Anyone else finds Weathering with You Makoto Shinkai best movie?
Everywhere I read online people seem to prefer Your Name, but to me the movie I keep coming back to is for sure Weathering With You.
Maybe its the time where I watched the movie first time resonated with my life at the moment, but its such a gorgeous movie. The writing, the music and the dynamic of the couple never not make me cry

None of those movies are directed by the same fellow who did “Your Name” or “Weathering”.
Don't get me wrong, I love Your Name as much as the next person, but there is just something special about his early works.
5 Centimeters per Second is a classic and The Place Promised in Our Early Days is severely underrated. Voices of a Distant Star is also a hidden gem, if you can look past the not so visually appealing character design.
That said, I've always been kind of partial to Garden of Words, but it has flaws of its own.
And I still listen to almost all the Music from 'Your Name'. The only song I listen to from 'Weathering With You' is 'Grand Escape'. I have to Praise it for that.
I still think The Garden of Words is hard as hell to beat. Such a visually stunning film was a great story.
And once again that watercolor hyper realistic style animation is stunning. Almost every frame in that film is painting worthy
They didn't get much into the idea in the movie, but I'd have liked more focus on it.
1. 5 Centimeters Per Second
2. Garden of Words
3. Weathering With You
4. Your Name
5. The Place Promised In Our Early Days
music was nice, but it cant keep up with Suzume. the story and characters in suzume i liked much more too. suzume also doesnt have the time travel timeline shit going on tjat your name does
I think in Hodaka case its a trap of young people going into Tokyo or any big city expecting to be able to live life but failing. But yeah I did like the selfish nature of this movie in choosing love over another sacrifice the world for the girl myself, dude is 16 :p
They being said.
It's a tier below my top three, which I kind of perceive as connecting movies. Since Your Name was his definitive statement on his main theme. "What separates us and what keeps us together."
Tier 1 - Your Name, 5cm, Voices of a Distant Star
Tier 2 - Garden of Words, Weathering
In a way, WWY feels too interesting to ever be as popular as *Your Name*. YN is, by any reasonable assessment, a very plain film. The characters are basic, the story is basic, and the more you think about it the worse it gets. So just don't do that. It sort of just dumps ideas on the screen, some of which work and others that don't. WWY is just him taking that mess of ideas and refining it into a far better film, but in doing so doesn't quite have the same "it factor" for the masses.
Maybe because i dislike magic/fantasy crap in those 3
After that my favorites are 5cm Per Second and Voices of a Distant Star. Voices of a Distant Star is like the quintessential Shinkai experience distilled into 20ish minutes, and with some indie rawness that I find really charming.
I think it is underrated though, in terms of quality.
