“Tell me the best anime you have watched so far.”

I’m tired of starting anime that feels boring or generic after a few episodes. I’m looking for actually good anime, not just mainstream hype.

Hi justchandan, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

Okay, so

1. What do you actually like genre wise?
2. What have you watched that you hated? Liked?

darryledw2026-01-11 14:02

please can you get out of here with this logical and constructive thinking, can we instead commence with people taking wild shots in the dark followed by replies from OP saying:

*"nah that one was boring"*

or

*"watched"*

This is my favorite comment I’ve ever seen on this sub

I couldn’t stop watching Erased

PerceptionOk85432026-01-11 12:19

Kaiji Ultimate Survivor, Shinsekai Yori, Higurashi, Dead Dead Demons, Takopi

Can’t decide which one is best for me among them lol

Kiriijou2026-01-11 13:18

As an important heads up, **for OP** and anyone else who might be interested in watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (Higurashi When They Cry), make sure you start with either: the [2006 anime](https://myanimelist.net/anime/934/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni) (and it's [second half Kai](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1889/Higurashi_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Kai)), the original visual novel, or the manga adaptation.

The 2020 anime Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni: Gou (Higurashi When They Cry: New), is a sequel to the original story, not a remake. **Don't accidentally start with Gou**, as it's full of spoilers.

(_Note: in most (if not all) regions, the only Higurashi anime on Crunchyroll, is Gou. Also, the original Visual Novel is currently available on Steam, under the title"Higurashi When They Cry: Hou", with the first arc being free to download._).

PerceptionOk85432026-01-11 13:54

Are you a bot? You always come with the same comment when I mention Higurashi hahah

Kiriijou2026-01-11 14:05

I'm not a bot. I just recycle the same comment, so I don't spend too much time rewriting it. I typically target mentions of Higurashi, that both don't specify the start point, and are in a thread where the start hasn't already been clarified.

It's unfortunate that Gou's confusing marketing (as to whether it was a remake/new adaptation, or not), and CR only having the Gou/Sotsu (without even implying that it's a sequel), makes the clarification necessary.

PerceptionOk85432026-01-11 14:07

Yeah you are doing gods work lol, Gou was a mistake

My favorite Anime is "Made in Abyss".

Its a Fantasy Adventure Anime about a little girl and a robot that go on an Adventure in a mysterious, beautiful, fantastical, dangerious and cruel netherworld.

This series is adorable, wholesome, joyful, heartwarming, dark, brutal, sad and heartbreaking.

Its the most adorable most wholesome show I know and Riko is one of the happiest protagonists I know.

This series has a reputation for being crazy dark and sad. You will find it on "Darkest Animes ever" lists.

Those two sides synergize well with one another.

In my opinion the series is also visualy beautiful and one thing most people agree on is that the music is amazing.

HalcyonDrift2026-01-11 12:26

Reg is one of the most adorable characters while also able to be such a badass, He is such a good boy 😭

Komorebi_LJP2026-01-11 14:16

Still can't phantom how S2 got snubbed at the awards.

S2 was phenomenal. Made in Abyss has been so consistently good in quality from its 2 seasons and movies its really rare.

NeKon692026-01-11 12:24

Of all time probably is:

Attack on titan

Code Geass

Takopi

Steins gate

Reze arc (didn't like the first season much, but the movie is a masterpiece)

Edgerunners

There are a lot of other great options, but these are the ones that came to my mind first!

Hayao Miyazaki films are hard to beat when it comes to the best anime. I love Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away the most.

For a short anime series: Odd Taxi, Orb: On the Movements of the Earth

Longer series: Vinland Saga, FMA: Brotherhood, JBA: Diamond is Unbreakable

edit: And there's always Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Plastic_Two_26362026-01-11 12:59

Dandadan, for me personally the best action anime of all times, and Mikadono sanshimai wa angai choroi, the best shoujo of all times

Immediate_Arrival4702026-01-11 13:50

probably konosuba but it could also be natsume yujinchou or mushi-shi I have watched a LOT of really good anime so ill add other mentions : gintama and yofukashi no uta.

-Stress-Princess-2026-01-11 13:59

Inuyazshiki san: Lost Hero is probably my #1.

Its storytelling and use of foils is by far the best Ive seen. AND IT ENDS THAT SEAS0N. I sometimes hate that some shows go on forever and this one comes, tells the story and its done.

Steins Gate is a great time travel anime. The way the main dude changes through the anime really makes me feel some way as I wouldnt want to experience what he did.

This Angel spoils me rotten is probably one of the best romance anime Ive seen. Its very organic realistically paced development.

Jujutsu Kaizen is very rapidly becoming my favorite action anime. The whole incident that happens after something happens to guy is crazy. The fact that it's still going is great.

Made in Abyss, its the very rare-production where everything comes together:

unique music, one of the most interesting settiings in anime and amazing worldbuilding through its art , unique story, great characters, great animation, great directing, poignant themes.

The 2 seasons and movie have been remarkably consistent in quality. Obviously we will have to wait and see how that turns out for future seasons, but what has been put to screen so far is some of the best stuff in the medium.

Guardian of Galactic Heroes is probably the one. Or Kaibutsu by Naoki Urasawa.

SentenceBusy46742026-01-11 15:09

It may have been mainstream when it was out, but it's fallen to the wayside these days - if you haven't seen it I'd suggest Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (make sure not to watch the "-Chan" that's the chibi series).

Other than that I was originally a fan of the Dungeon Meshi manga and I was pleasantly surprised by how good Trigger was with the adaptation.

Or I'd recommend my favorite Gundams Double ZZ, Victory, and Turn A. (Note: ZZ is about the only you may feel like you want to watch the original Gundam and the 2nd Zeta because they're are all direct sequels. Other than that the Gundam series is pretty spaced out so really you could start from anywhere).

Prestigious_Pin_46322026-01-11 15:34

It's really hard to pick only one best anime because every anime has its own beauty. But if I had to only choose one I'd say "Attack on Titan" especially the first three seasons were perfect. But honorable mentions are aswell: Death Note, HunterxHunter, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto, Parasyte the Maxim..., basically all of these can be considered as perfect as Attack on Titan

cinnameuijoo2026-01-11 16:08

Detective Conan . start from the beginning and you won't get bored.

Krisoakey2026-01-11 17:09

- Attack on Titan
- Hunter x Hunter
- Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood
- Vinland Saga
- Chainsaw man
- Steins Gate

In that order, those are my faves thus far.

Edit: Forgot about Vinland saga!

Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is genuinely one of the best anime I've watched so far. Cinematic, direct, and leaves you pondering in shock. Not sure if it is considered "mainstream hype" due to how popular it was last year.

I also love Puella Magi Madoka Magica and a more recent pick would be Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines. Makeine's a bit dependent on if you enjoy unique romcom and school settings.
