Why does it feel like Fate is the favorite child of Japanese studios?
i swear, no matter what Fate IP it is, it will always gonna have good animation. We are long past Deen Stay Night and the Tsukihime anime in 2003.
We all know the Unlimited Budget Works meme beacuse of Ufotable, but other studios cooks just as good as them.
A1 did both Apocrypha and the currently running Strange Fake, both have different feels, but both have good animation.
Cloverworks with Babylonia, Production IG with Camelot, Last Encore with Shaft, even Prisma Illya with Silver Link has good animation.
I probably missed a few, but man if you are a fan of Fate, you guys are lucky you dont have to worry that much about the animation because of the track record.

Type Moon when they see a bad adaptation they can just go to another studio, DB IP cannot do that, much less now that Toriyama is gone.
Or A Certain Magical Index season 3 (althoguh 1 and 2 where not done fairly either but still a lot better than season 3).
In short, being at the top rung of the ladder doesn't guarantee shit.
It will not bring as much money as FGO tho.
Fate is like two digit billions in USD.
Edit: "My standards are so low I reply instantly and then block them out of fear they will actually respond."
The jump from ToS arc 2 of the ToS ovas from arc 3 was amazing (arc 3 was after the movies) Jusr search for the openings on youtube (tetheala arc & united world arc)
The entire japanesse domestic anime market is worth 10 bil and obv it isnt a perfect comparison cause its lifetime vs yearly but regardless
A single fate anime probably contributes 100s of million in extra revenue for FGO through more players
in short, i agree. their profit margin is insane.
while i generally lean towards "better late and good than early and bad", FGO took/takes that to an extreme, we're waiting literal years between chapters. i'd like something longer and more polished than HYV's 6-week schedules, but 2 years is... the literal opposite end of the spectrum. surely something inbetween can be made to work well lol.
Also, FATE fans are cracked, and they've had years to build up fans, lore, and smut. It's almost guaranteed that if you consume doujinshi, you've seen at least one FGO doujin whether SFW or not. Similarly, any time there's a new outfit or character, you're gonna get art of it practically the same day they're announced.
Part of it is the game, but the other part is the massive culutral zeitgeist that's behind it. If you consume anime, you're inevitably going to encounter FATE, and people are inevitably going to at least get some passing interest, which leads people to seek the easiest ways to interact with it, that being the animes or FGO.
clearly their strat is just conservative. don't do anything controversial, don't invest more dev time than needed, just maintain the game.
the game doesn't have any monetization like battlepass or weekly/monthly pack, so people would only spend money when there's a banner they want to roll, so no surprise when there's nothing new for a while
$8 billion plus, actually.
the creators of the franchise(Kinoko Nasu and Takahashi Takeuchi) come from doujin circles and have never left their mindset from those times in comicket and similar.
We constantly hear from people coming from more corporate like companies being shocked at how casual they are(example Yoshinori ono coming from capcom and joined the FGO development team Lasengle/DW).
I would compare them to Valve and Gabe newell. They are quite similar in how they handle things.
They wrote down a bunch of cool ideas and the main characters. Originally it was only supposed to be a one-shot, a sort of cool introduction to a setting with only a description of the participants (kind of like a DND intro), and then they decided to wrote a full novel on it.
The probability for a 5* servant was also insanely low (compared to other games).
I honestly think the IP carried it, cause the gameplay itself and the story in the beginning were lackluster. Though the story really popped off later on midway through the 1st part.
That or a studio ghibli film.
Any anime is really an advertisment for FGO. And because the money is for marketing, producers can splurge on animation without worrying about return on invesment.
Don't mind me. Just waiting for Lostbelts to be adapted.
It's wild to predict an anime that doesn't even exist being so highly rated but given the circumstances it's honestly a pretty tame bet.
But there are many examples of popular manga having terrible adaptation for example kingdom is Japan Game of thrones even though it's almost none existing worldwide it has huge popularity among Japanese. So you wonder how the hell they were allowed to butcher 1 season so much and censor entire series to the level of shounen gore where the original Manga is freaking seinen
all the recent seinen anime series have had Western backing(Devilman, Cyberpunk)
Like I started watching Sentenced to be a Hero and figured it would be more of the same trash fantasy/isekai type stuff that's all over Crunchy Roll and it had actual animation and adult centered violence. I wasn't sure what year it was for a second.
As for quality, I think it's just because this IP has been around for decades and Production Committees know that these works are worth investing in.
Edit: I love how Strange Fake looks, it's probably now my favourite looking Fate anime. Just beautiful and creative all around.
The problem most have is that they "tried" to merge the 3 routes into one and it was bit of a mess.
They've gotten more common recently though, no? Just last year or so there was Summer Pockets, Atri, 9 -nine- and most recently Gnosia. I'm probably forgetting something too.
But you're right in that even then, they're much less common than manga/light novel adaptations are.
00s Fate was very different place to be.
It assumes this will be your one and only experience of FSN and its routes, by its very nature of combining them.
Tho tbf Ufotable has been on their A-game before the Fate anime.
It was when they first nailed the Ufotable look, the unlimited budget work goes pretty deep
The fate franchise is a multi Billion dollar franchise because it has fate grand order pumping money into the anime’s as a form of advertising and getting more money back through tie in events and new characters in the game.
One punch man doesn’t have that. Not even close.
I know you mean no harm, but this comparison feels like an insult lol
And well. Let's not pretend that it didn't have some hiccups here and there (FSN Deen, the forbidden Tsukihime anime etc.).
The answer is that you're over indexing on Ufotable's generational work with UBW, Zero, and Heaven's Feel. Babylonia was fine, Camelot was fine, Case Files was fine, but all three were nowhere near UBW's level. As for why they get so many anime adaptations, its simply because Fate is a huge and popular IP and not because the industry prefers them particularly. Its the other way around, imo.
Same with Babylonia except it was visually more appealing and also quite consistent. Every episode had some sakuga. The amount of sakuga this show has easily surpasses both Zero and UBW. This was pretty much a sakuga fest show.
For Camelot movies , the first movie was decent nothing special. But the second movie was one of the best sakuga fest movie one will see.
Apocrypha had some good sequences, but it seemed to lack a certain level of polish to it. It could be a stylistic decision, too, however. It reminded me a lot of the Pain vs Naruto scene (and to be clear I love both scenes), but its characteristically rough around the edges. I'd love to learn how it counts among the most ambitious episodes in all of anime btw (purely curious and not being sarcastic here)?
As for Babylonia, I don't recall anything impressing me outside of Quetzalcoatl's meteor kick. Enkidu's Enuma Elish was great, but not in particular thanks to the animation I don't think. Babylonia ranks just around alright to me, overall.
Strange/Fake feels like it has A LOT of potential, though. And it better be with how long it's been cooking in the oven haha
No studio holds any right to the Fate. They were simply approached by production committees.
You think they pull that money out of their ass? Studios love fate because its funded by whales
Also the two Camelot movies were actually made by Signal.MD and Production I.G. (IG was only on the production committe for Camelot 1). Which I was honestly unaware of. Though Solomon got kicked back to Cloverworks.
Really Garden of Sinners began the trend, those movies still look fantastic. I mean I'd argue in terms of art Stay Night looks very good it's just the animation which kind of is mid compared to what comes later.
And Tsukihime... Well it's not good but it has really nice music. Oddly the music in all the adaptations have never been bad, always got some fantastic bangers.
Which I gotta say might also be part of it.
Fate Apocrypha, in terms of type moon anime its probably mid at best in terms of story and writing?
but my god, [the music](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBnE6c6CQQs) by Masaru Yokoyama is [absolutely atmospheric](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-U3Buxaeoc)
1- How TypeMoon approaches and works with the studios, despite being a company TM operates like a doujinshi circle where you have a lot more leeway with deadlines.
2- The characters in general are really good and the stories too, combine that with FGO money and you have a winning recipe.
But the TM sauce goes way before Fate itself, Kara no Kyokai for example, while not being a heavy action series like Fate, still goes hard with the atmosphere and detail put on the animation.
And probably a lot of the production consumes TM media and are fans so they put that extra work. If you want another similar example, just look at Touhou too.
Shame this didn't happen with the Camelot movies. Those were rushed as hell.
Fate is one of Aniplex/Sony's most profitable IPs, so obviously they're going to choose good studios.
Although for my money Deen was...fine...for their adaptations.
You'd be surprised that they are the subsidiaries of Sony Music... Who own FGO.
Strange Fake for example. Ryohgo Narita (Baccano, Durararara, Dead Mount Death Play) initially wrote Fate/Strange Fake as an April's Fool. Only to then get serialized. And if you read the after word of the novel, you will see how much of a Fate nerd he is.
And he's not the only one. One other high profile people is Gege Akutami (Jujutsu Kaisen). And there is a lot more.
Japanese Otaku loves Type-Moon project.
Edit: and from there, you can see how Fate makes a lot of money. It sells bcs people loves it so much.
How many people on this sub do you think actually read VNs, let alone know about them?
it's called sunk cost fallacy
Sif paid for better animation for future lovelive series (OG first season CG is terrible)
Revue starlight gacha paid for the movie (it is amazing)
Uma musume paid for series besides the Uma musume ones (Zombie land saga, Akiba maid war) they even have their own studio now (Bravern, The summer hikaru died).
I guess it is more noticeable for typemoon because most of them are called Fate/something but it is far from being the only studio doing that).
Achha na lage to mujhe gaali de lena par ek baar sunkar dekho
Yaar please
Please
Aisa concept h ke tum logo ke hosh ud jayenge aaj tak aisa concept nahin dekha hoga
I wish my favourite series' received even half the treatment of the Fate universe.
But in general Fate is a money-making giant so I think the studios are usually taken care of financially hence why no matter the studio, every adaptation is always so high quality.
Other series adapted from manga-only works simply haven't made enough on their own yet and the production teams don't spend enough to get the best teams, timelines, and manpower to produce peak.
Can't say.
When Tsukihime remake part 2.
It also helps that it's always had the multiverse element to it, which makes it very conducive for other creators like Narita to "play in the Fate sandbox" and build their own stories using the Holy Grail War framework. It's kind of the same thing that Star Wars has (had?) going for it, though I would say it has had much more mixed results in the process.
