Sub watchers, what's one show you HAVE to watch in dub? Dub watchers, what's one show you HAVE to watch in sub?
I'll start with one of each:
You absolutely HAVE to watch Ghost Stories in dub, it's a completely different anime in sub, and in my opinion, a much worse one.
Watching Jojo's in dub just removes some of the magic of it, I'm usually a dub watcher but man, Joseph just isn't Joseph in dub.

People just aren’t used to them and have strong nostalgic attachment. Like Yusuke’s voice for example a lot of people hate the jp version despite it making a lot more sense than the eng voice given he is 14 years old lol.
On the other hand, I think there's something special about that nostalgia. A lot of people (my self included) were introduced to anime through dubs. I imagine it's like trying to convince someone who grew up watching pokemon on saturday cartoons to rewatch it in japanese. It's just not the same, and takes effort to try to appreciate.
That's a MUST
For Dub, I'd go with FMA 2003 and Dragon Ball
Black lagoon I’ve heard is good in dub but I watched the sub and loved it- up until the bilingual sections. Bilingual in Beck has the same issues, but at least it’s better than Dub where they completely paint over it.
Dub: Black Lagoon. It's a perfect dub fit.
Watch Steins gate in dub it’s great they did a really great job localizing it for an English audience making sure all the jokes and geeky references would land as intended, making sure you’d laugh
Now the one time I watched a non-comedy in dub was Vinland Saga because it just felt weird for Vikings to be speaking in Japanese lol
Dub: Dr. Stone
and Cowboy Bebop is an obvious one to watch in dub. it’s fantastic.
also, i picked Cyberpunk Edgerunners dub because the English dub felt like it was actually the original.
i also rewatch Your Lie in April during every April and always pick the dub. Kousei and Kaori’s English VAs are both perfect and i love the way they deliver their lines. i also prefer the English dub quotes to the Japanese sub translations.
basically every other show i’ll watch subbed though.
(To address a specific example you gave, I think that they needed more time to cook if they wanted to use accents in the dub, but that's my only real complaint. Well, that and the name changes, I guess, but the same thing happens in the official subs and manga. They stop the accents in part 3 anyway.)
DBZ also feels better in english since the old tv broadcast.
There is Alfred Jodocus Kwak, an old Dutch show produced by tv Tokyo. That needs to be in Dutch
They're also both hilarious.
That said, I really like the soundtrack changes they made for the eng dub of dbz back in the day. The let’s go on a fun adventure bop fits better with OG dragon ball than it did with dbz and the music in the dub felt like it made some scenes way more intense imo. Though, maybe that too is leftover nostalgia as well. 🤣
There are some other good dubs, but those two are my favorites.
I watch sub 99% of the time.
Cowboy Bebop is good either or.
Everything else in sub. Always.
DBZ, One Piece, Cyberpunk, Demon Slayer, Shaman King, DanDaDan, Jojos (this one 100%), Soul Eater & Fire Force (Black Stars German voice fits him so much better tho the dub has that old anime dub quirk where they use -chan etc. too)
I *would* throw AoT in too but its only a really good dub not the better version.
(Also, peak list.)
And personally, i’d rather consume as close to the original as I can… even if I don’t understand the Japanese audio entirely (although obviously you pick up bits just via exposure).
Name another show where the Narrator is the best character lmao
But if it's a local dub, I prefer some of my childhood shows like Doraemon, Ninja Hattori-kun, and Hamtaro to be dubbed. it's more of a nostalgic feeling rather than preference.
Also dungeon meshi is probably one the best dubs I've heard. I put some scenes side by side with the sub and dub versions and there are some scenes where the dub VAs really take the cake with it.
One the flip side, there are some shows that either don't have dubs or have lackluster ones and it makes sense why. The monogatari series for example has a ton of wordplay that doesn't really work in english. Gintama has I think the first season dubbed but it's... well it exists. But it also has a ton of jokes that reference japanese politicians and celebrities so trying to make that work in english also doesn't work. Recently we saw another shounen jump manga, dandadan have a bunch of references thrown in the first episode that are difficult to make work in english, even with a talelnted dub cast.
Otherwise, I pretty much hate dub for just about everything.
Dub: Romeo x Juliet, Cyberpunk Edgerunners (you are doing it wrong if you watch this in anything but Engish), Black Lagoon, Baccano!, Cowboy Bebop and personally yeah I still prefer the dub of Dragon Ball, especially cuts with the Falconer OST for Z (and a fan cut for Kai).
Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Space Dandy, FMA - these are just a small example of shows I will only ever watch dubbed. There are surely more modern examples but these spring to mind first.
As far as sub only, beyond a couple like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure I don't really have any. It's more a matter of seeing it soon after it airs more than necessarily an innate insistence.
