Recommendations for trans anime?
Hi everyone!
I haven't really watched any trans anime, it isn't clear to me what exists out there that's any good.
Something for someone who is tentatively and very scared about coming out as trans would be just perfect. :)
I could of course just search for "trans anime" and see what I find, but I was hoping maybe someone might have a recommendation based on that I just said that that I really like (with no connection to them being about transgender issues):
Welcome to the NHK, WataMote, Kimi no na wa, D4DJ, just to mention a few of my all time favorites!

The cast are all born female with the ability to choose their sex and gender at 17.
There are a couple of manga tho: *Shimanami Tasogare* and *Love me for who I am* both are pretty short so you can try them out too.
You can also check these anime out which have trans characters:
1. Revolutionary Girl Utena *symbolism heavy*
2. My Crossdressing Senpai
3. Astra Lost in Space
4. Blue Period
Skip and Loafer has a trans minor character that has some great interactions with the main girl. Senpai is an Otokonoko's protagonist is a cross-dresser, it's pretty good too although they're not trans, I think it's worth watching.
Edit: forgot to mention that Senpai is an Otokonoko has a big focus on the protagonist's repressed self becauss of their family and past experiences, so even though they're a crossdresser and not trans I think it might scratch your itch a little bit (I hope I'm not offending you in any way, I'm not part of the LGBTQIAP+ community myself so I may be speaking a lot of bullshit here, my sincere apologies if that's the case).
same for Senpai is an Otokonoko which is newer.
One of the best in regards to representation I feel is skip and loafer there's a character who I feel is very realistic.
Wind breaker is a great action anime with a trans character that has a really well done backstory and not just used as a background character
Paradise kiss explores identity in a great way.
And my personal favorite and kinda the forerunner you'll see anyone talk about is ouran.
Our Dreams at Dusk: Shimanami Tasogare
Is really good
Not necessarily about a trans character coming out, it's more focused on the gay kids in the coming out department but there are trans/nonbinary characters
If not then One Piece i guess HEEE HAWWW, though
Ivankov might not really be just trans he's something else.
I don't know, i shouldn't have replied to this, lol.
Nao-chan from Skip and Loafer maybe? That was a great anime.
S2 has a non-binary character (again, not mentioned, but confirmed in producer interview - their gender is Yes lmao)
There is a trans character in Zombieland Saga and Chivalry of a Failed Knight though they aren't the main characters.
Ayakashi Triangle is a genderbender story that does kinda touch upon gender a bit, but I doubt the anime goes into any detail (I haven't watched it, only read it).
- while there aren’t too many anime that feature canonically trans characters, there are many series that have very trans & queer-coded characters, that tend to go through a lot of the same challenges & life experiences that trans & queer people do, and i just so happen to know a few!
- *Oniichan wa Oshimai!* follows a college-age NEET who is turned into a girl by his scientist sister, and quickly becomes a wonderful exploration of girlhood, growing up, and getting a second chance at life. it seems to resonate quite strongly with trans audiences (specially trans women and transfeminine people in general), and is also beautifully animated to boot, but is sadly marred by a disturbingly large amount of fanservice, in a show whose cast consists of mostly middle-and-high schoolers. those aspects genuinely bring the show down a lot, as one scene can be a pretty emotional & sweet bit of development for Mahiro (the mc) and be immediately followed by some questionable content, to put it lightly. even more confusingly, these elements aren’t present *at all* in the manga and seem to have been added in by the animation staff, so if you wanna experience the story but very justifiably don’t wanna sit through the weird shit previously mentioned, i’d go with the manga.
- *Senpai wa Otokonoko* is more an exploration of gender identity specifically, with a lead that is assigned male at birth but presents as a woman at school as they feel more comfortable that way (i only use *they* bc i see the mc as non-binary, but other interpretations are totally valid!). over the series, the main character meets new people who all go through their own share of queer inner and outer conflicts, and learns more about themselves, culminating in what in my opinion is a pretty beautiful ending 🥰 and thankfully there’s no offputting fanservice in it at all, but a trigger warning for some harsh conflicts with parental figures wouldn’t go amiss.
- i can’t comment on it too much as I haven’t watched the show at all, but *Zombie Land Saga* from what I hear does straight up have a canonically transfem character, so that could be one to watch as well? i genuinely know next to nothing about the show besides that little tidbit lol
- and beyond those three, you’ll have a much easier time finding trans and queer characters in manga compared to anime, as most of what actually gets adapted is inarguably “safer” material, that includes way less walks of life within its casts, but that’s a kind of conservative society for you 😭 i can definitely recommend the previously mentioned *Onii-chan wa Oshimai!* manga, along with (in no particular order)
- *Love Me For Who I Am* (enby rep)
- *Last Gender: When We Are Nameless* (all kinda queer rep)
- *Sayonara Chinchin Welcome Manman* (transfem rep)
- *Umareru Seibetsu wo Machigaeta!* (transfem rep)
- *Kase-san Series* (lesbian rep)
- *Koisuru (Otome) no Tsukurikata* (gay rep)
- *That Time I Was Blackmailed by the Class’s Green Tea Bitch* (lesbian rep)
- *Hanayome wa Motodanshi* (transfem rep)
(2) Gnosia (currently airing). Half the cast is LGBTQ+. There are enbys, gays, gender bent characters and a man to cat trans. It's pretty wacky.
(3) Level E. Sci-fi story with a trans man as a protagonist
(4) Hunter x Hunter. Same author as #3, he has [a history ](https://youtu.be/9w6fvtgxpGs?si=FId1CCwkZaF_gfSm) of writing gender non conforming characters. There's a crossdressing man, a trans woman and an enby
Another is Princess Jellyfish
The closest to diving into the subject of trans in anime form are gender benders but they succeed in that subject in varying degrees; some bad and some good.
Others that somewhat goes with the topic
Senpai is an Otokonoko
Onii-chan is Done For/Onimai
Kashimashi Girl meets Girl
There are however more trans related mangas not adapted into anime if you're interested in reading manga;
Love Me for Who I Am (Fukakai na Boku no Subete wo)
The Bride Was a Boy (Hanayome wa Motodanshi)
My Journey to Her (Boku ga Watashi ni Naru Tame ni)
I was Born the Wrong Sex (Umareru Seibutsu wo Machigaeta)
I Wanna be Your Girl (Kanojo ni Naritai Kimi to Boku)
Madoka's Himitsu (Madoka's Secret)
