‘Demon Slayer’ anime creators on the future of AI in anime: “Our studio, Anipliex and Ufotable, will continue to work with our hand-drawn artists, our writers, our voice actors, and the talent that help bring this emotion to the big screen”
Commentaires
2. VA Micah Solusod and wife Ayu Sakata under the Twitch handle "hellopainapple" occasionally draw art based off of art prompt sites. Note that it is AI or similar in the sense of randomly-generating a prompt to use. However, those two do the drawing. They don't have AI do the drawings.
3. In terms of AI-generated "art", there is one instance I can think of where monetization is fair game and is arguably ethical to use: Say you had a non-human animal make art. For example, you had a horse, dog, or elephant draw a picture of some trees. AFAIIK, there is no applicable copyright in any country for when a non-human animal makes art. From there, AI-fying it seems fair game. In terms of monetization, some profits could go to local shelters or charities.
Most of her entertaiment value comes from her interactions with her ~~tsundere father~~ creator Vedal and other Vtubers. Also she's built on Twitch chat, not IP of someone else. Neuro and Vedal also lean hard into the fact that Neuro is AI and doesn't try to be something else (aside trying to gaslight Vedal and other Vtubers).
Neuro on her own trying to pass as a real, human Vtuber would crash her popularity instantly.
It's one of the only examples of ethical LLM usage I have found so far that is well known.
These are some of the least interesting forms of AI slop out there. If you've seen one of these fake movie trailers, you've basically seen every single one.
> For example, you had a horse, dog, or elephant draw a picture of some trees.
What even is this example.
2. "Inspiration" until it gets repetitive and the source is people with a brain.
3. What even is this example? In what context does an elephant animate a 24 minute film? Are you okay?
Edit: no problem, i didnt expect upvotes for saying such a blasphemy, that AI can be useful
Such as?...
yes but no. they try to nitpick and say "it's not gen ai, it's an LLM trained on our unique art style to automate production".
in other words it's ai but they don't want to admit it.
still not a relevant distinction, and it highlights the simple reality that the anti-ai crowd tends to just be an ignorant mob that's outraged by a buzzword.
Many games were full of hate comments just for having AI generated assets that werent even in the game, like some files that werent eliminated but they werent used in anything. I mean, the game companies could have evaded this one, but what does it care if there is an AI file that isnt in the game, does it ruin your experience in any way?
Also some indie games cant afford many artist or VA, so they use AI where they have no one in the role. Idk, to me it seems right to use it with this premise.
One of the most wtf moment i had it was one of this case, where AI was used for artistic reasons. The AI was used for the VA of a robotic character, as always it had "AI slop" comments, while this is one of the most fittings role for an AI.
Stepping outside the artistic field, its used for some jobs that are a lot repetitive for a human and with low wages, of course before AI no one would have taken the job, after AI they cry that it is robbing their jobs.
Idk if this is enough, but i want to add that i also hate random AI videos, or AI advertising or the self proclamed artist that do only AI art claiming that. "giving the right promt is very difficult", but i dont hate AI, i hate who use it the wrong way, cause its a very powerful instrument that apply in a lot of different fields. Its also difficult to find someone that has the right knowledge about it out of the computer science specialists, most dont really know how to apply AI other then the classic prompt that gives you a image, a video or programming code.
Can i ask you why (if you do) you hate AI, like i said i hate who use it in the wrong way, not the instrument, it doesnt have any will.
>One of the most wtf moment i had it was one of this case, where Al was used for artistic reasons. The Al was used for the VA of a robotic character, as always it had "Al slop" comments, while this is one of the most fittings role for an Al.
Tons (and Ireally mean tons) of devs, specially indies have been able to made great games without the use of gen AI for decades, there is no "budget" problem, just a creative one, and recurring to slop is no excuse.
>Stepping outside the artistic field, its used for some jobs that are a lot repetitive for a human and with low wages, of course before Al no one would have taken the job, after Al they cry that it is robbing their jobs.
I dont mind it for eliminating repetive task but most of the cases thats not even gen AI in the first place not usses where most people even dissagree with.
>Can i ask you why (if you do) you hate Al, like i said i hate who use it in the wrong way, not the instrument, it doesnt have any will.
There is no "good way" to use gen AI when at its core is a machine trained on stolen art and labour from actual artist, writters, devs, etc, and at its "best" is just soulles slop, good or bad I like my art created by actual persons
On the last point, i agree we have a problem on copyright, idk if this problem has been updated.
> using a tool shouldnt be persecuted so badly
It's always interesting how people will totally jump onto one side of an argument without even reading what the other side is saying.
You should know, for the rest of us, you sound like "Why can't I just bring a calculator to my mental math competition? I'm just using a tool. I don't deserve this persecution."
Considering that knowing how to use blender is an actual skill and art, yes, even when using it with MLL models
Who are the reason for the RAM shortage to begin with. Didn't OpenAI reserve like 40% of the entire world's RAM allocation just recently?
If they publicly say something - you can for damn sure take that as gospel.
That being said I could definitely see studios in the future running smaller scale stuff internally on private servers. Because governments are refusing to move in and regulate it it's going to be one of those things where if you don't use it you'll start to be uncompetitive in the market. Which in itself is really a reason for the government to step in and regulate it.
AI is one of those things that's probably never going to go away even if the bubble bursts in the next 2-3 years. Bean counters and boardrooms see the money on the wall regardless of how it affects society and Industry.
How AI affects human artists going forward is really a debate we needed to start having regardless.
It would be nice to see some actual regulations come worldwide on the matter.
It probably will given what Grok has been up to lately. The real thing that will curb AI though is the enormous amount of energy the industry needs. It's already far outpacing any other industry and energy grids are already congested in many developed countries.
Of course they still have the issues of training data coming from agreeing sources, and the actual output being something people think is good that cause issues.
There's elements in there that are incredibly illegal in many countries. There's going to be some instances where they're going to be forced to step in regardless if they want to or not. It's just a shame that it's going to take this much hand wringing and pushback to get them to move.
https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2025/10/15/how-people-around-the-world-view-ai/
And of course I understand why someone would preface that way, since it would be easy to read it not as "we will exclusively work with our human creators" but as "we will continue to work with our human creators.... but also will see what AI options are available". That would not be a novel thing for a company to do.
"We will continue working with real people" is what every company, EVEN THOSE AI FIRST, can say. Because even AI first companies still have a few humans.
Statements like "We're not using it for anything" or "We're not using it for anything, except basic office clerical work (emails, scheduling) or whatever" is the only way I'll pay attention.
There were already many software video production tools available and studios choose not to use them.
Edit: you can downwote me how much as you want, but it's a fact ufotable is good at using digital tools, just look them up doing this for fate movies.
As you said they are different, and photography can't capture a dragon. AI art can create a dragon just like a human can. It's just a silly comparison you are making.
Just look at the current twitter creating nudes of people situation for AI already being awful. Not to mention the environmental effects. Photography at least didn't have such awful side effects.
I also expect seasonal shows to increase by over 50% in number
Some artists use it as tool to speed up work process. Ofc no one will publically announce it for now.
Maybe the bigger studios will keep it human centric for saving face (like this post here), but there will be hundreds if not thousands of studios popping up which will make use of AI assets
It's stupid to think you can keep the gaming and entertainment industry free from AI
Also, they are the ones handling the Kagurabachi adaptation, guess I'll never get to know that anime from my childhood.
Honestly feels like they will take a bigger hit to their reputation than what they gain from this. But hey if they continue with valuing quality it won't matter in the long run. Probably.
But hey wouldn't be the first time some boneheaded upper management ruined something, just that Cygames have always been a bit wiser on that end and highly valued quality. I guess KMR stepping down from a lot of responsibilities might have changed the company culture for the worse idk.
It's true that Cygames' new subsidiary, Cygames AI Studio, is focused on research of AI. However:
1. If you look at the job listings, they make it clear that the AI researchers will be doing research and evaluation only, and that they will not be jumping to implementation. Chances are, nothing will change in the next year, at the very minimum.
2. The job listing descriptions are actually pretty tame. Most of their AI usage I actually don't mind at all: stuff like AI game testing is standard industry practice and can only improve their games.
3. Their generative AI positions also emphasize respecting artists' rights and maintaining quality over profits, meaning that they'll at least try not to make slop. They seem to want to use AI as an assistive tool instead of a slop machine, which I'm still skeptical about but think could be fine.
4. The capital of the subsidiary is 25 million yen, or roughly $160,000 USD. That's like, enough money to send one high schooler to a 4-year college... This is far from CyberAgent, a megacorp, going "all in."
5. Cygames Pictures and Cygames AI Studio are two unrelated subsidiaries of Cygames. In other words, the chances of Cygames AI Studio's AI work touching Kagurabachi or future Cygames Pictures anime are pretty close to zero.
I hate AI slop as much as everyone else, but let's back off for a moment here, and think; is this really that worse than what every other game publisher has been doing for the past 3 years?
The answer is no, so I think we should stop ringing the alarm bells, and see whether or not Cygames makes slop first before acting like slop has already been created.
Ask yourself the very first basic critical question here.
*What is there to be """evaluated""" with regards to using Gen AI in 2026?*
I'm sorry but while you try to portray yourself as some adult in the room voice this is just extreme amount of biased copium at best and outright AI shilling at worse. We're not stuck with Dall-e 2 and the early days where nobody knew how and where to use Gen AI. Everyone already knows and we already have examples of how its being used.
It is only very convenient to try and hide behind "research" as if there is some hidden truth, some hidden magic that suddenly makes Gen AI acceptable, such hidden secrets btw which nobody in the past 3 years were able to figure out yet... This is comical.
*if none of the current downsides are appealing enough to dissuade a business/individual from using Gen AI*, both morally and economically then you're looking at someone just trying to find ways to exploit the system and just hoping to not get caught.
There is absolutely zero reason to give anyone, be it company or individual, the benefit of doubt here.
Its been years now, the *public already made their voices clear*.
There is nothing to "evaluate".
There is nothing to "research".
There is only an attempt to find a way to use it and not get caught.
>is this really that worse than what every other game publisher has been doing for the past 3 years?
Who cares about Cygames specificaly? As a gacha game publisher they're one of the worst ones if that is what you're asking. As an anime producer yeah I don't think you can do worse than Gen AI except for maybe slavery.
But after reading so many excuses this is just the stages of grief, you started with denial and are ending with the bargaining lol.
You're treating Gen AI like something that is inherently morally invalid, while I think it is the theft of artists' work and the abuse to mass produce meaningless and low-effort "content" that makes its use reprehensible. I don't see why companies shouldn't be allowed to try to find ways to use it in a way that can bring positive change.
For example, color masking and lighting are both repetitive tasks that can be sped up with generative AI. If a company decides to do so while only training their models from in-house, permitted data – like Cygames will, according to the job descriptions – I don't see why they should be criticized.
The job listings say that the research and evaluation in question is for Cygames-specific applications of AI. There is something to evaluate, and there is something to research.
You also misinterpreted my last point; maybe I wasn't clear, sorry. My point isn't that Cygames is awesome; it is that people are overreacting to an instance of investing in AI which isn't even as bad as what other companies have already gotten away with. Cygames hasn't done anything wrong, so far anyways...
But after reading so many excuses this is just the stages of grief, you started with denial and are ending with the bargaining lol.
I'm not even offended; just confused. You've said a lot about what I wrote being irrational or biased, but most of my original comment were just objective statements and nothing else... And, as I said, "I hate AI slop as much as everyone else."
1. What the job listings say.
2. What the job listings say.
3. What the job listings say.
4. What the subsidiary's capital is.
5. What the structure of Cygames is.
The only part that reflects my personal opinion is the last 2 sentences.
For now it is extremely unlikely that it will Uma Musume at all, outside of optimisation or at worst a tool to give idea to artist on design that will be done by artist after.
But there will be studios that do. Places that otherwise wouldn't have the budget or staff to handle a project. Outsource studios on other countries where they're just pumping out low quality work anyway and nobody's looking too close.
And then the question is, once the AI competition is out there, will the wider market give a shit?
I feel like what probably happens is that AI takes a while to get good just like it took a long time for CG integration to not be shit. But once it's passable, the market won't care and all the studios will start using it because otherwise they won't be competitive.
I think it would end up even worse, sure there would be more ''animation'' but it would inconsistent and probably low quality shit.
I think they waste their talent with this generic shonen crap, even it makes much money for whatever reasons.
You'd think for a story that takes place during WORLD WAR 1, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS IN HUMAN HISTORY, there'd be more sign of it.
redditors when the general public has different tastes than them:
a huuuuuge part of ongoing AI hate right now is them screaming "this will take your jobs and laws don't apply to us" way above and far beyond simply AI stuffs being technically inconvenient to some people
and also because AI slop right now is really bad in many places but AI bros just can't listen
given how admittedly carefully he chose his words, they're probably using or will be using ai soon. he didn't say they weren't, just that they'd "continue to be working with their current employees". ai and humans aren't mutually exclusive.
Because sakuga is crazy nowadays, even isekai-adjacent series are getting high quality animation.
https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/294638
As for OPM, I didn't watch that. I heard it was bad. I will watch it eventually just to see. The begining after the end also hurt my soul very much. love that manwha. They were both disrespected overall. That is the worst combo, Good story with horrible animation. (Insert Marlon Brando: Look at what they did to my boy...)
and i totally agree that sakuga is alive and well. just gotta sift through the slop. speaking of a good time for framerates and great first eps. check out sentenced to be a hero. 42 minutes first ep. I really enjoyed it.
They haven't made anything other than DS since they started prioritising just that, why are you surprised that's the face of the studio now?
This was technically a non-answer.
E.g. an AI inbetween tool that lets you determine the frame rate and the motion vectors can help key artists iterate faster and allow for more dynamic direction.
Also you can vary up the look of non key assets - using a 3D model crowd, and then having AI paint over to help them blend in better.
Of course, AI discussion is now a tribal membership thing on social media, so whether or not it brings value, or people posting about it have a point, I expect a horde of people (bots?) to downvote any vaguely pro instance of it - including this post!
Also just like how we're replacing all juniors with AI, and then wondering where the seniors are. Most key artists did inbetweening on the way up. I expect key artists to get worse, and to have fewer of them.
People demanding "nuance" are just repeating "It will be useful at saving time / cutting jobs."
Suffice to say, the only way we survive AI-pocalypse is to move society more socialist... capture the benefits of tech/AI over production and redistribute.
But that talk is far too political for way too many people, and so we're stuck screeching about AI been bad, even though it's pretty clear that there are situations where they can be beneficial when used appropriately, and the broader problem isn't its use but displacement (which ties back to the broader problem of capitalism vs labour).
In the mean time, the game is played by simply using it and saying nothing about its usage, or dancing around it by saying things like "We remain committed to non-generative artistic endeavours and expression of the medium."
Well yeah, someone somewhere still wants (and really in the current tech environment - needs) to control the production.
Both usages will happen, the same way there's trash animes released every season together with top tier anime.
Ufotable seems to understand that, they know the artists can't be replaced if they want to keep the quality they usually deliver.
Edit: Honestly I feel AI could of been a good use in S3 of One Punch Man, they lacked staff.
