1999 ends 3 arcs earlier than 2011 version but it also has a more accurate to the manga episode 1.
Not that much reason to watch it over 2011 but there’s not really any large differences in the arcs they both cover.

Newer one is more accurate to the manga, fast paced and includes more content. The older one is also more mature and dark, at least imo. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiO4aleV3ac](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiO4aleV3ac)
I personally liked the 1999 version more, the art feels better and the way they explained things made more sense to me, the fast pace felt like they just shove things.
Also, I'm not really a fan of the following arcs tbh, seems like they are ass pulling stuff all the time.

In general, the 2011 Hunter x Hunter will work fine. There's a certain change made in the first episode, though, that is let unchanged in the 1999 anime - it doesn't hurt anything, just keep that in mind.

It's not like FMA, because FMA completely deviated from the story after reaching the end of the manga published so far.
The Hunter-X-Hunter 1999 instead added more character development of secondary characters in "filler" episodes instead (most don't feel like filler really), then continued to follow the manga.
It's hard to tell which one is better, some scenes are better in the 1999 version, other scenes are better in the 2011 version.
The 1999 version has more variety in opening songs, which are all pretty good. The 2011 version only has one opening, but it's as good.
The 1999 version has technically the perfect implied ending to the story. The 2011 version continues after that with an incredibly slow paced but also highly rated arc. It doesn't finish the story. Nobody knows if the mangaka will ever finish it in lifetime. He's old and has health problems.
The 1999 version is hard to find, but given the choice, I'd actually watch the 1999 version first. I like the darker tone, some of the scenes and the beginning more. After the end of the 1999 version, I'd continue with the 2011 version (you can directly chain it together without missing any important plot points).

Hard disagree. The 2011 anime ended at a perfect place, having resolved all major themes and plot lines of the show.
You get to imagine what Gon might do next, feeling joy and comfort that he gets to do so as natural growth instead of constant fights and battles and losing himself. Yet, we don't need to see it because his adventure is over and we are happy he attained the thing he wanted most and found something even more important than what he wanted. There is no more story to tell.
That is a perfect ending.

Agreed.

99 is generally better directed for the most part imo but it doesn’t cover chimera ants nor the election arc, while 2011 covers those arcs
