1) This show was in the PTW list of u/Shimmering-Sky for no particular reason for many years, and yours truly actually did a small favor for her by hosting this:

2) This is truly something a product of the early 2000s, post-Eva era:

I guess the one way i can put it is being "post-evangelion" anime, althrough i'm not sure if it's perfectly fits to what i'm saying. They don't really feels that much commercialized, and instead seems somewhat more ambitious and somewhat experimental, probably due to new technologies and the fact that television is now allowed to show much more. Oh yes, and clumsy computer graphics, which obviously also play a very important role. Due to all these factors, it was always difficult to say how good the story itself would be, but in any case, they almost always left a strong impression on me, and it is this vibes, I think, that is missing in many modern anime.

Yeah, this just got me very worried: the author basically used the characters as their direct mouthpiece for their personal beliefs on nuclear power instead of actual characters which is a large red flag for me... It was definitely a "I want to make point X so I'll have characters say X directly" sort of moment.
Yep. Being direct is one thing, but making a person in the middle of a nuclear meltdown preach is bad writing.

Yeah, this is very gatekeeping part indeed.

Yeah, I would say that this episode was a little more clumsy than the previous one. Like that moment with Chris berates Juna *~~because HE is bad at communication~~*, or the moment when the nuclear power plant chief started talking about his childhood and then began discussing the disadvantages of nuclear energy with Teresa, were kind of... forced. This episode also much more relied on CGI, which, as you can imagine, may not be the best decision.
That said, it's not, like, a *bad* episode. For example, I really liked the music ([*obviously*](https://myanimelist.net/people/508/Yoko_Kanno?q=yoko%20kanno&cat=person)) and there are some really nice and even atmospheric scenes. I also assume the show will touch more on environmental themes and issues, which is probably to be expected. Anyway, now that the introduction is over, let's see how the show actually turns out.

Sounds like the kind of decision-making I'd expect of SEED based on this episode. "We need someone who can shoot a bow! Let's recruit this girl who sucks at it!"

I don't know if they put all their resources in the pilot episode or what, but pretty much everything that I was so impressed by in the first episode was a notch or two lower in this one. That's what I get for gushing too much too soon, huh?

I'm not saying the production here was exaclty *bad*, but a step down still, I thought. While in episode 1 we got what I thought was really clever and tasteful use of early 3D animation, now we're getting full-on 3D model vs 3D model combat, and it's... well, they're doing they're best, and it's not awful for 2001, but we're still a couple of years away from 3D animation getting consistently good to look at.
But most notable was how there was almost no music at all during this episode. A massive bummer, because the music in the first episode was amazing. I guess it was a stylistic choice to have the fight and disaster play out without music, but, I dunno. I missed the music.
It was a nice touch though when Arjuna had a momentary aura moment and then the music abruptly stopped when she goofed up and almost fell off the roof!

The show has also stopped really explaining much to the viewers either, which is kinda on par for the era's pseudo-philosophical trends. I'm guessing she was meant to stop the meltdown instead of actually fighting the Raaja, but when she gives it a second go, Chris's instructions are "don't miss", and apparently she stops the meltdown by fighting the Raaja. Or is it that she's just supposed to shoot it herself, rather than summoning her kickass giant robot servant she's apparently somehow able to conjure up?

Fear seems to be a big theme in terms of Arjuna's powers. I'm getting Star Wars and Dark Side of the Force vibes.
I did get a chuckle out of the random and super blatant [anti-nuclear propaganda](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/e7c149dbc467.png). Very apropos for the time era, as well!
So yeah, ultimately, Arjuna shoots the Raaja with a bow -- a nice callback to her training in the first episode -- and the [nuclear explosion turns into ice](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/957274ae4690.png). I don't really get how that works, but I guess it looked cool?
In the end, I guess Arjuna's problem wasn't fear after all, but the fact that her body is filthy. Cut the girl a break, she hasn't had time to take a bath since she, you know, *died*. Now that this first incident is seemingly resolved, I'm hoping that next episode we might finally learn something about what's actually going on here!
I don't know what happened here, but I think that putting extra effort into the first episode to impress happens a lot and is a reasonable strategy for TV series.

I think this is about Chris and angry-girl who we don't know the ages of... Could totally be middle schoolers, but high schoolers are more likely.
Stronger first episodes, the rest being somewhat weaker, usual stuff.

It really does feel like 00s video game cutscene at times…
Everything changes fast and goes weird at times — Juna went from "I can’t" to "I can" to "wtf am I even doing" ALL within single event, or a single episode.
That Chris guy doesn’t stop being cryptic. Juna is doing exactly what he asked her to do (or so I thought), but apparently she needs to do something else. He won’t tell her what exactly of course, figuring this out is an exercise for the reader. Geez, he’s making Juna x Tokio romance even more awkward than it already got after Juna turned into a goddess.
Lots of things happen and nothing is clear yet. Need to keep watching.

1. She didn’t seem to be particularly good with archery. Don’t think so.
2. Not sure if they have more to them other than just showing Juna’s fear.

Well, I think that’s for "plot reasons" — when it comes to supernatural that’s a pretty common thing to make it perceptible to only a subset of "special" people (might be limited to only MC), so the author can give all the spotlight to these people and not, say, make police or military deal with the things, which would be a logical but boring thing to do. Also, it feels more "supernatural" and less "sci-fi" this way, isn’t it?
4. Ah yes, yet another total mystery of this episode. I imagine it’s kind of Avatar of Time’s guardian angel.
5. He didn’t move that well, he must’ve been exerting himself hard.
6. I assumed Chris meant fight too. I’m with Juna on this one.
7. They surely must have their own version of Chernobyl disaster, the anime aired exactly 15 years after it happened IRL. They even show actual photo of the plant.

Maybe this is right.
I’m still not quite used to the dated CGI they use for the Raaja but the giant Dune-esque sandworm design is pretty cool
Also Juna has a bow now, that’s awesome.
You know, I’m curious as to why Juna was specifically chosen for this.
Wow they really threw a guy in a wheelchair out of a helicopter.
The jet wheelchair is cool though.
Poor Tokio. I dunno who Chris just did to him but it looks like it hurt.
Ashura. I don’t know enough about Hinduism to really know all the deeper meanings here but I think it’s cool.
Although once again the CGI for Ashura is very dated, possibly worse than the Raaja.
I don’t blame Tokio for being jealous of/confused by Chris. Random dude just showed up and started hugging his girlfriend.
So what is the deal with this little girl who’s attached to Chris anyway? I’m still not quite sure.
Once again, very interesting use of real life photographs.
I think one thing that kind of dates this anime is the way nuclear power is treated. I think these days people are more open to accepting nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels now that we have better safety measures.
The climax to this episode is pretty cool, I like that giant ice bloom thing.
Not sure what Chris was talking about at the end, hope that’s elaborated on next time.

The anime is both ahead and behind the times. The "nuclear is dangerous" part is a bit old-fashioned, but realizing that it is just not economical because it is too expensive is ahead of the time it was made in (for the broader public).
Unfortunately, I'm going to have to stop watching this show and drop the rewatch.
One of my absolute biggest pet-peeves in any kind of medium is when characters are abrasive and horrible at communication for no reason whatsoever. And that's basically all we've been getting. It's literally painful for me to watch Juna, this poor girl, be constantly berated and insulted and gaslit by her supposed saviour, because apparently it's more important to be a dick to her with vague instructions and hand-waving than to actually do anything meaningful about what's going on this situation.

If I were in a better mindset (SAD sucks, folks), maybe I'd be able to get past it, but honestly it's just pissing me off and making it impossible for me to focus on anything else about the show. And frankly there's really been nothing else so far that's stood out positive or interesting enough for me to want to push past it and keep going.
I made it about ten minutes in, until the kid (who very clearly was talking about fighting the monsters) starts slapping Juna and calling her a fool and ranting and raving at her for thinking she needed to fight the monsters. Yeah, no, Juna doesn't need that kind of abuse in her life and I don't either. I want to take back my answer to yesterday's question and try my luck isekai-ing via death rather than putting up with this bullshit. This world deserves to be ended by shitty CGI monster snakes.

Definitely the worst part of the episode.
My tolerance for annoying characters is slightly higher at the moment, so I'll continue watching, but none of SEED made a good first impression.
This episode continues where the previous one left off. Tokio arrived at the power plant, reunited with Juna, who in turn transformed into the Avatar of Time form, and awakened a divine bow, Gandiva. She has looks like not yet ready to fight against the Raaja, but there is no choice. She is a huge pain. Even though the other task is to save the power plant, keep causalties and damages at the minimum, evacuate as much as possible.
