee experiments from the 1920s, and just the concept of crossing and hybridization of any two or more species with one another, including humans. There are some other novel ones, either in general premise or what the focus/emphasis is placed on and how the direction is handled.
Shiboyugi, as you mention, definitely felt the most impressive in terms of being technically impressive and having an artistic vision, although Ikoku Nikki did pretty well with that as well, although that one I would chalk more up to the writing. Then I realized it was the same director as from Gimai Seikatsu of the summer of 2024, and that's a series I still need to get around to but have seen a few individual scenes and shots from and know it's the kind of anime I love.
Wash It All Away is requisite iyashikei. I also love these iyashikei SoLs which do something a tad different, and so far laundry was not one I was expecting but welcome.
And even the Invisible Man one underscores my point about this season offering some ideas I haven't seen done before. That series is just a calm and relaxing, low stakes fantasy + romantic comedy in a supernaturally diverse but laid back-type world. Nothing bold or radical here. But then I think that even the concept of invisible people - apart from the classic Universal monster Invisible Man, some superhero/supervillain stuff, and temporary invisibility powers like the cloak in Harry Potter, for something basic and with a lot of interesting potential it's something I feel like I haven't seen much of. Especially in anime. Double that when you add fully blind characters and characters majorly limited by severe physical disability.
At baseline, I am drawn to an anime by how much I might like a character, or if the initial question posed in the first episode is interesting enough that I wanna follow it. That’s what drew me to Darwin as well. Like you the whole evolution aspect of it.
I don’t necessarily judge on visuals, although I can appreciate good tones in color and stuff like that. Whether or not I care enough to see how the plot plays out is really the only draw though. Even the most simple like The Demon King’s Daughter is Too Kind, it’s like…fantasy Anya Forger and ai think Anya is a cute character, so I am invested in demon King’s Daughter to see the lovable and soft hearted hijinks.
Or Mayonaka Heart Tune, a SoL, romance, mystery, potential harem lite. I wanna know the answer and I wanna see the puzzle pieces together, With the Invisible Man anime, like you I am interested in the dynamics as well. It is a novel idea to mix light fantasy with the added “one person is invisible and the other is blind”. I’m so curious to see how they interact more and the romance forms.
Ikoku Nikki promises to be a really interesting and probably deep and heart rending story of grief, family, and processing those traumas. I love that kinda stuff. Even Champignon Witch seems like it’s going to do something similar in how it handles grief, love, isolation etc.
There are definitely a few I think this season that deal with kind of heavy topics. Roll Over and Die, Jack of All Trades, Sentenced to Be a Hero, Dead Account, The Holy Grail of Eris. I am pretty transfixed on it all, really.
As you can see nothing new but then I found some gems.
Tamon’s b-side, Isekai office worker and sentenced to be a hero.
So that means I will watch 6 anime this season which is more than I usually watch. Who knows if I will pick up more. There is also more shows that are continuing which I’m not watching but I can agree this season is packed.
