Anime shows like Perfect Blue.

Hey guys! I’ve never watched an anime series before but I really want to start. I have watched the movie Perfect Blue and I really enjoyed it so if I could have some recommendations similar to that it would be appreciated. I really enjoy mystery and horror, I enjoy monsters and supernatural but I do also prefer it to be a bit grounded.

Hi Ok-Bug6657, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

Try Monster!
It’s not really supernatural but much more psychological and it’s fairly grounded.

I haven't heard of this one. Gotta try it. Not Horror but I will say Berserk is very dark

Paranoia Agent (series) is from the same director.

Other notable movies from the same director, Satoshi Kon, would be:

* Paprika
* Millenium Actress
* Tokyo Godfathers
* Memories (1995) (a three part anthology movie, and the first part, Magnetic Rose, being directed by Kon)

Magnetic Rose was quite great for a short movie! Definitely my favorite out of the three!

Literally every single anime work with Kon as the director is worth checking out! I love the surreal vibe!

Paranoia agent is Kons only series it’s fantastic

Somebody already mentioned Satoshi Kon's other works.

Also try Steins;Gate. It's a sci-fi time travel show. It's a visual novel adaptation and is the second entry in the Science Adventure series of VNs, although the anime is completely watchable on its own and in fact I recommend it as an entry point into the series.

The first SciADV entry, Chaos;Head Noah, I would say is most similar to Perfect Blue, although the protagonist can be offputting.

Except for Steins;Gate, the SciADV animes aren't very good adaptations and are too condensed and cut too much content.

I haven’t watched Perfect Blue yet, but in terms of recent shows with good suspense/mystery, I really liked The Summer Hikaru Died and Lord of Mysteries. The latter is a bit hard to get into because it’s based on a novel (but paced like a show) and there’s very little hand-holding, but I’d try watching through episode 3.

drunk_SPINOSAURUS2026-01-12 23:38

It has nothing to do with it, but look at Jojo's, just watch it, it's amazing, but it really has nothing to do with what you're saying, I just had to say it.

Grand blue... same vibe

Kiyohara2026-01-13 00:02

In no conceivable world is Grand Blue remotely close to the same vibe as Perfect Blue.

That's like suggesting someone who likes Silence of the Lambs watch Friday Night Lights.
