I am a tourist. Convince me to stick around and recommend me something based on my odd likes…
I gotta be honest, I’m that one friend that’s interested in Anime but you can’t get him to watch much of it. He tries not to be mean about his opinions on Anime and his very specific tastes. So what are they? I will preface this now, by saying, my opinions are my own and what I’m interested in (or more what I am not interested in) is in no way bashing what you like about Anime. A lot of my opinions may seem surface level and maybe a bit narrow minded.
I thought Anime was lame when I was a kid. The only one I thought was kinda interesting was DBZ cause my friend loved it and it had big muscly dudes going on power trips. I thought it was funny. So that was my experience. Most of what I’ve tried has been as an adult cause I respect the creativity and the work that goes into it. I want to give it a chance, but there is so much out there that I’m a bit lost, cause I know now a bit more what I’m into.
I’m into super heroes, or “anti-heroes” mostly. Guys like Punisher, or Venom. I like bounty hunters (western or sci-fi) Bad-ass dudes dispensing justice or going on missions. I like bittersweet endings. Tales of self sacrifice.
I’m not really into the whole weak guy or girl mc. It’s fine if they have an arc where they get stronger and better, but I don’t like mc that are led around by the side characters the entire time. I want a competent mc. Someone at least courageous, and even better if they are cool. I know this probably all sounds lame.
Below I’ll go through Anime I’ve finished (very small), anime I’m interested in (somewhat bigger list), and a mention that may ruffle some feathers:
What I’ve Finished:
\-Cowboy Bebop (I liked this quite a bit)
\-Cyberpunk Edgerunners (I loved this and the setting)
In Progress:
\-OG Dragonball (So I can watch DBZ)
\-Berserk (The Manga technically, which I’m loving)
What I’m interested in:
\-Akira
\-Ghost in the Shell
\-Goblin Slayer
\-JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
\-DBZ
There was one anime I started and could not finish, and maybe this will give more insight. I got through about 2 seasons? I think of AoT. I really liked the premise and I was really getting into it at times, but I really got taken out by the pacing of it. Mainly how there is so much filler dialogue. I got tired of a character explaining there thoughts every 5 minutes, especially during fights. Maybe I’m just not into internal monologue? Sorry if you enjoy the show, I just got tired of it.

No, I won’t elaborate.
Kengan Ashura
Blade of Immortal
Back stabbed in dungeon.
These two start out with weak dudes that get betrayed. Get stronger and then go revenge sprees. More so revenge on Back stabbed in Dungeon. Arifrueta, he goes to get what he wants and will not let things stop him.
You should watch Jujutsu Kaisen it has some of the best fights in anime, especially season 2.
\- Vinnlandsaga : If you like the Berserk Manga, you will probably like this as well. Similar themes and vibes but in a real world viking setting ( I will not elaborate in fear of spoilers). The main character starts out as a kid though, so this might go against your dislike of "weak guy" MCs, although i would still reccomend it
\- Psychopass: Most often compared to Ghost in a Shell. Since you liked Cyberpunk Edgerunners setting, this one might be for you. In a dystopian future the police fights crime by evaluating peoples psychological profile and try to prevent crime. Since dealing with crime will decrease said evaluation, called psychopass, police are handlers for people whose score have deterioated enough to be detained, but are stable enough to work with them. Since you like anti heroes, you will probably like the male protagonist of this one.
\-Jojos Bizarre Adventure: If you watch it, skip the first part (phantom blood). Most fans are agreeing, that the 1st part works as a prequel, but is more bland then the rest of jojo and not a good entry point. Every "part" follows a new protagonist and can be watched on its own (although references are made). Unless you are a completionist or a hardcore fan that just wants more Jojo, the first part, will not be a good representation of what the franchise is about.
\- Samurai Champloo: If you liked Cowboy Beebop, this one might be for you since its written and directed by the same guy. The Director is known to combine a setting with a musical genre to create the vibe for his series. If Cowboy Beebop was Jazz and Scifi, then Samurai Champloo is Samurai and Hiphop. Similar episodic structure, with great animation and action.
Death Note
Code Geass
Black Lagoon
Bleach
Naruto Shippuden
As an FYI, that's not what filler dialogue is (though also still a perfectly valid and common thing to not like). Filler is animated extra material that isn't present in the original source material canon and is mostly an artifact of a much older style of anime, where anime was gonna air every week of the year, regardless of if there was a story to tell or not (it's quicker to animate anime than to write the underlying source material). [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/w3oo5l/gintama_explaining_how_filler_works_gintama/) is a good clip explaining it and the various techniques that are used.
Anyway, that doesn't happen that much in the modern day, because production studios have for the most part, changed to a seasonal model, where instead of making filler, they just don't air the anime (so all of the anime ends up being canon).
I will also note, that the whole explaining their thoughts in fights is usually an artifact from manga / light novels, where it's very difficult to show motion like it can be done in anime. And so it's quite common for things to be exposited to help give the sense of action. And these can be kept in the resulting anime if the production stays faithful to the source material. Though obviously some shows are worse about it than others.
Imo, AoT has a lot of showing, but not telling. I would imagine, you just didn't notice it.
Demon slayer
Hunter x Hunter
Attack on titans
Also there a ton of stuff in life I wanted to like. Like for example yogurt and smoothies but after trying and trying them no matter what I did I never like it that ok. It ok if you want to like anime but never do.
