Do adults 30+ watch battle shonen?
So saw some posts on Reddit the other day that triggered my ocd talking about how they outgrew shonen and only watch seinen as they get older. But honestly as a 32 year old male myself I find majority of the best anime are battle shonen. Just because I’m not a teenager anymore doesn’t mean I can’t relate. The character development, hard work and getting better/stronger is still inspiring to me as an adult whether that’s in the gym or in every day life and honestly I feel like shonen was made for adults in mind as well considering all the mature themes in them and on top that they just tell the best stories so am I wrong for mostly watching battle shonen? My favorites are one piece, Hunter x hunter, dragonball, death note, and attack on titan. Also love berserk but that is seinen.

Just to be clear, i am probably not the target demographic for most of that. I still enjoy every show there.
'Turn your brain off' type media is a damn crime, the teenage years are the shortest yet some of the most crucial years of people's lives so it only makes sense that battle shonen aught to tackle deeper themes, even if it sometimes takes a... very long-winded path to get there.
It would especially be stupid in extremely long-running continuous series like One Piece, genuinely, i can't think of a single popular battle shonen anime without some kind of deeper message besides maybe Solo Levelling which is Korean so it doesn't count and Demon Slayer.
I like both shounen and seinen, but shounen is kinda easier to watch. Shounen episodes last often 5 minutes and you can binge 30 episodes straight, whereas some other genres might last 50 minutes and you spend 2 weeks bingeing the 12 episodes. Doesnt necessarily make shounen better, but it is easier to watch imo.

Adults enjoying the story ≠ adult focus in creation.
The people saying they outgrew it might find themselves watching it again after a break.
It used to be the main/most important genre that I did enjoy as a fan. That got replaced by mecha for me (many aren't far off shonen targeted works) however, yeah I still love it.

Eh....nah. Like most of the writing is very YA. That's fine, I enjoy YA writing at times, however, if you compare these works to actually adult targeted fiction it is noticeable what they are doing. Though again, yeah sometimes, I need the wonder of YA versus the more grounded or cynical nature of adult writing.
Attack on Titan is one of my all-time favorite series. It has a much deeper and more impactful story, and far better characters, than most series I've seen with that description. Other action-heavy series interest me greatly, like Dandadan, Kaiju No 8, and Chainsaw Man. Again, great stories, characters, settings, music, etc. aside from just good fights.
Honestly, I never look for what genre, tag, or demographic a series falls under. If I enjoy it, I watch it, and anything else is just categorization for lists I don't care much about.
It’s the same dialogue over and over and over with the only difference being a change in scenery and what/who they’re fighting.
But this 30-year old adult (me), won't shut up about World Trigger, the best battle shounen by far. It is an anime that doubles as both a sports and videogame anime, giving the most importance to tactics and ambushes (rather than just adding raw power characters).
My #2 favorite battle shounen is HxH, which is far behind World Trigger.
WT basically achieves this by creating a generalized power system, flexible abilities, featuring the bulk of combat between teams (sometimes 3-way or 4-way fights), and centering most combat around projectiles (first person shooter).
Oh, but for the love of god, do NOT watch the anime. They announced a reboot, so it isn't ready yet!!!
Trigger... ON!
I love every HxH scene where they execute a reversal and unexpectedly defeat their opponents.
Greed Island was also amazing. Great climaxes.
That being said, I watch and read titles from all demographics and genres, from kids shows, CGDCT and mahou shoujo to hard SF and eroguro, and I've seen plenty of kids shows that are better written and more meaningful than most critically acclaimed serious seinen, so I wouldn't use phrases such as "outgrow" when talking about the whole genre. It's all about mindset, perspective, and being open minded. There are things that you can get from those "immature" kid shows, exactly because you have certain set of experiences as an adult, so usually, there is no being too old to watch something, and if you can get something positive from what you watch, you're not wrong for watching it. Still, I'd always recommend to make attempts at broadening your horizons with different genres and themes, rather than just sticking to the one that worked so far.
My 60+ year old dad also really likes several shounen anime, particularly shows like Demon Slayer and Sakamoto Days.
"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."
I'm 40+ and started watching anime last year. I don't have history with battle shonens, never watched when I had the "right" age to do it, so nostalgia is not a thing for me and is not my prefered genre. But that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy some aspects of battle shonens.
Take AOT for example. In the first few episodes you have Mikasa being kidnaped to sell her to perverts, a suicide for fear, politicians sending thousands to a certain death because they won't be able to feed them otherwise. I mean, demographics in anime are all over the place. Even in something like Demon Slayer, you endure through countless Zenitsu and Inosuke shoutfests, but many of the demons backstories are tragic AF and sort of grounded
I can enjoy them myself, though they are rarely my favorites and there are a limited few I think are among the best stories. But there are lots of other series aimed at younger audiences I love much more, so ignore demographics and just enjoy what you like. The only thing I'd say is to not limit yourself to one demographic or genre. Don't only watch battle shounen, you probably should watch series aimed at adults, but enjoy the ones for teenagers when you do watch them.
