Darwin Incident Episode 1 [Review]
Hello to the few people reading this,
I've read the manga, currently waiting for the 9th volume to release in my country in 6 days and not knowing when the anime would release, I had decided, since I was also bored on a saturday to browse on a certain streaming platform to "ease" my boredom.
But, what a great surprise was it for me to realise that the 1st episode of the anime **had just been released** ! So i'll be writing my review of this episode, and maybe the next ones once they're available.
Animated by Bellnox Films, a new studio founded by Kōji Kajita (a founder of David Production), the episode 1 adapts the first chapter of Darwin Incident.
As for my review i'll list my impressions of the adaptation, starting by my feelings about it, what changed from the original chapter it was adapted from and how it impacts (IMO) the adaptation.
1) Starting by something that's really **personnal** and which might make some people relate (manga readers), but which can also be applied to newly adapted manga would be for this serie, Charlie's voice.
You know how most of the times, since we're reading paper without having any proper idea of how a character really sounds like ? Well that's what happened to me, I imaginated that his voice would be a bit lower, but then, when continuing the episode I realised that it all made sense, especially when remembering what's said in the 25+ chapters. That at the time of chapter 1, Charlie is 15, and also before his puberty hit, so yeah, I'll just hope (which I know might also not be possible) that we'll get to experience a voice change from Charlie due to puberty (will for certain not be on season 1).
But overall I don't think the animation is bad, we got **good music** for key moments which gives good tension especially during the ALA moments, I also don't mind the CGI which is only mostly visible for the cars, also the faces of the characters, especially if we recall how most of the time in the anime industry, the secondary characters often get bad treatments regarding their appearence, those ones are pretty well adapted (except sometimes for the ears which is something I for some reason paid attention to this time).
2) Now for what changed from the manga, most of it concerns the orders of certain scenes, like for example how they show us Charlie in the woods going back to his parents and only then you see his house with pictures of Charlie and news articles, while in the manga it's the oposite, which his a little detail that I think is important in the beginning since it's at the same moment in the manga that we're being **introduced** to the parents.
In the manga, the butterfly scene was supposed to be during the beginning forest part and was replaced by a snake eat birds scene (during the forest part) and now the butterfly scene happens after Charlie's first higschool day after the scene where Charlie gives his answer regarding Ozzy's dilema, which **highlight** Charlie's way of thinking even more.
Now the only scene I'm disappointed at is the restaurant explosion scene. Since it serves as an introduction for the "present" of what the ALA is doing, I believe it should've been more accurate, in the anime we only "see" the exterior of the building and then BAM, explosion, while in the manga we see clearly that, it's a Steakhouse (written "Empire Grill" moreover) we also get to hear a description of what the ALA represent (Animal Liberation Alliance) but more important the **Public Opinion** of it, them being seen more like lunatics. Also we get to see an untouched plate which can make you believe that (after reading the scene) an ALA member was here (or that animal meat was wasted). But also we get to see the little girl that the ALA member would mention after which makes it more important because in the anime, only the members would be affected by it, but for us it would only be a character we don't even see on screen, whereas if she was on screen the ALA action would have seemed even **more brutal and direct**, considering the explosion started literally next to her.
So that's the end of my review, I have great hopes for the anime considering how great the manga is, also I don't mind them adapting 1 chapter at the time, at least we don't get cut content like Tokyo Ghoul RE.
If you read this, I'm thanking you for the time you've taken reading this post !!
