Hikaru no Go 25th Anniversary Rewatch - Interest Thread

**Heya, r/anime!**
In today's installment of "oh my God I'm getting old", Hikaru no Go turns 25 years old this year.
[](#flustered)
Once upon a time, I rewatched this show basically every single year at least once. It's easily my most rewatched and probably my most influential anime of all time.
I've been cooking up the idea of hosting a rewatch in celebration of the 25th birthday for a long time. And today I'm here to ask you all: **anyone interested in joining me for a rewatch?**

##What is Hikaru no Go?
> While searching through his grandfather's attic, Hikaru Shindou stumbles upon an old go board. Touching it, he is greeted by a mysterious voice: one of Fujiwara no Sai, the spirit of an ancient go expert from the Heian Era. Sai's passion for the game transcends time and space, and he seeks to master the *divine move* by playing the board game through Hikaru.
> Despite having no interest in board games, Hikaru reluctantly agrees to play, executing moves as instructed by Sai. However, when he encounters the young go prodigy Akira Touya, a passion for the game is slowly ignited within him. Inspired by his newfound rival, Hikaru's journey into the world of go is just beginning.

At its core, Hikaru no Go is a shounen sports anime revolving around the game of [go](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game\)).
It's an anime that got an entire generation of new go players interested in the game, both in Japan and outside of it. (I would know, I'm part of that generation!)
Despite the supernatural premise, it's a very grounded story with realistic characters about growth, competition, human emotions, and working hard towards your passion. Oh, and all the hype and emotion you would expect of a top-tier sports anime!

##Why should I watch Hikaru no Go?
**If you enjoy sports anime,** Hikaru no Go is genuinely one of the best ever. It's got all the hype, passion, emotions, joy of victory, pain of defeat -- everything you could ask for.
**If you've ever played a "mind sports" game like chess**, or even something like esports, Hikaru no Go has one of the best portrayals ever of what the experience is like: both the experience of playing a multi-hour game, and the mental work required to constantly improve.
**If you like stories of growth and coming of age**, Hikaru no Go gives a fantastic portrayal of kids maturing into teenagers.
**If you like good music**, Hikaru no Go has an *unnecessarily amazing* soundtrack! A board game has never sounded this good.
**If you like people looking [stupidly](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/62c66902cfc1.png) [cool](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/05c6f44700d1.png) and [intense](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/88782d94a912.png) while placing stones on a board**... I mean, that's definitely a thing here, too.

##Where can I watch Hikaru no Go?
Hulu has it in the US, I believe. Otherwise, you might be out of luck for legal options.
---
##What can I expect from this rewatch?
A host who's possibly a little too invested into this series and the game of go, for one! Although I haven't really put serious time into the game in years, I'm a decently strong player, and I have a **whole battery of go-related trivia and Fun Activities(tm)** lined up for the rewatch.
[](#fingertwirl)
I don't know if that's gonna lure people in or drive them away, but it is what you're going to get! This is a pretty special anime for me, and if I'm gonna make it the first ever rewatch I host on this sub, daggummit, I'm gonna do it in *style*.
---
##What's the schedule?
The plan is to start on **Saturday 31st of January**. Assuming my math is correct, at one episode per day, the last episode would land on **April 15th**, and we would check out the special on **April 17th**. Threads will go up at **1pm PST / 4pm EST / 10pm CET**.
I won't lie, this series is a bit of an investment: 75 episodes plus a movie-length special. With this early spring schedule, I'm basically working around the fact that I definitely won't be able to host this over the summer.
If I don't get enough interest now, I'll give it another go probably around September -- so, **if you won't be able to make this but would be interested in an autumn run**, I'd love to hear that as well!

Thank you for the attention! Hoping to have a great time with you all!

Commentaires
* Include **basic information about the anime** such as a description for those that haven't heard of it as well as where it can be watched (if legally available).
* Specify a **date and time** that rewatch threads will be posted. Consistency is good!
* Check for **[previous rewatches](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/rewatches)**. It's generally advised to wait a year between rewatches of the same anime.
* If you want to have a rewatch for multiple anime, they should be **thematically connected**. You can also hold multiple unrelated rewatches if they aren't.
* Ensuring **enough people are interested** is important. If only a few users say they *might* participate, you may end up with no one commenting once it starts.

I hope this helps! You may also want to talk to users that have hosted rewatches before for extra advice, also listed [on the rewatch wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/rewatches).

I mean, it's probably quite a bit more grounded to reality than Yu-Gi-Oh, from what little I know of it (significantly less threat of death, anyway!)
No worries, it certainly is a lot!
Gotcha! Awesome to have you either way!
But yeah, go with whatever works better for you and I'll be there either way. Heard a lot of good things about this show. [](#mugiwait)

I actually personally don't really have a big preference between spring/fall either way, so I'll happily see which way the pendulum swings with the general opinion.
People don't call me the Rewatch Queen for nothing haha, I'm usually in upwards of six of them at once. Only being in two at the moment is incredibly rare for me.
Awesome! No stress, it's definitely a marathon!
[](#mayushii)
Feel free to drop in occasionally, if nothing else!
[](#salutegeo)
Seems to be a lot of votes for Fall being maybe a bit better, I'll see where the general opinion lies.
[](#harukathink)
I watched the first episode when it aired... I personally can't really get into live action adaptations where the actors act like anime characters, so I didn't keep watching. But I know a lot of people on r/baduk like the Chinese drama a lot!
Autumn it is! Catch you then, I hope!
Thanks so much for the interest, everyone!
The overwhelming sentiment seems to be that autumn would be a better time for just about everyone, which I can totally get behind myself. So I'm going to make the call now to let this one simmer until then.
The new start time will likely be **around September 1st**, give or take a week or two -- we'll see how the details hash out closer to that time. So expect a new interest thread sometime in August! I'll be tagging everyone who showed interest here.
Thanks again, everyone! See you all in half a year, I hope!
