To anyone interested, this is from a 40 minute long OVA and the writer behind it was basically a horror manga legend who inspired authors like Junji Ito.

looks more comical than scary

Yeah, who at the studio thought it was a good idea to use the 'Junji Ito horrified reaction shot' art style on every single damn character for every single damn frame during that entire scene? That's not what it for!
It's meant to be a visual abstraction of what the character feels in the moment. If you have your characters look like that permanently, they don't look horrified, they look like starvation victims who just spent too long in a hot bath and are still all pruned up.

It is somewhat amusing to read your comment knowing that the *horrified reaction shot* actually comes from Umezu Kazuo, not Junji Ito.

That might be a better reaction if the reason why I said 'Junji Ito horrified reaction shot' was that I was implying he originated it... But I was referring to the way he does them.

For the time it was probably scary. Most people are desensitized to horror now

This is under the title of "Umezu Kazuo no Noroi" on MAL. I watched the whole OVA a bit over a year ago. It's mediocre schlock horror and the VA work, animation, and writing quality were weak. Also, I don't remember the second half at all, but I thought this whole thing with the throat-monster was a novel idea.

There's a filter, kind of like when TVs make videos 60fps.
I hate it.
chibibuizel2026-01-13 07:36
Can we get a clip without that 60fps interpolation crap

i watched Junji Ito's horror anime before that but this looks very different. Deep horror.
