I need Magic Anime

Please recommend some anime about magic. But not the kind that shows all sorts of spells in the first season and then becomes a fireball spam anime. Or anime with characters predisposed to water magic. Suggest anime with summoning, elemental, sacred, dark, alchemy, enchantment, illusion, physical magic and featuring magical creatures like dragons, chimeras, and griffins. I don't know if any exist. The anime that appeals to my taste the most in this regard is "I was reincarnated as the 7th prince"
It could be like the Skyrim magic skill tree.

The Ancient Magus' Bride it's probably one of my favourite magic anime.

There's also "Wistoria: Wand and Sword" but it has only one season

Sherlockian_Person2026-01-12 19:52

Thank you for suggestions.

shadebug2026-01-12 20:17

If Ancient Magus’ Bride wasn’t the top suggestion then I was going to burn Reddit down. This question was, presumably accidentally, Quora levels of baiting a specific answer.

Wistoria is good but will be somewhat fireball spammy.

Frieren, The Silent Witch and Mushoku Tensei do fun things with magic on a theoretical level, though perhaps not as much background fantasy as OP would like.

If you want to play with skill trees then I would say So I’m A Spider Now, So What and Tensura are both good for that

Neutron_Starrr2026-01-12 20:22

My flu made me forgot about Mushoku Tensei and Frieren, how could forget? Lol.

Yeah I really liked the Silent Witch but I feel that op won't like it

Neutron_Starrr2026-01-12 20:49

There was also the one who aried on September I think? I forgot the name, it was about a girl witch who was cursed and had like one year to live... It was very good but I completely forgot the name

Edit: it was: "Once I upon a witch's death", check this also, its very good

shadebug2026-01-12 21:32

Ooh, yeah. I watched the first episode and then neglected to watch the rest but it did look like it would be great if you want existential cosiness

DanDoReddit2026-01-12 19:58

Witch hat atelier is airing later this year. I've been reading through the manga and it's an absolute treat!

Falsus2026-01-12 20:00

Wandering Witch Elaina, Frieren, A Certain Magical Index,

Witch Had Atelier, Classroom of a Witch and a Cat next season.

LameSillyHero2026-01-12 20:02

Tsukumichi: Moonlit Fantasy I think would fit the bill

Mr_Salamander___2026-01-12 20:03

Not anime but trust me, read infinite mage.

PeaceAlien2026-01-12 20:14

Secrets of the Silent Witch has some excellent magic moments but it’s more of a slice of life most of the time

UnicornPuppers2026-01-12 20:20

I just started Lord of Mysteries and its epic with magic. It doesn't have all the exposition of how people got powers or their different powers, it just does the thing. Its got all the magic elements you could ask for.

Delicious in Dungeon for something lighter but that's more like one or two people that know spells.

Flying Witch is a cute one too and has a Harry Potter type feel.

I also really liked Mushishi but that's more spiritual "magic". With that said, Dandadan was also a fun watch that deals with spiritual energy but has some charm/magic stuff.

Lastly, I liked Blue Exorcist. Dark moments, some energy magic but good story and interesting lessons on different spirits and spiritual powers.

Secrets of the silent witch

Atharaphelun2026-01-12 20:34

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned ***Magi*** yet. It has a clear magical system that is introduced in the first season and explored deeply in the second season.

brannigansl4w2026-01-12 20:38

No Black Clover mentions?!?!? Yeah each character sticks to their specific specialty but there are so many different characters and applications of magic to go around

Specific-Word-59512026-01-17 02:55

It becomes a fire ball spam shonen, which OP don't want.

brannigansl4w2026-01-17 03:51

Not really. Everyone is constantly using their powers in new ways. Feel like you didn't watch the show if you're saying this

Specific-Word-59512026-01-17 11:55

Watched all the seasons. While the characters powers were constantly evolving, it still stayed in the shonen combat story format of constantly stronger threats and fighting for one's life/friends/loved one/belief.

Compare that to Ancient Magus Bride which many others recommended - learning and use of magic is infused into daily ritual and a way to communicate with the supernatural. While combat is present, it's not the focus of the show, and the protagonists progression in magic is built on not training, level ups, or combat, but understanding the antagonists motive and nature, and "defeating" them with words, unwavelling a folktale and identifying the antagonists real identity, etc.

Khashishi2026-01-12 21:07

Mashle has a good variety of specialist magics, though it gets mostly overshadowed by "thighs magic" or "fist magic"

gsenjou2026-01-12 21:10

The Irregular at Magic Highschool is a great one. The series mixes futuristic tech with magic so the forms of magic used vary greatly.

RobrechtvE2026-01-12 21:10

>But not the kind that shows all sorts of spells in the first season and then becomes a fireball spam anime.

Somewhere in the corner Fairy Tail is crying, going 'Hurtful! Fair... But hurtful.' :P

JustARedditAccoumt2026-01-12 21:43

You should try out various Type-Moon series (Fate, Witch on the Holy Night, Tsukihime, The Garden of Sinners, etcetera).

yxhuvud2026-01-12 22:00

How has noone mentioned little witch academia yet?!? Amazing fun feel-good.

Drizztd992026-01-13 00:35

Frieren

majoralita2026-01-13 08:09

"it didn't have to be magic"

mods_are_morons2026-01-13 03:11

Perhaps "Possibly the Greatest Alchemist of All Time" will do. Mostly crafting magic, but there are some fights with magic.

badmartialarts2026-01-13 03:55

The Misfit of Demon King Academy

No, really, it has a pretty good magic system, despite the main character... (Did you think having rules in a magic system could keep me from doing pretty much anything?)

Cautious-Beyond-92102026-01-13 04:10

Mushko Tensei has great magic in it, the MC uses science to cast spells.

firman_8892026-01-13 08:01

I think you should try TOKYO RAVEN, not just magic it's romance too.

Disastrous_Bit_98922026-01-14 22:33

Kouna the sorcerer can see

Howan29i2026-01-15 06:01

I would recommend Toaru Majutsu no Index, but it's a poor adaptation, cutting out half the explanations of the magic system. I recommend the light novel more; it's like a "system of systems" encompassing various areas that function as standalone systems within the work: grimoires, alchemy, runes, the Tree of Life, Eastern magic, Western magic, tarot cards, occultism, astrology, theology, mythology, the language of angels, Espers, etc.
