My Thoughts on Chainsaw Man The Movie Rize Arc
This movie was amazing. I can't understate enough how much of a joy it was to watch from start to finish. I don't often say that about anime these days, even ones that I enjoy, but this one truly deserves statements like that. First of all I've never read the Chainsaw Man manga, but I enjoyed season 1 of the anime quite a bit, but the movie blew it out of the water, amazingly considering it was obviously way shorter. First of all the visuals. It shouldn't shock anyone that the animation was vastly superior to the anime series, I mean it is a movie and has a movie's budget. But that doesn't properly sum it up, it's one of the best animated pieces of anime that I have see in a long time. It might actually be better animated than the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie. At the very least that's the only thing that could possibly compete with it. This is shown the best during the final battle, which I swear lasted like 15-30 minutes. I was in shock as to how good it looked, and I knew it would look amazing because it's an anime movie, not to mention an anime movie released in 2025. I went in knowing the visuals would be stunning, and they still managed to break my jaw with how fast and hard it dropped to the floor and now I need reconstructive surgery, thanks Chainsaw Man!
But there's still the story. This movie introduces the character Rize, as you can probably imagine with the title of the movie, Rize Arc. And ya know what, Chainsaw Man did it to me again. It introduced a female character that I think is somewhat normal, relatively speaking, and might be good for Denji, and then he pulls the rug out from underneath me and shows me that she's just as psychotic as all the rest and also wants to kill Denji. Beautiful. How does he keep getting away with that!? Well I guess that hasn't happened with Himeno. Yet. But this is still the FOURTH time he managed to trick me, first with Makima, (even though Denji still trusts her, for now), second with Power, third with Kobeni, (although i still love her), and now with Rize, except it's way worse and more dramatic here than with the other ones. And for the record I do still like Rize too. That's the other clever thing about the writing, while it isn't fully revealed, I did sense some hints that there's more to her than meets the eye. That she's not as bad as she seems and there's some tragic reason that she did what she did. Or maybe I'm just as much of a delusional gooner as Denji, I don't even know at this point. What I can say is that she was on track to being my favorite female character in the series until the reversal, and I don't know if I'll ever get over this bait and switch. And despite everything she did, I still hate Makima for killing her at the end of the film.
The more of Chainsaw Man I consume, the more Denji grows on me. He's not a great person, but he is a very unique and complex character. He's not hatable, he's just flawed, but for me he is one of those characters that I had to experience more of in order to start to like him. Even then he's not yet one of my favorite protagonists, unless we're solely counting how original he is, which there's a surprising amount of. Also, am I the only one who found the shark fiend incredibly annoying? I've heard people say that about Power, and I get that, but I've always kind of liked her, I think there's a charm to her crazy antics, and she's also pretty funny at times, including during the few moments she's seen in this movie, but the shark fiend was mostly just obnoxious to me, sorry. He also doesn't have the sympathy that Kobeni managed to dig out of me to make him likable and lovable like with her.
